A bad day to wear a short skirt
Published: March 7th 2012North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » CobaCoba is the only Mayan ruin with its original Mayan name, the names of the others as we know them today were given to them by the Spanish when they arrived in Mexico. We had already visited the ruins at Tulum which, compared to the ruins of Coba, are miniscule. I knew the area would be bigger than Tulum but didn’t realise that the whole site stretches 92km squared. Only about 2% of that has actually been excavated and restored though. We had a bit of a nightmare when we originally booked this trip as our transport broke down before it even got to pick us up so the tour company , as a way of apologising, organised for us to go on another day with a private guide, which turned out to be a really ... read more
Hannable's experience at Coba was antithetical to our previous experience at Tulum! The tallest of structures there were open for the public to climb! There weren't so many tourists! We finally felt a powerful inexplicable "energy!" We also began getting into some of the more fascinating mythology of the ancient Maya, most notably the lore of the "Gigantes" (literal Giants as in 8 to 11 ft. people) Noble had a "psychic" premonition whilst walking the trail to one of the archeological sites at Coba. The experience went as follows: I (Noble) was simply walking down the path to the next set of ruins on our journey. I was thinking about the physical construction of the huge complexes and how it was accomplished. Suddenly, I got an image of a very large brown man holding in one ... read more
Hola amigos! just to update you on our situation here, since we are stuck waiting over an hour for a bus at the moment. Today we are in Cobá, but i will start where i left off last time. We caught the free bus from our hostel, The Weary Traveller (which was pretty average really, but they raved about it in lonely planet-second night there we had a full dorm and one of the older guys was keeping us up all night coughing his lungs out and peeing with the door open in the bathroom so it echoed round the whole bloody room! but anyway...) the bus dropped us about 1km from the Tulum ruins-at the beach. We walked up the road to find a few giant tours of people had just arrived-yay!>not! but the ruins ... read more
Da ich mic... read more
Vandaag in Coba. Leuk.... read more
The Coba ruins are at a little bit of a distance from Playa del Carmen, about 125km. We reached a little late in the afternoon as we had to check out of the hotel, so had to rush a little bit. We rented bicyles to move around the ruins which are in two formations, each about 1 Km in different directions from the entry point. Cycles are perfect. Coba has the highest Mayan pyramid temple - Nohoch Mul which has some 800 steep steps that we climbed to reach the top. From there, you can see the rainforest canopy in all directions. Cycled about to the other sites, got back to the car, realized we hadn't locked it and all our baggage was in it since we had checked out but luckily, nothing stolen. There was ... read more
Coba, 17-01-1990. Coba is also an old and ancient mayan ruin side, though not as well excavated as Chichen Itza. Most of the piramides and other ruins are still mostly covered plants and trees. We have come to the conclusion that 25.00 mexican peso a night for a double room is the cheapest price we can get for accomodation and raelly quite a bit above our budget, can't be changed! We have some serious plans to actually camp out on top of one of these piramides here in Coba. ... read more
Coba, 18-01-1990. This trip is not like any other trip i have made before. The high costs make it necesary for us to live on a budget, not something i am used to! Travelling together has certain advantages but also certain disadvantages. James is very keen on double dating like we did a few nights ago with these due signorine dÌtalia. The poor bloke has always been extremely shy around women i after our double dating back in Valladolid i have come to the conclusion James expects me not just to talk my way into the pants on one lady but talk us both into the pants of both ladies, not really sure why he does not do his own bloody chatting up instead. However apart from the woman thing we do get on well together. ... read more
The grounds of Coba extend at least 50 square km. and are set in lush tropical jungle with only an estimated 5 % unearthed. There are about 40 sacbeobs - a network of extensive stone-paved avenues - passing through Coba. One of them running all the way to the mayan settlement of Yaxuna, nearly a 100 km. away. Probably 40.000 mayans lived here at its heyday 600 AD to 900 AD. It is unknown why the site was abandoned!!! ... read more
