On our last day at Hunting Island State Park we took a ride to the pier. It was bad timing on our part since a pilot whale had beached itself along the surf line. We watched as it struggled to keep its blow hole out of the water. The park personal were waiting for the DNR to arrive before they attempted any help. We left after an hour of watching. Very sad to see our first , up close, of a whale in this kind of situation. The next day we learned that 4 more whales had stranded themselves in the area and eventually died. They loaded them on a flat bed trucks and took them to Charlotte for examination. We never did hear what was wrong. Our good friends Tim and Ann introduced us to ... read more

Whoops. I am so very sorry everyone. I have kinda epically failed at blogging about this latest adventure of mine, so I am truly sorry about that. I will try to be better, but I can't promise anything. It's tough cause there is less going on than some of my previous experiences, and my internet time is less frequent. But enough with the excuses. Things have been going very well. I am enjoying the job very much. I had a pretty stressful week two weeks ago, mostly just a lot of stuff happening a few days' time, but it all turned out okay, so that was good. Our guided tours start tomorrow (hopefully... I am supposed to give the tour tomorrow, but it is also supposed to be crazy storming tomorrow so we may have to ... read more

We left Pensacola about 8:10 (Bob was slow) and rode out of town. We were out of the traffic real fast and the riding was nice. Yesterday I stopped by Cinnabon and bought some cinnamon sticks and save them for today. When we stopped for second breakfast I got them out and we had a feast. When we rode along the beach we stopped twice and walked to the beach and took pictures and we got some postcards for the folks back home. We were not in a real big hurry and the day was fun. Around 12:30 we made it to the state line. We started out by crossing the road and taking some pictures on the Florida sign. We then rode 200 yards and did the same with the Alabama sign. I'm sure those ... read more

We're on the road again!!! We left Brighton on the 26th, and decided to go a bit west to avoid some of the winter weather south and east. Interstate 69 to 65 brought us to the south on clear roads with lots of sunshine. The last trace of snow was in Birmingham, AL - Ron gets credit for seeing the first armadillo (a live one) and I get the first palm tree sighting. So far only a few things we realize we left behind - most importantly my earplugs! I had a set especially made so I wouldn't smother Ron with a pillow some night when the snoring got too bad. Kris is mailing it so he will live to snore another night. We are at Gulf Shores State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Lovely park, ... read more

Well, I never expected this to happen, but that just goes to show how unexpected life can be. When I left the crane ranch, I was quite sad and hated leaving because I was worried that I might never get to come back and see all those people again. Then, just a little over 2 months after leaving Mississippi, I got a call from Lauren telling me I could have a job at Bon Secour helping the biologist there, if I wanted it. So, totally unexpectedly, following Thanksgiving I found myself once again making the drive down to the gulf coast, this time to Gulf Shores Alabama. So far it has been quite lovely. The house I am living in on the refuge is insane, there is simply no other way to describe it. It is ... read more

9-22-10-10 Had one last walk on our deserted beach this morning and then headed for Gulf Shores, AL. Glenn’s Aunt Sue lived for some time in Gautier, so we tried to take a few pictures along the way to Pascagula. We stopped at the Visitor’s Center just after we crossed the Alabama line. The nicest grandma gave us our state map, then proceeded to tell us all of the good spots in the area...dining, attractions, etc. Turns out her son lives in Tacoma and her daughter in San Francisco. She said she’d take a ride back that way with us when we go :) Arrived at the Gulf Shores RV Park and set up camp. It is a small park, but everyone we’ve seen is really nice. We drove into town...it’s probably 5 miles...and stopped at ... read more

Spanish Fort. Let the fun begin.Friday, June 11. Pack the car and hit the road early. Head for the community of Spanish Fort which is across the bay from Mobile, and joined Capt Geoff Woodliff on his Airboat Express (dot com) for a one-hour trip to explore the Mobile-Tensaw Delta. Just before the 10 AM takeoff we get to meet and hold a baby alligator. Cute little rascal. Then four of us board the airboat along with our captain, don headphones, and cruise the river checking out flora like wild hibiscus and marsh grasses and fauna like gulls, ducks and egrets. But what I really get a kick out of is the jumping fish. Like in the song from Porgy and Bess. "Summertime. And the livin' is easy. Fish are jumpin'. And the cotton is high." ... read more

So, my parents had their 30th anniversary celebration in Gulf Shores, Alabama. This at first sight doesn't seem like your typical vacation spot, but man was it a pleasant surprise! The beaches were clean, quiet even if the water wasn't the best. It was so peaceful there, a great place to take your family. They have excellent seafood from what we hear at "The Oyster House" but our experience there was mediocre, That's not to say the trip wasn't really fun and enjoyable. In addition to the 30th celebration my little niece Morgan had her first birthday. She was tired and a little cranking because she missed her nap but it was still hilariously fun :) ... read more
