Pearson Int'l (YYZ) Toronto, CANADA 1 July 2004 (Canada Day) Our gateway out of Canada. Check In Checked my bag and managed not to give sarcastic answers to the check-in girl. "Did you pack these bags yourself?" -No, a middle-eastern guy did. Funny he knew exactly what to bring... Departures Saying goodbye to my family was painless and surprisingly devoid of saddness. I wondered if I was dead inside but soon enough I had to pass security. I think I was the only one not patted down - maybe you had to pay extra for that. If we were hoping for a good omen (which is unlikely) we'd have been dissapointed by the diabotical thunderstorm. Aparently flying a giant metal plane through lightning doesn't deter the budget airlines from timely arrivals becuase there was no delay. ... read more

This is again more north than the other Toronto Entries but is a main intersection on the TTC subway lines. East-West and North-South Lines intersect. I mention it as there was a tragic accident here last week an old cinema, the "Uptown" was being demolished and debris fell on a nearby ESL (English as a Second Language) school injuring many and killing one. The one that died was a man from Costa Rica just finished emailing family back home when it happened. It turned out he was a hero as he sheilded a 10 year old boy and saved him. They had live images running for days after of bulldozers clearing away the rest of the rubble, similar to the images from ground zero. I've been there last februrary when they were still clearing this was ... read more

This is much further north than the other entries (Eglington Stop on the TTC Northbound subway line) but thought I would mention it for the following: Yesterday I was on the subway and noticed a small sign in the carriage with part of the London Tube system. It was an ad for a new online travel website. I thought it was interesting as I've been on the Tube many times, and brought back some memories. As I passed Eglington today (not as far there yesterday) on the subway there were all these signs saying "underground" with the red cicle and blue rectangle and for a few seconds I thought I was on the Tube or that TTC had been bought by them. Then I remembered the ad from the day before they had filled up most ... read more

(Lat: 43.639/Long -79.393) To the NE is the famous SkyDome and CN Tower lots of info on those in all the guides. I was downtown early 90s when Carter hit the winning home run that gave the BlueJays baseball team their second world series win in a row two years running. I was not in the Dome but you could hear the cheers from miles away, everyone was honking horns, was an amazing time. However what might not be in the guide and is probably only temporary is the Presentation Centre just west of the Dome. It has a big model of downtown with all the new buildings going up. More for prospective home condo owners but free to go inside, free cookies and coffee, and a portal into the future of what toronto will look ... read more

On the SE side is the Hummingbird Centre which has plays, ballets, concerts etc have seen Riverdance, King and I there. Used to be called the O'Keefe centre. Just to the east of this is the famous Saint Lawrence Market and to north and south of that are two buildings that resemble the "Flatiron" building in NY. The smaller one has a large "window" painted on it. To the NE is a "Shopsys" restaurant specializing in all kinds of hot dogs and to the NW is the Hockey Hall of Fame a main Toronto attraction. It used to be a bank and any book about ghosts in Toronto will tell the tale of a teller named Dorothy who is said to haunt there. Just beside it west is a stylish restaurant called Agcua. To the SW ... read more

To the NW is the Air Canada Centre (ACC) home of the Toronto Raptors Basketball team and hosts concerts like Cher, Rolling Stones, Prince etc, ice hockey (Maple Laafs), and other events that the Skydome to the west is too big for. The facade of the building is a historical art deco old post office that was kept but everything else is brand new. Look at the wonderful releifs carved in the stone of various scenes. If you are lucky enough to watch an event from one of the corporate boxes at the top you get all you can eat and drink served by dedicated wait staff. To the north east and south east, south west are parking lots but new condos are going up there. Above is the Gardiner expressway there is talk of putting ... read more

The foot of Toronto and the end of the longest road in North America. In fact on the sidewalk just SE gives distances to towns near and far and more info on Yonge (loops right around to Thunder Bay). Just south of this is Captain John's restaurant on a converted fishing vessel. Street musicians sometimes play here. Tall ships also go on lake cruises from the docks SE at the foot of the parking lots. Just SW is the Westin Harbour castle hotel (see BayAndQueensQuayWest) also a high speed ferry that goes to St. Catherines near Niagara-on-the-lake and the US side of Lake Ontario). NE is the Toronto Star building (Hemmingway used to work at the Star but it was on King's street in those days. They sent him all over the world which allowed him ... read more

To NE is the famous Royal York Hotel where the queen stays. In the overpass there are pictures depicting Toronto in the early 1900s and in modern times (1989).
