It looks as though the photos are at the bottom of the page, so I will have to get busy and add more. I took the easy way today, and a bus to the zocalo. Now I am too tired to write much. Either way home at the end of the day is difficult. I said to a woman sitting in front of her house "Este camino me mata!" ("This hike kills me!") She laughed and said it won't be so bad next week!! She was at least 60 and has no doubt been doing it all her life. As you get closer to the center of town the graffiti becomes more dense, and as you approach the zocalo the barricades range from a few bags of sand, maybe a broken down car and some wire, ... read more

I had no intention of trecking all over the place today, not having slept well: dogs and sheep and fireworks and all. But then off I went in search of a public sculpture I had seen on the way in from the airport. I was lost, mostly, thinking "one more block or two." No map. Meandering. Discovered an aquaduct and ran into my first blocade. A wrecker was removing a graffiti ladened bus from blocking the street. There were also sandbags piled up and lots of wire of all sorts. Large groups of people. Quite tense. Then I ran into four more blockades, intact with banners and posters. People waiting and watching. I did at last find the sculpture: the bust of an Indian woman, who no one could identify and with no plack (but anti-Ruiz ... read more

Sorry that I am at this point unable to get the photos on here. I will have to read further. Anyway, did I mention that the house is located on a hill? A steep hill? I walked down to the store, because the little one up the street has so few items. I swear the angle of incline is over 45%. The cement surface is grooved, but slipping, esp. where sand has been dumped, is possible. The trip back had my legs throbbing. I pretended to stop to check out the view, but really I was sweating and out of breath. Today I ache. Guess I won't need to find a gym! There is another, less direct but less steep route that I'll attempt this afternoon. Exciting to begin discovering the neighborhood. Construction is underway in ... read more

Hopefully this entry will not evaporate like the first two. Who knows what I did. But I said that if the plane could fly, I would go. It did, well, as far as Houston. We then sat on the runway till it got so late that they had to give us all a hotel room. After our short five hour stay, we were up at 4 AM to catch the shuttle back to the airport. Suffice to say that the experience was really a book of short stories. But the luck of it was that on the usual evening flight its well after dark when you arrive. We got the sunrise with mountains emerging from the clouds crowning a hodge-podge patchwork of fields, incredible greens with a strip of marigold every so often. The house is ... read more

An early start to make the most of our precious hours here. Oaxaca was highly recommended to us by James - who spent some time working here in 2003 - however we think that we were not there at the best time. Sunday was probably not the best day of the week, but what really marred our experience was the 70,000 protesting teachers, who had been putting their point across since May. This really lessened its colonial charm, with graffiti, wrecked vehicles, barricades, stench and tarps everywhere as temporary homes. This made the 24 hours there hard to while away as everywhere we wanted to visit was either shut or shuttered; even the markets were desolate. On a more positive note we did find the office of the Oaxaca Times, where James worked, which we ... read more

We left Mexico City this morning and took a 6 hour bus ride into Oaxaca. We are going to try to leave in the morning and head to the coast. There are some ruins here that we wanted to see but the city is pretty dead because of the political problems so we think it is best to get out of here. We still are not able to upload pictures because these computers have blocks on them but we will keep trying. We hope everyone is having a good labor day weekend! We'll write more later. ... read more

From San Cristobal we took an overnight bus to Oaxaca City. It took 12 hours and I managed to keep my food down for this journey! We were both looking forward to Oaxaca as we had heard great things. Upon arrival though things didn’t start too well, the taxi dropped us on the edge of the Zocalo as he couldn’t go any further due to the entire area being blockaded with corrugated iron fences. We entered the barricade through a gap in the fence and the place looked like a bombsite. It had also been overrun by mass graffiti artists. Our first impression was that the taxi driver had just dropped us in the middle of nowhere and as it was dark (6am) we didn’t know what to think. We managed to find some street signs ... read more

(August 28th through the 30th 2005) We left early Sunday morning for Oaxaca. It was Pollo, Bere, Lucha, Kosme, and I all squeezed into Pollo's father's volkswagen; we all couldn't fit in his jeep, plus luggage. So, he and his father switched cars for the few days we were going to Oaxaca. Pollo had worked all night at his valet job, so he started the drive since he hadn't slept all night. Not because of the work, but because of an incident at work quite funny. (Well, one of the valets had dropped a customers keys in a sewer drainage--the customer had to drive his car home. Since no one was small enough, Pollo had to do the honors. He got down to his boxers, and jumped in. It took him over an hour to find ... read more

It´s so long to Mexico City and off into central Mexico, Oxaca State.... Mexico City to Pueblo Took a collectivo (VAN for 10 people) from Mexico City to Oxaca, via Pueblo. Mexico City to Oxaca (pronounced wohaka) is about 7 hours or 500 KM. This is where I met two Brits and a New Zealander (photos attached). On the way, we did a short stop (2 hours) in Pueblo (pop 1.3 million, elevation 2162m) which is a very Spanish city. I mean they didn’t want independence from Spain when the rest of the country broke away.... even today they are a little estranged (snobby) apparently. This town was also a major base for the Catholic Church, with some 70++ churches used to convert the natives. Overall it was a nice clean town though, with some wonderful ... read more

Hi all, Back again, waiting for the bus in Pochutla to take us up to Mexico city - a 15 hour haul and poor old Olga has a cold - but it is the next leg of our journey heading up north to the border with the US. We crossed back over to San Christobal in Mexico two days before the presidential elections here. We thought it would be an interesting time to be in Mexico, especially as there were strong hopes that the left-wing candidate Obrador looked very likely to win. When we settled once more into San Christobal, we asked around for possibilities to go to some of the Zapatista communities, using some good contacts from our friend Coaimhe, but found that all the communities were closed off to outsiders because Commandante Marcos and ... read more
