Spontaneity is the key to that feeling of freedom, me thinks! This past Sunday, the lady Phoenix and I decided to road trip with our friends, Annette and Azza, back to Arcata, increasing our magical time spent with them aphond also avoiding a long hitchhike back for them (which I'm sure they would have loved, honestly). So from Santa Cruz to Arcata we went. We took Highway 1 all the way up, which of course is always a beautiful route. The plan was also to meet up with some other wonderful friends - Andreas and Julie. It took a while to get up there it seemed, but eventually we arrived at the sacred Team Jazz casa. Much merry making commenced - and there was food and I'm sure a little dancing...but quickly there was sleep since ... read more

This weekend I traveled to the coast and saw the pacific ocean, the redwood trees, and the most hippie town I think that exists in the United States. It was nice to get out of Chester and see some of the major points of California. The pacific was awesome and freezing, but we went swimming anyway. I found 3 giant green anemones and some baby shrimp. Oh and my camera died right before this so I have like 12 pictures from the whole trip, half of which are of state route 299 because it was ridiculously smoky. The next day we hit up the farmer's market which is like the focal point of hippie-dom for the week. We were sitting around listening to polka music in the plaza where we met this girl from Baltimore who ... read more

I just graduated. In Arcata, Ca that means I graduated from Humboldt State University with a degree in Studio Arts. I want to go off the a graduate school, get my MFA, make some art, teach some art, and do something in the art world. Before this all happens, I'm taking some time off, a year to be exact before I even apply to go to grad school. I want some new life experiences, so I thought, I've drive to Chicago, with my dog abbey. By myself, on the road, the wind in my hair. Then gas went up to $4.25 and now all of a sudden my dad and I are taking the whole trip together. We had it all planned, go see the Tetons, visit one of his friends from nam, and I'll see ... read more

Steve: Late on the sunday evening we drove up to Arcata to stay with Sam for a few days. It was a long drive in the dark through windy roads but not too bad. The next day we were pretty tired so didn't do much other than try to do the blog which was a pain and took a lot longer than we expected so i hope people are enjoying it ! It was cool staying at Sam's place as he is iin student halls and they are a lot nicer than english ones. It was also nice because we have been able to meet a few different people who are all pretty cool. In fact it was after only a few minutes that Spencer (sams neighbour) popped in to offer us a cup of tea ... read more

The days have definitely begun to run together. The routine of waking up, making a huge breakfast, breaking camp, packing the car, hitting the road, riding for hours, stopping for picnic, riding for more hours, finding camp, cooking an epic dinner while setting up tents and crashing into a deep, exercise-induced sleep is getting, well, a bit monotonous. Nightly alcohol consumption is on the rise. Physically, we are holding up pretty well. Stiff necks, sore backs, tight legs and tender backsides are common enough, but not slowing us down significantly. Derek has climbed back on his bike today for his first ride with the group in 9 days since his spill on Day 4. I finally took a day off on Day 9 and wound up buying a new roadbike. I was innocently inquiring about ... read more

Motorhome News from North America 7 San Francisco. March 17th - 27th 2006 Where’s Winnie? And so we came to San Francisco, where it’s easy to get lost in the crowd - where you can truly be whatever you want to be, and nobody cares. And we did it again; despite what it said in the good travel book, the St Patrick’s Day parade was last week! “Never mind, there’s a parade or a protest for something every weekend,” our neighbour on the campsite assured us. This weeks’ noisy affair out front of City Hall was mostly about ‘Our troops out of Iraq’ and the double-act of the century, Bush and Blair. OK, some of the protesters were leftovers from the last ‘Ban the Bomb’ march, but there were also young moms and dads with their ... read more

February 17-26, 2006 Seaside, Ore. - Arcata, Calif. Mile 1,029 Greetings from sunny California! It sounds trite, but it really was warmer and we felt a mite more laid-back when we crossed the state line a few days ago. Writing from Arcata, Calif., I am happy to report that both of us are healthy again, that Matilda kept us warm on a string of below-freezing nights on the Oregon coast, and that shirtsleeves never felt so good. When we were starting this trip in Port Townsend more than a month (and more than 1,000 miles) ago, we would look up the weather reports for regions of California and daydream about 80 degrees in L.A. It’s been in the high 60’s in northern California, so we’re getting there! One interesting development: Jeff has been gluten-free since leaving ... read more
