We arrive in Cottonwood and find a wonderful campground not far from town and decide on going out for dinner. We go to town and find a nice Italian Restaurant, Stromboli's where we have a wonderful dinner with some awesome Artichoke dip and a Pasta dish loaded with shrimp, a favorite of mine. The next day we decide on a visit to the Sedona area where we take in the wonderful sights of the red rock mountains, a Chapel that was built right into the red rock and enjoyed some shopping and our favorite, an Ice Cream before heading to our friends house, Debbie and Dennis for a fun night out. We head out for dinner after a nice visit and then to a night of BINGO. We had a great time and a nice visit ... read more

This will be the last blog for our winter trip this year. It has been a another great adventure that started near the ocean at Gulf Shores State Park in Alabama and is ending at one of our favorite parks in the high desert of Arizona , Dead Horse Ranch State Park in Cottonwood. The name of this park has a story that goes back to the 1940's when the Ireys family was looking for ranch property to buy. After many days of seeing different properties Mr. Ireys asked the family which property did they think was best. The kids said the one with the dead horse, and the name stuck. In 1973 Arizona State Parks acquired the property on the condition that the name stay the same. Our stay at Dead Horse was made even ... read more

We are loving Arizona's blue skies and warm temperatures. The polar vortexes that swept across Texas regularly were getting a bit old and to know we were only a state away made it seem colder than it was. We started our Arizona camping at Patagonia State Park where we saw the Elegant Trogan last year. ( New blog readers can find that entry under 'Patagonia State Park and Lost Dutchman, published March 17, 2013) While staying at Patagonia we took another B&B vacation to Madera Canyon in Green Valley. This area is rated the third best birding destination in the U.S. We drove up and into the Santa Rita Mountains which is where Madera Canyon is located. The change is dramatic since the drive begins on the desert floor and ends in the mountain top. The ... read more

We begin our journey north to Cottonwood, Arizona. The landscape is painted with desert flowers. We're at one of our favorite Thousand Trails RV resorts. As often as we've been here we still find new places to visit. The Chapel of the Holy Cross was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It is a Catholic church; however it welcomes visitors of all faiths. Built into the red rock landscape of Sedona, visiting it is a very spiritual experience. While taking the short hike to the entrance we saw a rock climber way up high on the face of adjoining rocks. I bet the view from the top is outstanding! It is good to meet up with old friends. Happy to see our friend Kat, who has rebounded after losing her husband. A bonus for us are her ... read more

March 1st will always be remembered as the day we spotted the Elegant Trogon our 432nd life bird, and what a terrific bird it was. We had just arrived at Patagonia State Park on Patagonia Lake in the town of Patagonia , AZ, and decided to walk the birding trail. Folks coming off the trail were telling us to hurry because the trogon had been spotted. We had tried to find this elusive bird in 2006 but we always just missed it. We hustled down the trail and saw 2 people who waved us over, and there he was!!!! We watched him for such a long time, in fact we left before the trogon did. A few days later we joined a birding group and when the trogon was spotted the group became the stereotypical bird ... read more

We've enjoyed going to Sedona to take Ernie on several hikes - Broken Arrow was an all time favorite of Steve Wilson's and we loved it. Beautiful views and scenery during the entire hike. Then to Javelina Cantina for margaritas and $1 tacos! Yes, we do find the great happy hours. Another hike yesterday in Boynton Canyon and vista - what bright blue skies. Playing pickelball everyday and it's great fun. More later... read more

We made it to Verde Valley RV Park - a beautiful park with trees and grass south of Sedona about 18 miles. It was warm and sunny and the pool felt great. Ernie loves it here and likes to hike. We have a great spot with grass next to the camper for Ernie to run in circles. Learned to play pickleball with some friends we met at the hot tub. It's half court tennis with smaller paddles. Lots of fun. Check out our site!... read more

What Beauty we have in this country! We just spent 4 nights camping in the Grand Canyon. We had beautiful campsites, hiked a bit of Bright Angel and Kaibab (about 1 mile down), saw sunset at Powell Point, walked the Trail of Time showing the geology of the canyon from 50 yrs to 1,900 million years (yes, that's a billion +!), had examples of rocks from each layer to see and touch, had lunch overlooking the canyon in El Tovar lounge, and ended with Sunrise Easter Service at Mather Point with the sunrising behind the cross! A perfect way to end a perfect stay. Our friends from church, Doug and Judy were there and we ended our days with them and meet them on the trails. Our friends from skiing, Chris, Rich, and Hage were there ... read more
