I have been to many archaeological sites in all of the Americas. Can I consider Coba to be one that you should visit if you're in the area? Totally! Site is not far from Tulum, (45 minutes to 1 hour). Contrarily to other Maya sites, you can still climb the biggest pyramid! This is a big plus as you can really sense how these buildings were a major achievement when they were built, if you're on the top of it! Site's is in the forest so it' s never too hot and there's plenty of shade. For those who can't walk too much, you can hire a tricycle taxi, (man powered), for a few pesos). One part of the site is more quiet so you can go there to look for birds, especially early in the ... read more

Nohoch Mul at Cobá is the highest Mayan pyramid in the Yucatán Peninsula, 137 feet high, and I thought I read the 3rd highest in all of the Mayan world. I missed out on it last December which I seriously regretted because it has been rumored for years that the authorities were going to close off the pyramid to climbing. That is thankfully not the case and yesterday I climbed the pyramid - along with dozens of other tourists - for one of the best views over the endless jungle. $US ≈ 19 Mexican pesos ($M) ValladolidBeen to Valladolid both of my previous trips to Mexico. Town isn't much but it's in a great location for easy trips to many cenotes and ruins. Accommodation and food Third trip, third place to stay this time Hostel 230 ... read more

110km to go!

Finally the Coba Ruins, which is another stunning Mayan site near the gorgeous Riviera Maya. I like in particular this Mayan site cause is not by far as touristic as other popular destinations in the Yucatan peninsula, and I like the fact of being there almost by myself, hidden in the forest to contemplate this stunning masterpiece of mankind. I always say I love the feeling, when there are not many tourists, of being an early explorer of these magnificient site. Coba came to be around 100 A.D. and became a major city in the 600 A.D. Also interesting is that some of the surrounding structures have not yet been excavated and in a few years it would be curious to see what it would look like. The big temple pyramid of Coba is awesome from the ... read more

Coba is the only Mayan ruin with its original Mayan name, the names of the others as we know them today were given to them by the Spanish when they arrived in Mexico. We had already visited the ruins at Tulum which, compared to the ruins of Coba, are miniscule. I knew the area would be bigger than Tulum but didn’t realise that the whole site stretches 92km squared. Only about 2% of that has actually been excavated and restored though. We had a bit of a nightmare when we originally booked this trip as our transport broke down before it even got to pick us up so the tour company , as a way of apologising, organised for us to go on another day with a private guide, which turned out to be a really ... read more

Hannable's experience at Coba was antithetical to our previous experience at Tulum! The tallest of structures there were open for the public to climb! There weren't so many tourists! We finally felt a powerful inexplicable "energy!" We also began getting into some of the more fascinating mythology of the ancient Maya, most notably the lore of the "Gigantes" (literal Giants as in 8 to 11 ft. people) Noble had a "psychic" premonition whilst walking the trail to one of the archeological sites at Coba. The experience went as follows: I (Noble) was simply walking down the path to the next set of ruins on our journey. I was thinking about the physical construction of the huge complexes and how it was accomplished. Suddenly, I got an image of a very large brown man holding in one ... read more

Hola amigos! just to update you on our situation here, since we are stuck waiting over an hour for a bus at the moment. Today we are in Cobá, but i will start where i left off last time. We caught the free bus from our hostel, The Weary Traveller (which was pretty average really, but they raved about it in lonely planet-second night there we had a full dorm and one of the older guys was keeping us up all night coughing his lungs out and peeing with the door open in the bathroom so it echoed round the whole bloody room! but anyway...) the bus dropped us about 1km from the Tulum ruins-at the beach. We walked up the road to find a few giant tours of people had just arrived-yay!>not! but the ruins ... read more

Da ich mich... read more

Vandaag in Coba. Leuk.... read more
