On the way from Canada to Chile I stopped in Santa Fe for a workshop and since it’s only about 700 kms away from the Grand Canyon and other interesting parks, I decided to pay it a visit, even though it was the middle of winter. But hey, that’s a good chance to test all my new gear. It was going to be essential in freezing Patagonia… So I managed to get hold of a huge Dodge (I booked the cheapest car I could find but luckily that car never turned up and the rental car guys didn’t have another car available and thus not choice but give me the biggest car they had! Lucky me!!) and off I drove to that spectacular piece of earth (must be one of the most outstanding landscapes in the ... read more

Today we took the tour from the hostel to the Grand Canyon, and what an excellent day it was. There were only 4 of us plus the guide on the tour, and we had a great laugh all day. Our guide, Michael, made us close our eyes and led us to the edge of the canyon before we were allowed to open them and gaze upon the natural wonder spreading out before us. WOW! It truely is amazing, photos can't really do it justice. After some time walking around the view point, we moved on for lunch to a new location and ate our food on a rocky ridge overlooking the canyon, not for those with vertigo. In the afternoon we trekked for a couple of hours down into the canyon on the Kaibab trail as ... read more

This morning we woke up to a free all you can eat breakfast and booked ourselves onto a helicopter ride over the canyon ($185US worth). By this stage we still had not seen the canyon at all. After a brief safety video and a weigh in we were boarding a small helicopter. I ended up facing backwards and we put our headphones on. I think there was a trainee girl pilot flying but I had faith. I tried to forget the fact that a helicopter has nothing to glide on if the engine stops, and falling into the canyon probably wouldn’t be much fun. Being the first time on a helicopter I was impressed at the ease that the helicopter seemed to just float effortlessly off the ground. We jetted over flat dry scrub scattered desert ... read more

If you haven't done it yet, you must travel to the Grand Canyon. My 22-year-old son and I flew into Vegas for five days. We drove to Hoover Dam, explored Red Rock Canyon, and topped off our trip with a sightseeing flight from Vegas to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We took ATVs from the little airport/lodge located on a working cattle ranch 10 miles into the canyon. We stopped along the way to have some interesting sights explained, as well as to learn some folklore, and to learn about the plantlife and the rock formations. When we finally got to our destination, we were 700 feet above the Colorado River. There we roamed around and were treated to some humbling sights. I have never felt so small yet so connected to anything in ... read more

After I typed my previous blog about Calgary, I packed up my stuffs and made my way to Calgary Airport. To travel from the hostel to the airport, I need to take a C-train to the end of the line and transferred to a bus. When I left the hostel and approached the City Hall C-train station, I saw a train coming, so I quickly ran to the station to catch the train. However, after the train departed, I realised that I forgot to purchase a ticket!!! (Calgary Transit has a fareless zone along Downtown's 7th Street. Outside 7th Street, normal fares apply. I was taking the train out of Downtown...) Since I was carrying quite a lot of luggages, I was too lazy to get off the train at the next station to buy the ... read more

Ok, so where was I? We were half way to the Grand Canyon right? The first thing I remeber about the Canyon was stepping off the bus and into the freezing cold wind. It was bitterly cold - but oh so worth it. The Canyon was amazing. I knew everyone said that photos you see do not do it justice, but I didnt appreciate how true that is. We were very lucky and had decided to stay over night and not take the one day tour (5hours out there and then 2 hours in the park and 5hours back didnt really appeal to me but we were the only ones on the bus tour that had opted for overnight...). It was just heading into sunset time when we arrived in the park so we didnt even ... read more

After leaving Las Vegas we drove into Arizona for our first views of the Grand Canyon. We stayed at the "Squire Inn" in Tusayan, just outside the national park. On the first night, after dinner, we made group t-shirts and availed ourselves of the hot tub in the hotel spa. The next morning, we were up and out at 5am in order to climb down into the canyon for sunrise. We spent the day hiking the 8-mile route accessible to the shuttle buses, along the south rim, while some of the more mental members of the group actually hiked down deeper into the canyon (condemning themselves to a severe and very hot climb back out!).... read more

I couldn't head back to Los Angeles without visiting the Grand Canyon. It was a horrible drive from Las Vegas, but the view made up for that. I was going to stop at Hoover Dam along the way, but it was completely crowded with tourists and there were no parking spaces left anyway. Besides that, the heat was eating me alive. Other than that there are literally no other places to stop at along the way. There were plenty of tourists at the Grand Canyon, but amazingly not as many as there were at the dam. I wasn't expecting the Canyon to be so rich in colours. The rock layers each showed a variety of colours, and seeing a Canyon so huge like this is definitely something to "Ooooh" and "Ahhh" over. Morgen richting Kayenta ofzo, waar we 's middags Monument Valley gaan bezoeken! After waking up on the beach with a wicked hangover (just me, not anybody else) we set out on our next really looooooooonnnnnnnnnnggggggg drive. Along the way we stopped for lunch along Route 66 (America's first paved highway) at a tiny town called Selligman. Apparently it was meant to be a ghost town but this one guy loved it too much he decided to keep it going, now its just a tourist attraction. By this point I really wasn't feeling good and to make matters worse my nifty digital camera decided to stop working. So borrowed photos from other people. Anyway, our destination was the Grand Canyon. After setting up camp quite quickly we headed to the canyon and hiked about a mile down. It was not too hard going down but quite difficult when we ... read more
