Arriving in the city of Puebla (population over 2 million) we were greeted by the biggest bus terminal we had ever seen. In other Mexican cities there were often individual terminals for the different companies and at least they were split between first and other classes of bus. But in Puebla they were all in the same location, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of them. We were only staying for one night and didn't want to waste time looking for a hotel. Taking a Lonely Planet recommendation we took a taxi straight to the Hotel Puebla Plaza. It was a little pricey at P$550 (US$52) but the room was quite lovely and a little posh so we took it. It was around midday that we started to explore the historic town. We obtained a map from ... read more

Determined to make one more tourist stop before returning to Mexico City, we spent New Year's Eve in Puebla. Given the city’s population of over a million, and its claim to fame as home to - amongst other things - the chocolate-based sauce mole (pronounced 'moh-lay'), a retired Popemobile, and a local Oktoberfest, we imagined that New Year's Eve would prove a lively date on the calendars of the gastronome, the religious, and the reveller. We managed to find an establishment on the main square or zócalo which would provide us with dinner and the 12 grapes that tradition requires be rapidly consumed with each toll of the bell as the new year is rung in. Taking a preprandial ramble, we noticed a large queue spilling out of a Kentucky Fried Chicken and halfway down the ... read more

We had a 7am start today. First stop was Teotihuacan to climb the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. I climbed them last weekend with my GAP tour group so I stayed back and helped Lisa buy and prepare lunch. That gets my lunchtime responsibilities out of the way for the rest of the tour. After lunch we took the Tucan bus (it's painted bright yellow with a Tucan on the side so you can't miss it) to Puebla. On the way we stopped and took photos of Popocatepetl, the second highest volcano in Mexico. Our hotel in Puebla is lovely and perfectly located opposite the town square. Today is Mexican Independence Day so there are street stalls, music, clowns and lots of families on the streets. Puebla is famous for talavera ceramic tiles and ... read more

After 4 days in big ol´Mexico City, I decided to see what some of the smaller towns were like, so I travelled 2 hours by bus to a cute town called Puebla. It is really dinky and there are lots of old beautiful brightly-coloured buildings. There is a main square where they have performances and entertainment every night, and people selling helium balloons on every corner. I also spent an afternoon in a nearby town called Cholula, which is home to the widest pyramid ever built. Not that it looks like a pyramid, mind you- it is all covered in grass, and when the Spanish invaded they built a church on it! Have been eating lots of yummy spanish food. At the moment cheese quesadillas are my favourite and I´m still laughing at plates of refried ... read more

Our next stop of our travels was to the city of Puebla, which is approx. 2 hours outside of Mexico City. Upon arrival by bus, we took a cab to the apt. we would stay at during our time in Puebla. One of Carlos' friends offered her apt. while we were in Puebla. It was great to have our own apt., which was quite close to the city center, only a few dollar cab ride or a few pesos by local bus. Gracias a Viry!!! Our first day there, we decided to tour around on the tour bus due to the threatening weather. We rode on the top on the red double decker tour bus for the majority of the tour, but the last 30 minutes or so were spent down below inside the tour ... read more

Ten km west of Puebla stands the widest pyramid ever built, Piramide Tepanapa - the Great Pyramid of Cholula. By the 4th century AD, it measured 450m along each side of the base and was 65 m high, making it larger in volume than Egypt's Pyramid of Cheops. Now overgrown and topped by a Church, thanks to the Spanish, it's difficult to recognize, but still worth the visit because it's history is still impressive. Several pyramids were built on top of each other during various reconstructions. There are over 8km of tunnels that have been dug beneath the pyramid by archaeologists to penetrate each stage. The tunnels were quite impressive, especially since you first walk through the tunnels upon entrance. Carlos and I spent a good two hours walking around the archaeloogical zone. Of course, here ... read more

Puebla/CholulaToday we headed to the Universidad de las Américas in the city of Cholula. About 30 minutes from Puebla. We first heard a lecture by Dr. Ramirez on ‘NAFTA and Migration Issues’. The topic extremely interesting and very complex, and really left me with more questions than answers. One interesting note is that NAFTA in Spanish is referred to as TLCAN. We were then given a tour of the campus, which is one of the few universities in Mexico that has dorms on campus. We then had a lecture by Dr. Aguirre who spoke about ‘Mesoamerica’. The discussion revolved around the different indigenous groups in North and Central America, focusing on the language of each group and the architecture during the Pre-Classic, Classic and Post-Classic era. After eating ‘cemita’ for lunch, we went to see Cholula’s ... read more

PueblaAfter breakfast we left Mexico City and headed to the city of Puebla, by bus. Fortunately, for my vertigo, we are traveling by bus in Mexico, instead of airplanes as we did in Canada. The trip to Puebla normally takes two hours, but because of road work, it took three. We first went to the site of the Cinco de Mayo battle. Now just to clarify, May 5th is NOT Mexico’s independence day. Mexico’s independence day is actually September 16th. Instead, Cinco de Mayo commemerates Mexico winning a battle against the French that took place in Puebla. However, one year later the French defeated Mexico and took power. After checking into our hotel and lunch, we went to a ceramic store to see how ceramic pieces are made. It was really interesting to see the different ... read more
