Saturday, 12 June 2010 Denali NP Gena here---so the blog won’t be as detailed. Charlie, Kerry and I went on the shuttle bus ride out to Wonder Lake, where all the wonderful pictures of Mt. McKinley are taken. However, they must be taken on better days than today, as we had rain for the moment we awoke until we got back to the campground. Not nice at all. In fact, more than half the folks that started on the journey out to Wonder Lake, got off at the halfway point and went back to the Wilderness Access Center where we got on the shuttle. Once we hit the gravel road, the windows got so dirty, you couldn’t see through them. We made several stops at rest areas where they supplied a bucket of water and squeegees ... read more

We got to the Wilderness Access Center at Denali National Park at 8:45 for our shuttle bus trip that was supposed to leave at 9:15. Our driver was late, maybe 15 or 20 minutes. It had rained all night, a drizzle mostly, but there were puddles everywhere and it was chilly, in the mid 40's. We were happy to board the bus and get in out of the cold, but the heater wasn't doing much on the bus. The bus was only about half full, so it was easy to get window seats. We were going as far as Wonder Lake, a trip of 85 miles each way. There were rest stops and animal viewing stops and mountain viewing stops built into the schedule, making the trip 11 hours long. Since it was raining and the ... read more

Awoke to a bright sunny morning. Took Mo for a walk first thing and could see Denali from the Highway - - quickly got the camera and took a few shots. Hard to get good shots with clouds behind the mountain - - but it was spectacular (especially at 6:30 AM) We stopped at WalMikes just up the road from the campground - - what a neat place. He had a little bit of just about everything. We headed on up the highway and stopped at the South Mountain View overlook in Denali State Park - - got a couple shots of Denali (Couldn't see the top) Had another moose and her calf run across the road in front us today. Didn't get a picture. The only critter pricture we got today was of a very ... read more

Wal*Mike's

On our way out of Trapper Creek we stopped in at Wal*Mike's. If he doesn't have it, you don't need it. He has everything from antacid to zipper oil. A fun place to look around, some antiques, some hardware, tires, t-shirts, antlers, wood stoves, a few souvenirs, and tons of junk. We stopped at a couple of overlooks to get another glimpse of Mt. McKinley, but the clouds had the top totally covered. We could see some of the other mountains in the Alaska Range, but Denali stayed hidden. We ran into a little rain here and there, but not much. We found a campground north of the Denali NP and set up campers and ate lunch before going back to the park. We visited the Wilderness Access Center, where we got tickets to ride the ... read more

After returning to Fairbanks from Barrow and the land north of the Arctic Circle, we left the next day aboard an Alaska Railroad train. The mixed passenger and freight train operated from Fairbanks to Anchorage via McKinley National Park. We disembarked at McKinley Park Station and transferred by bus to the McKinley National Park Hotel. The next day was spent on a sightseeing tour in the park, including a view of Mount McKinley (now Denali). Aboard the southbound train the following day, we continued our journey to Anchorage. The train crossed the Nenana River among others with the Alaska Range always in sight until we reached the Matanuska Valley some 40 miles from Anchorage.... read more
