What another incredible week this has been!! Ten people including one guide (and me) traversed via van the entire Dalton Highway - yes, the highway upon which the Ice Road Truckers show is based - So much history, culture, and life that is not part of that show. It is another world and though Truckers rule the road, there is a domain on all sides of that road that is reigned by natural marvels! That is the Dalton Highway we saw and experienced though the truckers were informative and sometimes quite entertaining. Theirs is a culture all their own based on listening to the CB crackle with helpful news and friendly greetings. They are a caring bunch in spite of their grueling schedules. We stopped often; I met a ton of people, and we stayed in ... read more

Just FYI - I am where I am supposed to be (Sitka, AK) after a wonderful week to the far reaches of northern Alaska. I will do a quick update in the morning before joining the Wildlife/Glacier Cruise here. Just wanted to let those tracking closely know that I'm OK - just too tired tonight to post but will have some time in the morning to do so along with at least some pictures. What a crazy, wonderful week!!... read more

So, the saga continues.... This leg of the trip has turned out to be more challenging than the others. After the fiasco that finally got us here earlier this week, we are indeed still stuck in Barrow. We finished up our work early this morning and went to the airport to see if we could catch the morning flight (there are only 2 flights a day here). We were on standby and had checked our bags in. Once all the passengers had boarded the plane they realized that they only had one seat available. We discussed it a bit and decided that our team lead should take the seat as he had more pressing family matters than either Steve or I did. He gave us the keys to the rental car and headed to security to ... read more

Greetings from the "Top of the World!" I'm here in Barrow, Alaska where it's a balmy -58 (that's right, fifty-eight below) with the wind-chill. I didn't believe it when they told me that at the FAA Flight Service Center but they checked with the local National Weather Station (across the street) and had the same reading. Needless to say it's darn cold. It's been an adventure getting here. We were supposed to fly in on Monday from Anchorage via Fairbanks. Once we got to Fairbanks, we were notified that the plane had a weight problem and that none of the Barrow passenger's bags were going to make it. Since the equipment we use to do our jobs was in our checked luggage, we didn't really have a choice. We also had some work to finish up ... read more

see barrow, ak. and clay in their splendor. well, barrow anyway. foto 1) whale ribs over skull foto 2) standing on the arctic ocean foto 3) alaskan palms foto 4) midday despite the minus 20F(-28C) including the windchill of course, i couldn't resist the photo opportunity provided by the baleen(whale bone) 'palm' trees. in the foreground is snow whilst that is a very frozen arctic ocean in the background. thought i should explain as the photo was underexposed and of low quality. it was a great visit (less than 4 weeks) but i wouldn't want to live there. sadly the polar bears were further out and the moms to be were in den giving birth. guess i'll have to go back to see them?... read more

hi all, some of you are aware that i decided to once again head to the great white north, even further north than previously . this time i find myself in 'barrow', ak. it is on the arctic ocean and is the northernmost city in north america. some canadian cities are further north but they are on islands. today warmed up to a balmy 2 degrees above 0 (with a windchill of 18 below) so i decided i'd head out for a walkabout. well i kept it short, out one door and in the other about 25 yards away. that was far enough, considering my hatless, and jacketless state. i just wasn't as bold as i was on sunday when my buddy jerry took me to see the 'palm trees'. these are poles with whale baleen ... read more
