Palenque Travel Blogs

Background: The site of advanced Amerindian civilizations, Mexico came under Spanish rule for three centuries before achieving independence early in the 19th century. A devaluation of the peso in late 1994 threw Mexico into economic turmoil, triggering the worst recession in over half a century. The nation continues to make an impressive recovery. Ongoing economic and social concerns include low real wages, underemployment for a large segment of the population, inequitable income distribution, and few advancement opportunities for the largely Amerindian population in the impoverished southern states. Elections held in July 2000 marked the first time since the 1910 Mexican Revolution that the opposition defeated the party in government, the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Vicente FOX of the National Action Party (PAN) was sworn in on 1 December 2000 as the first chief executive elected in free and fair elections.

OK, so spent the night in Flores and nothing much happened apart from spotting Jamie Theakston walking down the pathway outside the cafe i was sitting in. (No really, a whole film crew trailed along behind him). Left for Mexico at 5am the next morning on a wee rickety minibus along a pot hole filled dirt track. I was half asleep the whole time but things appeared to keep falling off the underside of the van and weīd stop so the driver and the bag guy could fiddle around a bit before we set off again. The drive didnīt take long [View Full Entry]

Agua Azul
Agua Azul
The cascading blue waters...it was a clear day with blue skies greeting us...
Left San Cristobal and moved on further down South towards Palenque, the famous Mayan ruins located 4 hours away from San Cristobal. Decided to take a tour which took us to Palenque in a nice tour van making two stops along the way at Agua Azul and Misol-ha known for its amazing blue rivers and waterfalls. The plan was to take the full day tour and not return to San Cristobal after and stay on in El Panchan in Palenque instead. The cost makes sense compared to just paying for a bus ride. We were lucky as the weather was perfect [View Full Entry]

Palenque

North America » Mexico » Chiapas » Palenque
From Merida we took the nightbus to Palenque what seemed to be a good idea but turned out not to be such a good idea, or at least not for me (krista). The bus driver was more or less a wild rider who just bumped his horn when overtaking another car, besides he got confused with his light and turned it of and on and off all the time.... As you can imagine it gave me small heart attacks and kept my eyes wide open... Luckely Flora had a good night rest and we arrived in the early morning in Palenque [View Full Entry]

North America » Mexico » Chiapas » Palenque
Well, we found out how to upload pics onto our blogs. Tess has got hers all hooked up, Iīm still about to do it... Hereīs her blog, so you can see us in action! http://travelblog.org/bloggers/tess/ We only have a few minutes left here... Weīre in Palenque, we passed my birthday at the anxient ruins of the Mayas. It was amazing, and beautiful, we got some great pics. Donīt worry, Iīll show ya! We are leaving Palenque tomorrow for San Cristobal, and then Guatamala after that. We are taking our sweet time. The only place we blew through was Puebla, but I [View Full Entry]

Palenque is in the thick of the jungle. The Palenque ruins consist of about 4,000 buildings or something like that but there are less than 100 that you can visit because the rest are overgrown with jungle. The exploring is great out there. I feel like Iīm in a Idiana Jones movie because the temples rise through the bush and there are vines draping down everywhere and itīs like I should be searching for buried treasure or an old relic. Today Colin and I went back to the ruins (we went the first time on Colinīs birthday, the 12th) and we [View Full Entry]

This was the view of the Beach from our house, really awesome! That was a long time ago tho, but weīre figuring out how to do photos.
Soon we will be marking the historic day of my birthday. Last year I spent it in Madrid, and they declared a national holiday, and everyone got the day off, and we had a big march and stuff. Some people say it is a coincidence, because it is also Christopher Columbus day, but it wasnīt! My Birthday, Oct 12, marks the day Columbus sailed the ocean blue. So much is wrapped up in that. Now here I am, a gringo of european descent travelling in the very territories Columbus (or Colon, as weīll call him, for he is so called here) [View Full Entry]

Without a doubt, Chiapas is my favorite state in mexico. It is diverse, it has interesting politics and struggles, it has the most biodiversity of all of mexico, it has steamy jungles and high pine forests, ancient ruins, waterfalls, caves, canyons, mountains, cocoa and coffee plantations, and beaches. It lies at the southern isthmus where mexico bends easterward towards the Yucatan. If you ever come to mexico and have to decide between places, donīt skip Chiapas! My main bases were Palenque and San Cristobal del Las Casas. I arrived in Palenque from Villahermosa, going ever deeper in t [View Full Entry]

A mexican excursion

North America » Mexico » Chiapas » Palenque
We left Puerto Escondido in the afternoon on the bus to San Christobel which took 12 hours and then a 5hour bus to palenque where we spent a night and went on a day trip to visit the mayan ruins and waterfalls that palenque is famous for. For $10 we had a private mini bus that took us to the mayan ruins where you can explore old palaces and tombs unfortunatly it was a misty morning so the pictures are kind of unclear, we were then taken to misol ha which is a huge waterfall where some of the film predator [View Full Entry]
