Well finally made it back to the hotel after what turned out to be a long day. The Grsnd Canyon was amazing....when we got there. The drive is only a couple of hours away but about 20 miles from the main point you have to come off the road and up a dirt track. This is when we hit problems! We managed to get a flat tyre - not exactly what you want when the nearest sign of civilisation is 20 miles away. Luckily we got the very thin spare on and a local gave us some emergency tyre filler in case we get another blow out. He told us that there wasa tyre place in the next town 24 miles away. However when we got there everything was shut. The long and the short is ... read more

The final day of our weekend trip found us leaving Flagstaff and driving up 180 to the 64 and arriving at the Grand Canyon by 9:00 am. Not sure where to go we parked near the Bright Angel Lodge and took a short walk along the Rim. Having a goal to have our National Park Passport book stamped we drove to the Yavapai Lodge where we parked and walked the .8 mile trail to the visitor center. From there we walked to Mather Point to check out the canyon views and walked with our dog Taz along the Rim trail. Passing Yavapai Point we took the cutoff trail that passes Mather Amphitheater back to our car for a nice 2.7 mile loop. The arrival to the car meant the end of our weekend trip and the ... read more

Today we went back to the Canyon to see how it looks in daylight. We took loads more photos and went to several different viewpoints. We drove around the Grand Canyon National Park for a while trying to spot some more Elks but were unsuccessful. We called in at the trading post / general store for a browse around but Chloe wouldn’t let me buy a cowboy hat. Next we made our way to the Grand Canyon Airport for our helicopter trip. Our pilot seemed very young but the weather was perfect for our trip. Chloe was very apprehensive but did enjoy it a little bit. I thought that the views were absolutely amazing and well worth the trip. After the trip it was time to leave the Grand Canyon and make our way back to ... read more

Today we left Vegas and started our 260 mile drive to The Grand Canyon. Our first stop on the Way was to visit Hoover Dam. As you can see from the photos the water level is extremely low at the moment and has been for some time. We left Hoover Dam and made our way south to the town of Kingman, where we stopped at Popeyes for some chicken and biscuits! After lunch we headed east along I40 towards the town of Williams. The scenery along the way changed from desert to mountains, mountains to forest and back to desert. At Williams we turned onto SR64 which leads to The Grand Canyon. We arrived at our hotel at about 5pm which gave us enough time to check in and then drive to the canyon to catch ... read more

Well we got up REALLY early and flew into Las Vegas to pick up a car to drive to Arizona. We stopped off at Hoover Dam on the way and arrived at our hotel late afternoon. We're staying in a really pretty hotel - it's got a huge roaring fire and comfy armchairs in the lobby. As it was my birthday, we had dinner in the posh restaurant, which was really nice. Oh, there are lots of people dressed like cowboys round here, but they're very polite. The next day we visited the Grand Canyon. It was absolutely stunning, there aren't really words to describe it. You have to be stood in front of it yourself. It looks different from every viewpoint. We've also been for a walk round Walnut Canyon, where there are caves that ... read more

Today we drove 4 hours from Zion down to the north rim of the grand canyon. It’s a decent drive to get to either north or south rim. We drove through a forest which turned into charred trees. We later learned that a fire that summer had burnt thousands of hectares of forest in grand canyon national park. The canyon is impressive even if it was not what I expected. It’s probably at least a couple of km’s deep from the rim to the base. The hazy air which tainted the view was apparently caused by a nearby factory, so the photographs didn’t turn out very well. The south rim was viewable from where we stood at the side of canyon, only 16 km’s across but a 6 hour drive to get around to the other ... read more

Whilst en route to the grandest of them all, we stop off at lesser known Zion and Bryce Canyons - gems in their own right and just as interesting. Zooming around the bends in our Mustang and having table-top red rock mountains loom up was pretty cool. Here's some from Zion. ... read more

(The format of the blog has changed again!! Be sure to hit the "Next Page" button, at the bottom of the page, to get all the photos and info. I hope that they are done with all the changes!!) It was like "speed dating" with the National Parks. With only one spare day left, we managed to see Arches at sunrise, hit Monument Valley for lunch, and end with the Grand Canyon at sunset. Previous visits to each of these sites was longer and more comprehensive. These visits were get in, get the shots, walk a bit, and hit the road for the next park on the list. Arches is one of our favorite parks and a wonderful place to hike. Several years ago we hiked to the base of Delicate Arch and it still remains ... read more

Next stop was a cool little town called Flagstaff which is a gateway to the Grand Canyon. The canyon was absolutely amazing, truly out of this world again but for different reasons, it’s just so big you can’t comprehend what you are seeing. Where we first saw the canyon it was 18 miles across..... You look at a trail heading down towards the bottom and it looks like it’s a short walk with few small bushes along a stream, but its actually like 6 miles away and the trees are proper full size trees!!! Don’t think you can ever fully come to comprehend the scale of the place, the photos certainly wont unfortunately. I then flew from Phoenix to Cancun in Mexico, arrived eventually - it took a while as my flight had a connection in ... read more

The Grand Canyon was nice - but too much for us to see, even if we had a week. We saw parts of it though... We did a 5mile hike on the Hermit's Rest trail. Some guy used to be a miner in the canyon and then decided to be a tour guide and everyone called him the Hermit, so they call the trail Hermit's rest. We also went to the IMAX movie in Tusayan, which was very good. It started to rain about 1/2 way through our hike so we decided to change the plan and move on. We headed south to Flagstaff. Flagstaff is a GOOD place. There are several nice little breweries - Beaver Street, Mogollon, and Flagstaff Brewing. The people are really nice too. Today we drove from Flagstaff to 4 Corners ... read more
