About an hour's drive east from New Orleans is Biloxi, Mississippi. We had pondered spending a night in Biloxi before we arrived. Thereafter, we concluded that we would only be passing through, and quickly at that. Perhaps Biloxi was much nicer in its heyday, and in all fairness, Katrina pretty much wiped this place off the map, but the town lacked any allure from what we could garner in an hour's time. A handful of big casinos were dotted along Biloxi's strip of coastline. We took a stroll through the Hard Rock Biloxi and once inside, you wouldn't be able to tell that you were not in the Hard Rock Vegas but for the thick southern drawl of the majority of patrons. Outside the casino, the ocean is still too brown and merky to be inviting ... read more

Oh, Boy, it's a Balloon Parade.Sunday, June 20. I get up at 4 AM and head bout 30 miles south to Foley for a hot air balloon festival. I'm not sure what to expect, but hope it will be beautiful. I am not disappointed. Balloons of every color float overhead, quiet save for the occasional whoosh as jets of flame heat the air in the balloons giving them lift. I love it when they glide right overhead. It’s as good as a front-row seat at the Macy’s parade. Once the last of over 40 balloons has drifted by, there’s a Frisbee-catching performance by the ‘Disc-Connected K-9s’, a group of very talented former strays who’ve been taken in by what must be two of the kindest dog-lovers in the world, a husband and wife team whose whole ... read more

The Schooner had her first ferry boat crossing across Mobile Bay from Fort Morgan to get to Dauphin Island where we thought we would laze for a day or so resting up for the Big Easy! Dauphin has some great attractions. It was the site, at Fort Gaines, of the Civil War Battle of Mobile. This is where Admiral Farragut is quoted as saying, "Damn the Torpedoes - full speed ahead!" as he went on to capture the Fort and the Confederate fleet. The campgrounds are convenient from the ferry slip and within walking distance to the Estuarium, a fascinating educational attraction with a great collection of live and preserved specie that inhabit the Mobile Bay Estuary. We had the pleasure of observing two volunteer docents interacting with school children who were so engaged you could ... read more
