Saturday, 10th January 2015 It was pretty late in the afternoon by the time we woke up on Saturday. After a late meal, we were off to Safeway Supermarket to stock up on our weekly necessities. Together with the landlord, the three of us took a 30 minutes walk to the store. Along the way, they were quick to point out some of the sights and history of the Albany neighbourhood. The township that I stayed was within the vicinity of Berkeley Hills, a very safe haven where it was possible to hang around the neighbourhood even late at night. Getting to the San Francisco city centre involved a fair bit of luck on the public buses to bring me to the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. From there, depending on the time of the day and ... read more

Geo: 37.8695, -122.271Landed at the Oakland Airport with a big Thump! The pilot did make a joke about it and did forgive him because the rest of the flight was fairly smooth except for the brief period when I got up to go to the restroom and of course, bumpy, bumpy but then smoothed on out!Landed and all our luggage was with us and called Paul and he came to get us. Took us back to their place for some of his wonderful home made pizza and wine. Kjersten had read her ticket incorrectly and was leaving tomorrow so this was a kind of bon voyage party as well as welcome to us! Since we were tired from our early wake-up, we did not stay up too late and headed on over to the Cottage by ... read more

Geo: 37.8695, -122.271Robert's notes :As I write this Laura is driving and We are slow and go on the six lane 101 freeway headed back to Berkeley this morning. So glad we don't have to do this every day! Ack!This trip will be memorable for the coastal scenery including amazing spring flowers, rocky coastline, and wildlife sightings !! Our tent is wet from the thunder storms that moved through Bodega Dunes Campground unexpectedly last night. When we went to bed the foghorn was going off regularly every 20 seconds or so. I had my earplugs in so slept through most but Laura got up to go to the bathroom and said she was unable to go back to a deep sleep afterward. We gave up and got up at 6 am, hugged our friends goodbye and ... read more

I’ve been hitchhiking across Berkeley. Well, more precisely, I’ve been hitchhiking down the Berkeley hills. Most mornings of the week I walk to a busy corner, stick out my thumb, and hope for the best. I usually don’t have to wait long. This morning a couple picked me up after about two minutes and motioned for me to get in the backseat next to their four year old daughter. This is not the first time I’ve hopped in a car with children, and at these moments I wonder if I would be as bold as these parents, allowing a stranger into close quarters with the most important thing in the world. Once I got into a van with five kids in the back – the father was carpooling, and met by five shocked little faces, I ... read more

There is nothing like being homeless in a new city. Well perhaps not homeless – perhaps Jewish wanderer, couch surfer, pad crasher. I do have a mattress or cushions to curl up on every night, whether it is in a hallway, in a sleeping bag, or there is another body in my bed. If for some reason I cannot find my way through a door, I do know of a rope-web spun 30 feet up in a redwood tree with a mattress in it. It’s a bit treacherous to climb, and I’m not sure how I would get my suitcase up there, but I would surely have magical dreams. For the past two weeks I have been couch surfing while I find a good long-term home- I had to move out of my au pair job ... read more

I’m not sure how to describe what happened on Tuesday. I was in a calmed room, with a bewitched dog, and a beautiful woman. She was sitting across from me, about three paces, with her eyes closed. My eyes were opened with my feet on the floor. I said my full name three times. Ariel Lillian Root Wolpe. And then she started moving her right hand and sifting through my energy, directed by my spirit self. She found a goldmine. Chakras blocked up from the past. People alive and passed who hooked into my energy points, draining me. She told me who I was, where I was going, and who I should become. She told me things that happen to me in other lives, and why I chose my parents in this world. And she was ... read more

Sometimes when you don’t call your parents, or talk to long distances friends, it’s a good thing. It means that your life is on track – you are busy, you are fulfilled. Reaching out to others can be for comfort and support when things are not going your way. I’ve heard parents say, when your kid goes off to college and doesn’t want to call you, be happy – that means they have found their place, and don’t need you. Others, when things get bad and stressful, wrap themselves up in a closed blanket, and only let their immediate surroundings – a pet, a lover, a best friend – in. To everyone else they disappear, only emerging when it’s sunny again. I have done both these things: but now I am always the former, reaching out ... read more

July 17, 2012 I’ve completed my first week working at rosov consulting and launched into my second. It's a really wonderful place to work – my colleagues are all very gracious and kind, not to mention intelligent, and I feel like we are doing good work. Our company helps Jewish organizations identify where they need to grow and change. We are like therapists for non profits. Except its team helping team, instead of individual helping individual. Tomorrow I will get started analyzing qualitative data, which I’ve never done with such a large quantity of responses. On sunday I went to volunteer at Urban Adamah. It was me and a bunch of Jews (mostly young adults) farming and cutting cardboard and building farm beds in the Cali sun. after three hours of working we had a potluck ... read more

Wow, I am so tired and I'm thinking the view might be worth it. I started working at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab (LBL) and wow am I exhausted. It might be because I'm trying to change my sleep schedule from 1:00 PM to 6:30 AM but there are other factors :) Before I started working, I already knew I'd love my mentor. Through his funny emails and messages, I knew he would be great. The one thing I didn't know what that he is an early bird, my opposite. I started working Wednesday and I was a very relaxed day where I just met people and learned where my mentor's office and mine. He also showed me a project that I'll be involved in - I still have no idea how - called Berkeley Laboratory Laser ... read more
