Well prepared for the rough and tumble of slugging the tourist routes through South and Central America, we were remarking on just how relaxed we were getting as travellers - arriving fresh off the bus to a new city, with no map, no idea of where to stay, or even which direction the central district was. And it looked like it was about to bite us in the backside. Arriving at the bus terminal, we asked a departing tourist (Italian) about accommodation. Apparently it was all full as there was a large concert on. Rather than get an overnight bus out and miss the city of Campeche, we pulled a phone number from the Italian lonely planet of this tourist, called a hostel, and got a reservation easily. The reason for the drain on accommodation was ... read more

Campeche, June of 2008: First decide what you want to do, then determine how to do it! We know we want to travel Mexico. It was a Wednesday in June of 2008 and Chuck received an email notification of roundtrip airfare to Cancun for $120. This we could do! We decided we would rent a car in Cancun and drive to Campeche. The drive from Cancun to Campeche can be done in about 6 hours. We have friends in Merida, which is along the way, so we stopped there for a couple of nights before going to Campeche. While in Merida we learned that there was a tropical depression and hurricane warnings for most of the peninsula, including Campeche. Hmm, could be that this was why the airfare was so cheap. We were considering skipping Campeche ... read more

Opoustime Chiapas, Zapatisty a na chvilku i dzungli a jedeme na Yucatan. Jednim z yucatanskych statu, ktery az tolik neprekypuje turisty je Campeche s hlavnim mestem stejneho nazvu. Ahh, Campeche. Very cool town. The old part of the city (where I stayed) is still surrounded by massive walls that were built back in the day to protect the city from pirates. As time passed and the threat of pirate invasions no longer endangered the city, parts of the walls were torn down. However, a lot of it is still standing and it looks awesome. The buildings located in the old city share a similar 17th century architecture. The roads are all stone. At the Parque Principal is where all the locals hang out. They get their shoe's shined or just chill. Nice little plaza. To the north of the plaza is a beautiful church. Mexico has a flood of old 16th - 17th century churches. There are other churches in the old town, but ... read more

The Yucatan Peninsula. 22nd July - 29th July After 13 hours on a bus that seemed to make more stops than was really necessary, we arrived in Campeche bus station glad to be able to stretch our legs again. We took one of the local minibuses into town to get to the Hostal Pirata (Pirate Hostel i.e. a hostel with loads of pirate related ornaments and artifacts), which was on a quiet street within the towns old walls. We took a stroll around town and to the seafront before going back to the Hostel for a much needed siesta. In the evening we went out for a couple of drinks before taking some beers back to the Hostel where we sat on the rooftop terrace and met Brian and Jessica from New Zealand and chatted to ... read more

Day 12: Friday 11 July - Hot and Bothered in Campeche Arrive at 3am in Campeche, on the Yucatan peninsula. My hostel is in a prime spot overlooking the main plaza. Not so lucky with the room, its like sleeping in a sauna! Awake hot and bothered after a poor nights sleep. Have to do laundry in the morning (hope that answers your question Kev??!!). Leave hostel in late morning and wander Campeche's colonial streets to find a tour agency. I really want to see the Mayan ruins of Calakmul and Uxmal, particularly Calakmul whilst I'm here. My feet are killing me as they're blistered and despite walking around for ages I can't seem to find a tour agency for love or money. Eventually I find the tourist information centre who quote me 1700 pesos (85 ... read more

So, I´m finally done with all of my work! Yay! So now I have time to tell you about my weekend in Campeche. Campeche is the capital of Campeche, which is the state next to Yucatan. The bus ride is about two hours, and during it we sat and talked and slept. Once we got to the city, we took a bus to the centro, arriving in the market, which Annie wanted to see, but since it was pretty much exactly like the market in Merida only smaller, we left to go find the hostal. The first thing I noticed about Campeche was how clean and adorable it is. It´s a UNESCO world heritage site, so they have to keep it in good condition, or at least appear in good condition, because I saw from the ... read more

The air is heavy and sticks to my skin and clothes, I am in a café where ceiling fans whir overhead, travellers replenish themselves with antojitos and cerveza, a Nelly Furtado video plays on a TV mounted in the corner, sunlight leaps enthusiastically off the brightly painted facade of the building across the street and lazy traffic cruises down the narrow passageway in between. I have been here several months and a lot has changed for me. I often walk down the Malecón, a seaside esplanade alive with gorgeous pelicans and other sea birds, plucky fishing boats, families and joggers. It would be lovely if it weren't for the severe contamination causing a pungent sewer-odour to hover endlessly and the discouraging quantity of common garbage sloshing in the water and piling up on the shore. Sometimes ... read more

Merida was a really interesting place to visit. I lucked out again with the hostel I chose to stay at. It was quite large and the cliental included children under 10 (two different families) ,the usual 19-35 crowd. married 40's from France ,Sweden, and Belgum and 3 women my age. What a mix! One night lying in bed hearing other voices outside my window I thought it was a bit like a summer camp. A pleasant experience . Each evening at 7 there were salsa classes and twice @8:30 a man entertained us by singing and playing a guitar. He had an amazing voice. Sitting in the courtyard was magical. This left us with enough time to get to the designated Plaza for a cultural performance or dance whatever the case might be. It was fun. During ... read more
