As I write this I’m sitting in the Maple Leaf Lounge at Toronto Pearson International Airport waiting to board Air Canada flight 856, and due to land at London Heathrow around 08:35 tomorrow. It was strange saying goodbye to Susan, Sarah, Victoria, Sadie and Cash – I’ll miss them all! As I'm sure you can imagine, yesterday was a quiet day. We spend most of it just chilling at Susan’s home in Cambridge, but we did pop out to meet Lyn and her grandson, Joe-Joe, for a walk and to grab some caches. It was a hot afternoon, but the walk was very pleasant, it was lovely to see Lyn again, and Joe-Joe is a wonderful smiley baby! I even took a turn at pulling his wagon. As far as I’m aware, we don’t have baby ... read more

Saturday was spent gardening, cleaning and preparing for the Susan’s birthday barbeque. I was given the responsibility of using the Whipper Snipper to cut the edge of the grass. Whipper Snipper is a much better name for a grass trimmer than Strimmer! I was also given the responsibility of loading the charcuterie board and assisting with frying the onions. Susan did so much in the morning that she needed a bit of a nap in the afternoon! It was lovely to meet some more of Susan’s friends, and a very pleasant evening was had by all with plenty of food and drink being consumed. The mossies were out again though! Having started our celebrations quite early, we were tidied up and in bed at a sensible time, however some of the neighbours weren’t, with a party ... read more

Susan’s home town. We walked to Tony’s Diner for breakfast along trail paths lining the edge of creeks (streams) and along sidewalks (pavements) through clean, attractive housing areas where the homes are well spaced out with tidy gardens. Each house is very individual, unlike a lot of areas in the UK where estates are populated with very similar looking houses. There are lots of trees with birds and squirrels. We saw Canadian Robins - bigger and leaner than the small round ones we have in the UK, and their red breasts aren’t as vivid. There are grey squirrels like in the UK, but also black ones. I attempted to get photos of the robins and the black squirrels, but as is often the case when trying to photograph wildlife – in my experience anyway – as ... read more

After a slightly restless night I woke to 3 emails from Air Canada informing me of delays. The most recent one citing a delay of 2 ¼ hours. Ah well, at least I can spend time comfortably in the lounge once I get to the airport. The journey on the Heathrow Hoppa went without any problem, although I did get a slightly later one than I’d planned. I sailed through check-in and security, then stopped briefly to complete a very easy Adventure Lab cache. After a bit of window shopping I walked the 15 or so minutes to the Maple Leaf lounge. Brekkie was yummy, and as I type this I only have another 2 ¾ hours to kill before the gate will be on the departures board. I feel a glass of something might help... ... read more

So I lasted 3 weeks back in the UK before my travel itch got soooooo bad that I set off again. For some crazy reason I decided to go to Canada in the depths of Winter - I flew to Toronto 26th November and ended up staying in Canada until 7th January 2011. My main justification was cheap board at my mate Robbie’s pad in Southern Ontario in return for a bit of cooking, housework and dog minding This ended up including clearing up several tons of dog sick when his lovely black lab Roddy ate something nasty on the farm and his sweet long haired jack russell, Lilly, upchucked in sympathy, but it was still better than working. I am horrendously behind in writing the blogs so this will be briefer than normal and not ... read more

Wednesday we headed off to Niagara Falls, its about an hour from here. The motorway is called the QEW, Theyre widening it though, so that causes a few slow downs along the way. We drove down the main road beside the Falls , through the mist that comes up off the falls. Found a carpark area for $20 / day at the south end. Walked over to the Falls and got wet walking through the mist . At least we were prepared and bought rain coats. From the Welcome centre that is right by the Falls , You just sit there watching the water go over the Falls and are mezmarised by the shear volume of water that flows. We went and got tickets and waited in a reasonably long line to go on the 'Maid of ... read more

Before leaving Canada to see the world, I thought I should tie up some loose ends for those who want to follow along with what I'm doing. Here are some handy websites: For Kiwi Experience - to see what I'll be doing in New Zealand: www.kiwiexperience.com To see what time it is where I am, use the website: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/ -- start with the Australia/Pacific for times in New Zealand. For once (or twice!) in my life I'll always be WAY ahead of everyone else! Anyway, that's all for now... just wanted to give you a heads-up on some of the things i'll be doing oh-so-soon! ... read more

Well... I decided after reading my friend Geoff's AMAZING blog of his time in Japan, that I should get used to using this blog before I actually depart. For those who don't know where I'm going, I'll give you the low down. My dates of travel are Jan 4th-"end of May", which i'm sure you know is coming up very soon. I will soon be knee deep in packing, getting money in various currencies, realizing how little money i have (haha! i'll be fine, really.), and trying to cope with the knowledge that "wow, i'm actually doing this". I'm going it alone, mainly, although my last leg of the trip will be in Kenya and Tanzania where my dear mother plans to join me for two weeks' work in Kisumu AIDS orphanages and two weeks travelling ... read more
