Blogs from Burlington, Ontario, Canada, North America
These countries were hand picked by the both of us. We started off listing places we've always imaged ourselves travelling to...we ended up with a list of over 20 cities (those were only the top picks!). After many parental suggestions, blog creeping and internet surfing it came down to these 9 cities, all of which are going to be conquered in only 1 month. London, Barcelona, Valencia, Ibiza, Cinque-Terre, Rome, Santorini, Berlin and Amsterdam. It took us days to finally set in stone the 9 carefully selected cities, now we had to plan. We had to be realistic, there was no way we were going to be free spirits and hop on a plane, a train or a bus whenever the time felt right, we had 9 cities to get to, explore, and enjoy, there had ... read more
On Wednesday around 3:00 local time our plane from Heathrow arrived in Toronto and our team made it home safe and sound...all but our luggage! Glad it was here that we didn't have our luggage and not in Zambia. I ended up getting my suitcase at 5:00pm on Thursday so it wasn't a huge deal! So to recap our last days in Zambia... On Thursday night we had 2 guests for dinner, the 2 guys from Lifesong came again and it was great spending some more time with them. Friday was our last work day and there was much to do but it would be a short day as another group was going to visit Care and Compassion. Many of us spent our time but a mixture on the lumbar, this mixture was painted on to ... read more
Well it's the day before my big trip and I've been busy packing and making sure it all fits and hopefully I don't go over the 50lb limit. Fortunately we are allowed to take 2 checked bags but since some of the team that already left lost their bags enroute I'm thinking to just check 1 bag and take the 2 carry ons. I've received many well wishes and prayers from many different people about this trip and so thankful for it! This truly is an amazing opportunity and one I thank God for. I'm excited to keep this blog of my travels and trip and hope that I will be able to update it each day with mostly pictures but I will have to see how the technology works over there. Today I'm using my ... read more
Well, I am less than a week away from my furthest destination! It's very exciting thinking about all that is in store for me and the team as we work in Zambia. I finished getting all my shots and have filled the prescriptions that I need to take along. I did some shopping for clothing that is suitable for the climate, culture and that I can leave there. Talize is a great store for that! There are 15 of us on this work trip, 5 are traveling separate than the rest of the team and leaving earlier that us but the 10 of us will be leaving next Monday evening, August 1st. We leave Toronto at 8:40pm and arrive in London (Heathrow) at 8:35 am (local time) it's a 7 hr flight. We will spend the ... read more
Well, now that school is out for the summer, I can focus on my trip to Zambia. So my countdown begins...29 days until we leave. I've got my vaccinations complete (that was over $300) and prescriptions I will need to fill within that next few weeks for Malaria and Typhoid. On July 19th I will go for my 2nd Twinrex shot. Today I bought a great backpack at MEC along with a brimmed hat (this will be a first...I never wear brimmed hats) but since they are recommended I will take one along. At MEC I got all these great ideas for clothing, now I just need to research what is acceptable in Zambia, from what I hear they are a more conservative country so I have to keep that in mind. I still can't believe ... read more
My first blog. Here we go :) Pretty much a month to date before I take off for good ol Europe! Wow. Pretty stoked for everything. Even the preperation for this trip has been fun. I say that only because it seems that everything has fallen into place. Afterall, I have had some time to get things in order! I moved out West after uni to get out and explore a bit, something new. I decided to move back from that because Europe was next on my list and saving up from home made sense. So it's been a year and a half roughly since I've moved back. Since then I have been saving and keeping Europe in the back of my mind. Now I'm finanically confident and Europe is smack frontrow and centre bouncing around ... read more
The City of Burlington resides on the North Side of Lake Ontario with many well developed landscapes & homes that surround the shores of Lake Ontario. If you travel along Lake Shore Road & North Shore Blvd, one will find a vast variety of interesting estates & homes!!! Burlington was at one point known as a vessel destination or a port city. But now the only vessels that venture around the Shores of Burlington are mainly for recreational purposes and all reside out of a small marina located at LaSalle Park in Aldershot. The major landmark for the City of Burlington is the 2.2km long Skyway Bridge, in which separates the Hamilton Harbour/Bay from the rest of Lake Ontario!!! In the forming of the City of Burlington, many settlers arrived as the result of the American ... read more
'Twas the night before 3 Peaks...
Published: January 3rd 2010North America » Canada » Ontario » BurlingtonOne Last Post Before I Hit the Road... I Mean Air...?!?! Today is an exciting, scary, and wonderful day. By this time tomorrow I will be 40,000 above the Atlantic Ocean. Crikey! :) Warm wishes and good lucks keep coming in on facebook. They've been super motivating and a sweet reminder of all of the people behind me on this journey. I said goodbye to my mom and sister yesterday before going to my dad's who will take me to airport Sunday afternoon. My mom was overprotective as always, but I secretly (or not so much now since she may read this!!!) think she is just as excited for me to be on this journey. If anyone asks, she tells people I am staying at the Holiday Inn in Toronto, not on the side of ... read more
Only two more sleeps! Happy 2010! I hope that you had a great holiday and a very happy New Year's Eve! Just putting the finishing touches on my kit - that's all of the stuff that in a few hours will be strategically placed/shoved into my trusty black 80L backpack, thrown over my shoulder, and checked at Pearson to meet me in Nairobi. As you can tell from the pictures - there is no limit to the amount of stuff I am bringing. Yes - some stuff is frivilous... like Cosmo for the plane (don't judge - it will get me through 2 x 8 hour flights with whatever sanity I have left in tact), a bathing suit for the beach post 3 Peaks, etc... But also this pack includes all of the essential items that ... read more
My Generous Supporters at the Brampton Men's Recreational Hockey League!
Published: January 2nd 2010North America » Canada » Ontario » BurlingtonThank You for your remarkable support! When I first found out that I was one of twleve women (out of 50!) to be part of the 3 Peaks 3 Weeks 2010 Team, I ran around the office yelling and screaming out of shear joy! Yes, some people may have thought I was crazy... but a few special people believed in me, knew it was possible, and have supported me throughout this journey. For their hugs, encouragement, dollars, and love - I am so appreciative! You, just as I am, are equally a part of the 3P3W family. I will carry your support along with me in this journey. It will undoubtedly push me to reach deeper inside myself that imagined possible. I would not have been able to reach my fundraising goal without the support of ... read more
