The 16th of September is when the whole of Mexico celebrates becoming independent (197 years ago in 1810). The towns and cities are decorated with flags and lights, and there are always big parties and celebrations on the night of the 15th.

I arrived in a port town called Campeche on the 15th, but was small and pretty but probably wouldn´t have been that exciting if it hadn´t have been Independence day.

Everyone went to the main square about 10pm to hear the governor make a speech. Very bizarrely, lots of Mexican families asked to have photos taken with me and my friend! There were camera crews everywhere, lots of dancing, then fireworks and streamers everywhere.

At 11.30pm a male singer came on stage who must have been the Mexican equivalent of Robbie Williams, as women of all ages became hysterical and started singing along with soppy grins on their faces!

The next morning, there was a huge parade through the town. I´m really glad that I saw it all!
