Day 7 First of all Happy Father's Day to all of you dad's out there. Last night was filled with lightning, thunder and heavy rain. I just love the sound of the rain hitting the roof of the RV, it reminds me of my younger years when we stayed at our farm during the summer months. By morning the rain had slowed down considerably and we decided to have a leisurely start to the day. Of course, being it was Father's Day I treated Ray by making one of his favorite breakfasts, eggs and hash. We hit the road around 10, and by then the rain was just a drizzle. The drive was quite uneventful, I'm not sure if I have mentioned this before, but the roads here, except for the major cities are quite uncrowded. ... read more

Alma to Nova Scotia The rain was at it again this morning so we slept in a bit as it was so dark outside. Marg got her shower in first while I went and got a fresh cup of coffee courtesy of the campground. Pennelope is parked at Bay View Campground, one of two spots they have for travelers. The other 6 spots are seasonal so the campers stay there until the middle of October. There is also a 4 room motel and 4 chalets up the hill, they have the bay view. They provided us with firewood if we wanted a fire, cds or vcrs for movies and free coffee, tea or hot chocolate. They are a really nice couple and have a fairly simple operation. Breakfast was at the Octopus Garden (right Marg?) which ... read more

Wow, what a beautiful morning! Jake and I had the first group of Medal Bearers leaving from Sidney. Really fun and lively bunch! After parting from our MB's we headed to Rita MacNeil's Tea House. She was there and actually cleaning tables! If anyone has seen the Trailer Park Boys episode with Rita you would see the humor in that! We had our picture taken with her. Jake sang to her and she cried. Jake can sing well, so it was an emotional cry! When the medal arrived we had the pleasure to hear her sing. She still has a very beautiful voice. We left and headed onto St. Peter's. Not only is this town beautiful, but we got such a warm welcome it was incredible. The town fed us all a fresh lobster and t-bone ... read more

The day started out really well. We awoke much earlier than we have been getting up lately - the not so bright time of 5:30 am. We packed our bags, and Mary very kindly made us a nice breakfast. Eggs, ham, toast, muffins - we were stuffed. We managed to leave by 6:15, which was good because we wanted to make sure to get to the ferry well before its departure time of 8:00, because if we missed that one, we would need to wait until 11:15 for the next one. Normally 1h 45m would be more than enough for us to do our first 25 km, but with the PEI hills, and the wind we've been getting lately, we didn't want to take any chances. As it turned out, it rained all last night, and ... read more

I would say that aptly describes how the East Coast is treating me. My job has become very relaxing after a switch in focus from compiling massive preliminary indexes for a bibliography to a research project. The professor I'm working with is a wonderful man -- he gave me a paper to do on how oil money interacts with the political economy of Equatorial Guinea, which is now the top third oil producing African nation. So needless to say it pertains well to the academic side of next year and is holding my interest! He also needed someone to cat/house sit while he was away and I was the lucky one who got the job! This meant that I got to stay in his quaint house in rural NS, right near the beach, with a car ... read more

What more could you ask for?! That's what I thought. Nada. Welcome one and all to the beginning of my global adventures... for the rest of the summer I will take you into the world of Antigonish in all of it's small town glory. The town has a population of roughly 4,500 and is located 2 hours north of Halifax, about a 10 minute drive in any direction from long stretches of sandy beach opening out onto the Atlantic ocean. Beautiful indeed! The weather finally started to turn this past week and we have been enjoying hot days in the mid 20s with a nice breeze -- none of this muggy Ontario business! With good weather comes the beginning of beach adventures, the most current being my first experience with jellyfish! We couldnt' go swimming ... read more
