Campeche is a walled seaside city. Approaching by taxi from the bus terminal we were amazed by the change when we got inside the wall. It went from a fairly normal looking clean Mexican city to an image of cobbled streets and colourful colonial houses and lantern style street lights. We had booked the Pirate Hostel and it lived up to its name with authentic nautical stuff, canons and all, and a skeleton dressed as a pirate. Our room was tiny but we had a loo and shower in separate compartments and space to sit on the roof. At P$240 (US$23) a night including breakfast it was a good price. There was lots to visit in Campeche and we started with Casa Six (P$5 each) which was a beautifully restored colonial house with period rooms. Next ... read more

We arrived in Campeche in the late afternoon to pouring rain and flooded streets. Thankfully our hotel was located on higher ground but walking through flooded streets wasn't fun. Campeche is a beautiful city, very well planned and with lots of green parks. The malecon has a walking lane and bicycle lane and many locals use them. The majority of people I saw exercising had to be over 50. Watching the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico was a highlight. I always feel happy when I see the water. We had dinner at a restaurant famous for its seafood cocktails (which basically looks like vomit in a glass, no thanks) and coconut shrimp. I don't eat seafood but I ordered the coconut shrimp -- they were huge and delicious (all I could taste was coconut). At ... read more

The 16th of September is when the whole of Mexico celebrates becoming independent (197 years ago in 1810). The towns and cities are decorated with flags and lights, and there are always big parties and celebrations on the night of the 15th. I arrived in a port town called Campeche on the 15th, but was small and pretty but probably wouldn´t have been that exciting if it hadn´t have been Independence day. Everyone went to the main square about 10pm to hear the governor make a speech. Very bizarrely, lots of Mexican families asked to have photos taken with me and my friend! There were camera crews everywhere, lots of dancing, then fireworks and streamers everywhere. At 11.30pm a male singer came on stage who must have been the Mexican equivalent of Robbie Williams, as women ... read more

Campeche Our overnight journey to Campeche was interrupted several times by army patrols boarding and marching swiftly up and down the bus while we all blinked blearily in the unexpected bright lights - not sure what they were checking for but fortunately no one on our bus was it! Arriving safely in Campeche (quite an affluent and stylish town), we headed straight for the sea front and fresh sea breeze. Though slightly less humid than Palenque, Campeche was still really warm with the hoped for sea breeze doing little to alleviate the heat...or the mozzies (from Palenque onwards Kate proved to be popular dining for the local mosquitoes). Overall our hostel was good (kitchen/laundry facilities, free breakfast, internet, balcony view over the Zocalo) but Room 0 with only a small high window did a good impression ... read more
