We arrived very early, not quite with the sun as the sun rises around 3 AM, but around 6 AM. We make breakfast, pack our lunches and head off to the park. We start our day with a summit of Mount Healy. It's only a 3100 foot elevation gain, but this is accomplished in less than 2 miles so it is quite steep. And to our happy surprise, the sun is bright and shining and it's almost 70°. It is crystal clear, and we have the promise of getting a great view of Mount Denali. Alaska fun fact: Mt Denali is the tallest mountain in the United States, also known as Mt McKinley. The highest peak is over 20,000 feet. Mt Healy is challenging, but the views at the top are incredible. We make our way ... read more

Alaska 5-6 Boarded the Denali train for the eight hour ride to the park. The weather was cloudy and rainy but we were comfortable and warm in our domed car. The motion of the train soon puts us in a sleepy state and we doze, awaking when there is a wildlife sighting which is seldom. The scenery is amazing, towering mountains, tracks of tundra, thick woods and rushing rivers and streams enchant us. Train food is very good and there is a bar offering coffee, tea, hot chocolate, juices, sodas, beer, wine and mixed drinks. There is a bistro car for snacks and light meals and our private dining car is below our domed seats. We arrive at the Denali Train Depot and are transferred to the Grande Denali smoothly. The reception there was less than ... read more
Denali/Mt. McKinley shrouded in clouds.
Why did the Caribou cross the road?
To get at succulent grasses.

I just came back from an 11 day Denali Park Tour and 7 cruise. I organized this trip for 20 people, consisting of family and friends. We saw so much beautiful scencery on this tour: glaciers, wildlife, waterfalls, the Tongress Rain Forest. We were also surprised at how much we learned about the rich Alaskan history and culture.... read more

This afternoon we are on a bus into the Denali national park Where hopefully we get to see the bears, moose and caribou in their natural habitat. 7 odd hours in a bus.... Quiet morning sleep in as we again had nothing planned for extras that morning. Breakfast while clothes washed and then dried. Off downtown to look at the shops. Walk down the hill good for the legs and lungs. Into the gift shops for stuff. Lots of gift shops with the same sort of stuff - all have polar fleece marked at 50% off - all pretty crappy as well. Souvenirs abound so we get bits and I notice a new real polar fleece so buy that as well. Get some food for the trip (they provide a box lunch which we were told ... read more

Last night was our “welcome” dinner even though it was our second night. It was at the Murie Learning Center. Dinner itself was a buffet, with Tuscan chicken, veggie lasagna, bowtie pasta with shrimp and salad. Dessert was tiramisu which was interesting because it was frozen. After dinner we had a talk by a naturalist, which was interesting, but a bit long winded. Another early morning today, bus for the Park left at 7 am. Converted school bus, so a bit uncomfortable, but it was equipped with a camera controlled by the driver, and some screens, so when we spotted animals in the distance, he zoomed in and we were able to see them. This place was GORGEOUS. My pictures will never do it justice. The foliage is changing color, so the meadows are a mix ... read more

Up early to have the bag out by 6:30 and meet in the lobby at 7:15. for some reason, group picture isn't taken anyplace cool, but rather on the stairs of the Anchorage Sheraton hotel. Drove to the Iditarod museum (and gift shop). Since it's the end of the season, decent sales on stuff.... Unfortunately, because we were early, we didn't get to see any puppies. Then we drove to Talkeetna (which I'd heard of thanks to a Man vs. Food episode) to catch the train to Denali Park. We were in a "private" car with some folks from another tour company. What's funny is that we saw their tour guide when we were leaving the Sheraton and she liked my Wicked sweatshirt. Train ride up was gorgeous, I stood outside for a bit, but it ... read more

Geoff cooked up a great hot breakfast this morning - maple flavoured bacon, eggs, tomato and toast. It was a much needed change from the regular cereal, yoghurt and bagels we have been having each morning. Drove to Mile 15 and hiked the 2 mile savage river loop trail. It was a good hike but very windy. At one section of the trail we veered off up the mountain to get a better view of the river and the wind was blowing so strong it was difficult to keep standing upright. The air is so fresh out here. You fill your lungs up with nothing but pure fresh air. There is no pollution - and the scenery is something else too. The leaves are quickly changing into autumn colours - just an awesome sight to see. ... read more

Had a sleep in this morning till 7.30am....yes that's a sleep in when your in Alaska. We have so much too fit in and the days are long so we don't want to waste any of it! This morning we were off to the visitors centre to catch the bus to go see the parks dog sledding team and then the afternoon doing a river raft down the Nenano river. Today we will be making use of the parks laundry and hot showers. Even though the RV has good hot water in the shower, the pressure is not good enough to wash my hair. There are lots of places around Alaska that offer pay showers which usually include use of a towel as well. Generally they cost around $5 per shower. I guess back packers and ... read more

Woke up this morning to the sound of rain on the roof of the RV. Had an early breakfast then headed over to the bus stop over from the campground as we were booked in for a 6.45ampick up by the shuttle bus. Today we were heading into the park to Mile 85 on a bus trip to Wonder Lake. Cars can only drive to mile 15 of the park. After that you need to catch a shuttle bus, tour bus, cycle or walk through the park. This helps to preserve the environment and keep the wildlife safe in this beautiful park. The shuttle bus costs $46 per person for the return journey to Wonder Lake and is an 11 hour bus ride on a gravel road through mountains. The road is very narrow with huge ... read more

This morning we were booked in for a scenic flight over the Alaskan Mountain ranges. Arrived at k2 aviation at 8am ready for our 8.30 flight only to be told that the fog was too thick for the flight to happen at that time. Organised to go back at 10am.Fingers crossed the fog would lift by then. Visited Stubb the cat again who was still asleep in the same place as last night. Looked like he hadn't moved an inch! Coffee at the Roadhouse seemed like a good idea. $1.50 buys you bottomless cups of brewed coffee. The place was packed but we managed to find a seat and filled in time finishing off yesterday's blog and posting photos on Facebook. Some info about Talkneeta: population is 600. It is a mountaineering town built by miners, ... read more
