We took an unplanned trip from Whitehorse, YT to Skagway, AK, and Haines, then back north to Haines Junction, and the Alaska Highway, called the Klondike Loop. Several folks we met raved about the beauty of the landscape driving there and ocean inlet upon which both of these charming villages sit. And they were right about all of it. This would be our only exposure to the Inside Passage. We rate the Klondike Highway views as the best we've seen to date. And the photo does not do it justice. At Emerald Lake along the highway we ran into our friends from Victoria Lake/Germany for the third time! We stopped at Caribou Crossing Wildlife Refuge and enjoyed the museum of all species of stuffed animal from Alaska, including the prehistoric Wholly Mammoth! Skagway is a preserved ... read more

We checked out of our hotel this morning, but before we headed home we went to Mushing School. At the dog camp we changed into some Arctic gear that our guide provided. Glenn & I were wearing parkas that made us look like we were pregnant. First Kathy taught us how to fall from the sled. If you fall and don’t tightly hold onto the sled the dogs will leave you stranded. We stood holding the sled, and then we collapsed to the ground and got back up again. Gee, I’m so glad we PRACTICED that. Kathy untangled heaps and heaps of cords for the dog leads. Kathy went above and beyond her duties by teaching us that “the lead dog is the one at the front.” She was a very sweet lady, and a bit ... read more

Dark & Cold. The weather of Fairbanks does not provide much motivation to do anything at all. Our rumbling stomachs, however, got us out of the hotel. Glenn writes: I want food. Now. And “Brittana” says let’s go to McDonalds. I argued profusely. “No way, McDonalds is bad for you,” but being as stubborn as she is, she forced me to go to McDonalds. We went to the North Pole’s McDonalds. The light poles are like candy canes—red and white stripes. Everything is red and green…seats on swing sets and all. Santa must live here. We finally found Santa’s House. Although it wasn’t difficult; it was on St. Nicolas Dr. Who woulda guessed? (McDonalds was on Santa Claus Lane, too). I went to Santa’s House. I’ve seen Rudolph. Not much to write about. We took photos ... read more

Today was a long day of driving. It’s about a six hour drive to Fairbanks depending on the weather. We began our trip on the Glenn Highway (which I pointed out to Glenn) at about 1:00pm. Have you figured out that we’re not early risers yet? At our first toilet break and gas station stop Glenn fueled up the vehicle while I ran inside. When I came out the car was directly in front of the gas station doors. Glenn explained that he didn’t want my little American butt to have to walk any further than I had to…that would just be un-American. Alaska is a big state with a relatively small population. For being one-third the size of the continental United States, Alaska’s population is less than ¾ million. Towns are generally far apart with ... read more

Thursday, November 22, 2007, Thanksgiving Day On the road again, with my children in Elan’s car again. Not getting to drive again…. And so we are back again on a road trip to Fairbanks to celebrate Thanksgiving with Jim, Kathy & John. We planned on leaving at 7 or 8 this morning but it did not happen till 9AM. I think that while at one time driving to Fairbanks was 7 or 8 hours now it is less time. Elan was mentioning that the trip seemed much longer as a kid. He needed his pillow, blankets, books, cd’s, walkman and his teddy bear. Now we just hop in the car and we are off. Molly of course still has Sugar Plum who is a world traveler. Checked the road conditions and the road was supposed to ... read more

The Tuckers have made it to Alaska. We arrived Monday at 6:30 our time and have spent the last two days in Fairbanks at Pikes Waterfront Lodge. Fairbanks is very civilized and has all the luxuries. We wont get the real Alaska experience until we get into the village. Mike and I are training to work for the Yukon Flats School District and it has been alot of information. Todays sessions opened with a G'wichin blessing in the native language and it was very pretty. We are considered chocos and will be that until we are no longer new comers...then we will be sour doughs. Very interesting dynamics here. Noone seems to worry about fashion only warmth and comfort which makes sense :) Ive seen very few women fuss with cosmetics and that will be hard ... read more

September 5, 2007 The trip out of Denali was interesting because the clouds would separate and let the sun peak through then cloud up again. Colors are always deeper when it’s cloudy so the tundra colors popped on the mountainsides. It took us 2 hours to reach the main entrance. I wanted to get all the photos I could before we left Denali. The foliage is just starting to turn on the road to Fairbanks. We ran into some rain showers, but the sun was shining by the afternoon and the temperature reached the low 70’s. In Fairbanks we made preparations for our trip home. We got the oil changed, stocked up on groceries, did the laundry and got connected to the internet. It may be awhile before we are connected again. We’re ready to go ... read more

Thursday, August 30, 3007 In the morning we visited the wildlife refuge to check on the bird banding station. In the fall and spring they band songbirds migrating through the area. There weren’t many birds migrating this morning, evidently. One of the men working with the program said it was a slow day. Usually they band 100 birds a day and by 9:00 am this morning they had only tagged 11 birds. We walked around the fields and I enjoyed taking photos. I love the birch and aspen woods.I also took time to use my telephoto lens with the Sandhill Cranes. In the afternoon Frank stopped at a rock shop and while he was spending time there, I photographed old cars that the shop proprietor collected. He was an avid collector of all kinds of things; ... read more

Wednesday August 29, 2007 The clouds were too thick to see the northern lights last night so we didn’t stay up to watch. The morning, however, was bright and sunny. We went to the University of Alaska’s Museum of the North; a nice museum, interesting and contemporary. We enjoyed the video presentation on the Aurora. It was scientific, but well done. Fairbanks is actually one of the best locations to see the northern lights and September and the spring are some of the best times. It doesn’t have to be cold, just clear. The storms that cause the auroras have 12 year cycles. Currently, it’s about half way through the cycle and the auroras increase in intensity as they peak. The more intense they are, the greater the chance to see them further south. Auroras have ... read more
