Sunday August 26, 2007 We wanted to take our time driving back through the park. We got up early and were on the road by 7:00 am. The temperature was about 41 degrees. It was clear and sunny. I was able to stop along the way and take photos of the early morning light on the land. As we made our way down the road, Mt. McKinley finally showed itself. It looked magnificent. It dwarfs the other peaks. What a great departing gift! We didn’t see any animals. The park is so huge seeing animals is really a hit or miss thing. We were pleased with what we had seen in the park. It would have been nice to have seen a wolf or lynx, but that’s really unusual. We made it to Fairbanks by 1:00 ... read more

Nenana As we headed north from Denali we stopped in Nenana to tour the railroad museum. The museum was set in the old train depot and had the feel of the early 20th century. A lot of the town’s history was in this museum. Nenana was where the Golden Spike was driven by President Harding in 1923. The Golden Spike was to symbolize the completion of the railroad from Seward to Fairbanks. The town was interesting with lots of flowers and sod roofs on some shops and the visitor’s center. One shop owner played the accordion to her flowers while sitting on the front porch. As we entered Fairbanks it was raining and grey which should have been accompanied by some gothic music as we turned down the street to our luxury hotel my stomach began to flop. Sure enough there on the right was the Westmark Inn which had a big ole Holland America Cruises bus parked out front. Yes folks welcome to the hotel that puts up the cruise ships passengers who prefer to live in Michigan and Ohio!!!!!!!!!! I thought the Hilton in Anchorage was the only one that could possibly be this bad but again I was a Polyanna. When we checked in I asked if we had 2 queen beds in the room and I definately wanted an upgrade room. The girl said it had 2 double beds but that it was a suite and very, ... read more

Ted's Uncle Ron, Uncle Jeff and Aunt Tonni have arrived! We're all staying together in downtown Fairbanks and the days have been filled with exciting adventures. We were fortunate enough to experience a float plane ride, along the Yukon Flats and river beds surrounding Fairbanks. The plane takes off and lands from the water. From 100 feet in the air, we were able to spot dozens of moose hanging out in the swampy waters below. We were a half hour into our flight when our pilot informed us that we were going to turn back and take an alternate route home, because there was a storm brewing in the distance. He had spotted some lightning and apparently, small planes and lightning do not agree! As we made our way back, the storm quickly worsened. There ... read more

We have only been in Alaska for one night/ two days and already have so many great experiences/ stories. First being we finished driving the Alaska highway which was a very fun and beautiful section of the trip. Were now in Fairbanks and absolutly love it!!!! The people have been more than hospitable. The first stop we made was to the local dog park where we met some folks that grew up in the Fort Collins area (just north of Denver on I-25). They gave us their cell numbers and assured us they were more than willing to help show us around. This first encounter with locals was really a tell tale sign of the red carpet treatment we were about to receive. After dinner, by the fire, the man in the site next to ... read more

Now back at Honolulu Airport. Have a beer........ have another beer, only so we can view the fascinating garden at the airport right next to where the beer is. Maree goes off to take photos of the garden (which you will probably see on our return or here if we can get it working .. looks just like home only more established and trimmed to perfection). Meanwhile Des has a snooze, sort of, nearly falls off his chair (now does that sound like Des?). Anyway the slip attracts the attention of the couple at the next table who turn our to be Victorians doing the same Canadian Tour as we will be, only backwards. Nice couple. 9pm Again Sunday AGAIN/STILL. NorthWEST Airline - squeeseee 3-3 plane not even leg room for us!! Des Row (can't remember), ... read more
