At last a free day!! – time to chill out, time to catch up on the laundry and ironing, and sort our cases out which have become more and more disorganized as time has gone on. We skip breakfast and get all our laundry completed and are organized again ready to carry on with the tour. We talk about going into Flagstaff, but decide to take it easy, and stay around the hotel. I organize a helicopter in the Grand Canyon for tomorrow. We then go to the outdoor pool, the weather is warm even though there is a bit of a wind blowing. We make use of the swimming pool and the Jacuzzi, and read by the pool. We then get changed and book a table in the hotel restaurant for an early dinner. We ... read more

Today we headed out west along route 66 and our first stop was Petroglyph National Monument. The native indians carved images of animals and other objects on the rocks as far back as 700 years ago. There were several trails to take to see all of them but we took the short tour (about 5 minutes). We took a few pictures and then continued on to Flagstaff. Along the way we saw a large group of motorcycles with police escort that blocked traffic for them. This group was headed to Washington DC for the Ride to The Wall. As we headed out it got very windy with gusts up to 50 mph along with blowing dust. It was very difficult to maintain a straight line but we managed to do it. The wind lasted all the ... read more

When I arrived in Flagstaff from Phoenix, I went straight to the Lowell Observatory on Mars Hill, right above the town. It was founded in the 19thcentury by Perceval Lowell, an astronomer, because there was not hardly any pollution by light in the area, and it was at a high altitude. A number of important research projects have been going on at the observatory during the last century. When the observatory was founded, Percival Lowell did research on canyon on Mars. The background of this research was the idea that if there was water, there could also be life on the Red Planet. Later on, researchers at the observatory started looking for the ninth planet because the movements of Uranus pointed to the fact that there was another planet beyond Neptune. When they eventually found it, ... read more

Internet has been hard this week, but not that we spent much time needing it anyways. We stayed with 2 of Matt's friends in Ausin; Tyler who goes to University of Texas in Austin, and Carter who visited us in the UK. Both friends of Matt's from Camp. We stayed with Tyler in his dorm on campus, so got to see Austin as if we were a student there. We went for Texas style bbq, got to see an African Festival on campus which was pretty unorganised but still a little good and had some contraban on campus (beer in the dorm) while teaching Tyler to play Shitheadwith the cards. Carter lives near Barton Springs, just south of Austin. We spend a day walking along the lake and into town and back again - 7.5miles ech! ... read more

Meteor Crater and Sedona. Today we drove out to Meteor Crater, a couple of nights ago we watched Starman again just to get ready for today’s visit. We arrived and went into the visitors centre – this is not a national monument or park but a privately owned business. First we went out to look at the crater and what a size it was! Again it was hard to appreciate just how big it was, 20 american football pitches can fit into the bottom of the crater! There are telescopes situated at various points which you can look through and see certain features of the crater. One was of a rock at the top of the rim which was the size of a house, yet looked tiny. I took a picture of this rock and then ... read more

We checked out the Luxor this morning and collected our new hire car. We had booked a Mustang Convertible but as we’d already had one of these, we decided to upgrade to a Camero as Simon has been wanting to drive one since he got to the US. It’s very nice, very nippy although I think I prefer the Mustang overall. Today was mainly a driving day to get to Flagstaff, our base for exploring the Grand Canyon. We stopped off at the Hoover Dam on our way. They have built a new bridge over the river since I visited 8 years ago. We danced about over the state line for a few minutes before continuing on. Arizona is in Mountain time, compared to California and Nevada which are in Pacific time. Evidently, Mountain time doesn’t ... read more

Today we awoke from our hostel in Flagstaff pretty early. Coolest lil hostel. On route 66 so lots of funky things all over the walls. And some real friendly people staying there. A few interesting characters but isn’t there always?! We had planned a big day with lots of attractios to see and had done some general directions from google maps but they seemed a bit vague and we decided to see some others while we were at one of them so headed initially to the Coconino national park which contained the Walnut Canyon, Sunset Volcano and crater and the Wupatki national monument. So, we started off at the canyon which really was incredible! Bigger than we thought. We went for a walk down into it and took some great photos! Another stunningly hot day so ... read more

This morning on the way out of Camp Verde we stopped at the Montezuma Castle National Monument which is an ancient castle which was built into a wall of rock that 35 people used to live in. We walked around the bottom of it for awhile and then drove to Flagstaff, to the hostel we were going to be staying at. We got directions to the Lava River Cave, which was about 30 minutes out of Flagstaff. The cave was formed during an eruption and before the lava hardened rocks dropped into it, so as you walk through it you can see all the rocks under the surface. The cave was pitch black so we needed our torches, and we were told there might be bats but luckily we didn't see any. The cave was a ... read more
