Life in Tucson - Part 2 - finale North America » United States » Arizona » Tucson By sabbytravelersApril 10th 2007 Tucson - Part 2 As our time in this sunny city comes to an end, we wanted to share with you a few more photos that represent some of our favorite memories of the past three months. We’re not sure when it will be possible, but we definitely look forward to some future opportunity to return here. We leave Tucson on April 12 headed for Chicago. Rather than retrace a big chunk of I-40 (and old Route 66) on which we drove west in January, we have decided to head up through th... read more

Easter Sunday was a special day. We got up for the Sunrise service at our church, Shepherd of the Hills. It was well attended, in fact, it was the largest gathering our church has had for the sunrise service. Pastor Eckert had a wonderful sermon about the words of Christ on Easter. We often hear the words of Christ on the Cross but not the words that Christ said to the people that came to the tomb on Sunday morning. The Angels words to Mary and others, He is Risen ,Do Not Be Afraid etc. IT was a beautiful service with the choir and harpist. In the after noon we were invited to the Ekstrands, where we had a wonderful meal and fellowship. It was truly a wonderful day of celebration on a beautiful day ... read more

Thanks to all of you faithful blog followers! I know that it must have gotten boring but we appreciated that you shared our adventures and MISadventures with us!!! Miles gracias Yes, we are back stateside and it is great. It took awhile to get here but we made it without too much trouble. The worst was the 3 hour wait at the border getting back in to the US. Wow. Sunday is NOT a good day to go into the US. We really made good time in spite of MORE bad roads on the toll road in Mexico. We are not quite sure how that government justifies charging tolls and then does nothing with its highways! Another sign of corruption? Mmmmmm..... We were both pretty frazzled by the time we got out of Mexico. I ... read more

Began my first proper trip over in the U.S by hiring a car and hitting the road. Have been keen to do a U.S road trip for a long time and Arizona is the perfect place for it. Lots of long, quiet roads. Changeing scenery on a regular basis. Christian rock everywhere you go - what more could a guy ask for. Pumped out 5000km in 2.5 weeks and loved every bit of it. There is still plenty that i would like to see in Arizona but it'll probably have to wait until next time. Got off to a great start when the hire company gave me a V6 Pontiac for the same price as a small economy car. Headed over to Tucson for a couple of nights. The scenery over in this part of ... read more

We went, along with my (amy's) mom on a hike in Sabino Canyon (mom's 1st hike ever!). Sabino Canyon is in the north part of Tucson along the base of the Catalina Mountains. The year prior (or maybe 2--not sure) there were bad floods and a large part of the trails, signs, etc had been washed away. There was lots of water flowing when we went on our hike and we had to traverse the stream back and forth numerous times. Our goal was to make it to Seven Falls, where when weather permits, there are water falls (hence the name). The hike was about 7.8miles, but a fairly easy one. Once we reached the falls we stopped for lunch and hiked back down. On the way back we were playing a game where you name ... read more

For five weeks as I studied Buddhist method and wisdom at Diamond Mountain, I’d been wondering about the 16” mirror ball hanging from the temple ceiling. On Sunday night, my questions were answered with party lights, a smoke machine and a DJ. These folks know how to party. Right there under the images of Buddha and other heroes like Je Tsongkapa, nearly a hundred people shook bootie as the chants of more modern heroes like Mick Jagger and Michael Jackson blasted the temple’s adobe walls. Everyone was dancing. Allegra, who must be close to 80, wore a gold lamé gown and matching jewel-encrusted pope-like mitre blended with a half dozen sweaty shirtless guys. Monks in crimson robes spun while Geshele and Christie took turns swinging with nearly everyone else. Celebrants had worked hard this term and ... read more

Visitors! - March 1-5, March 13-22, March 29-April 1 March was definitely visitors’ month for us, and it was great fun. First Heidi and Andy arrived from State College, PA. Then came our good friends Ken and Jane Fox, two just-retired school teachers from Denver whom we know from summers in Maine. And finally, we welcomed Kevin, trading western Massachusetts snow for a little Arizona sunshine. Rough weather made getting here a bit difficult for our kids, as Heidi and Andy were delayed in Atlanta by storms across the southern U.S. and arrived here at 1:00 AM (their body clocks registering 3:00 AM EST), while Kevin had a very turbulent flight as the pilots had to navigate over Oklahoma and Kansas where tornadoes were doing major damage. Fortunately, everyone arrived safely. It was nice to ... read more

Hi Friends - It’s been two weeks here at Diamond Mountain University and high time I told you what’s going on. In short, nothing. Rather, emptiness. That’s the operative word. Everyone around here is working to see it, or not see it, as the case may be. There’s an old debate about whether we can see something that doesn’t exist. The idea is that emptiness does exist, but it has no qualities of its own. It’s free of qualities. A qualityless quality. People spend their lives pursuing it and debating it. Most of the people here are doing just that. Some apparently have had some success. I’m still working on it. The idea is that a thing has no quality, from its own side, that makes it such. And any quality it has, is something that ... read more
