Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Woke up early to rain and thunder....able to get back to sleep, thank goodness! Another bright and sunny and hot day today, great day for driving. Started talking to my neighbour and discovered he is from Guelph! Small world. He is still traveling and heading into the states before he heads back to Guelph. Packed up and back on the road. Spent the morning wondering around Saskatoon. Another beautiful city, and very friendly people. Otis and I enjoyed some of the walking trails around the city and the Saskachewan River. Drove off the highway to a small town, with a salt [View Full Entry]

All is well here in on the fringe of the Arctic. We have had our first frost of the season (only 4 weeks since the last frost of spring), so fall is on it's way! However we are experiencing an Indian summer as the temps are now on the rise for the next few days. The good weather has caused a flurry of activity in the Tundra Buggy shop. We can finally do some of our work out side! There are still a lot of bears in the area, in fact there has been sightings of black bears and grizzly bears [View Full Entry]

Great news! Out on the tundra we were amazed when we saw a mum with her three young cubs! It was quite the thrill and it has caused quite the sensation around the world among polar bear experts and enthusiasts alike. It made national news here in Canada and we are all very excited up in Churchill. The threesome were all very chubby and mum looked in real good shape! I hope they make it through the next winter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WTDbzCTDJA (I can't seem to get the link to publish properly? So you'll have to copy and paste it!) Enjoy... Three little bears

Up early and wanted to go for a swim in the Buffalo Pound Lake...except it had green slime on the top...instead went for a hike and a shower before getting on the road and heading into Moose Jaw and taking a tour of the tunnels. Imagine, Moose Jaw in the late 1800's and early 1900's with tunnels beneath the town, with steam furnaces, how they heated the businesses downtown. The tunnels had a Chicago connection with Al Calpone and the Chinese immigrants lived in the tunnels, while working for Burrows and doing laundry. Canadians didn't treat the Chinese with any respect, [View Full Entry]

Greetings fellow Earthlings. Firstly, I'd like to welcome the warmth into Northern Manitoba. Things have finally warmed up a bit, although, as part of a package deal, with the slightest hint of heat - come the mosquitoes, black flies and giant deer flies. Unfortunately, the bugs have not eaten as well as the polar bears, and therefore will take a chuck of flesh out of you the instant you go outside. The flowers are in full bloom right now too! It really is an unbelievable sight - all those colours! The sea ice is still there, but it's just a wee [View Full Entry]

After a very noisy night of trucks going by, releasing their brakes, I got up and started my blogs and got caught up. The morning was bright and sunny and was starting to get warm! Off to Oak Lake to see where my friend, Tannis is from! A very quiet village and not a lot open (the Co-op, bank, post office), so Otis and I walked around and just enjoyed the quietness! Saw the wonderful community garden and the Hardware store/Gallery (no longer open). Tannis's songs came alive for me! Back in the car and headed to Saskatchewan! You can see [View Full Entry]

Seeing it was overcast, when we got up, decided to take the tent down before the rains came. Which we managed to do! Yeah! Managed to get a shower in! My first since leaving Guelph. (Swims are good). Before driving, drove to Thunder Bay lookout and hike along the Piney Woods Hill trail. I wasn't expecting to be at the top and look down! A bit startling, but worth the view. The hike was good to do, before hopping in the car and driving. It started to rain, so a good day for driving. Crossed over to Central Time, and decided [View Full Entry]

Hey guys There has been an unusually high population of bears in the area for the time of year, most mornings I wake to the sound of cracker shells being used to chase them out of town. It's quite exciting! A couple of days ago, out on the tundra, we were treated to a very curious mother bear and her cub. They swam across a lake right up to the buggy and checked us over for 20 minutes or so. They then got right back into the lake and swam to the willows... It was amazing! Dave. [View Full Entry]

Hi Guys. The sea ice has almost all gone! Finally, we have a liquid Hudson Bay, there are still a few lingering chucks floating around, but for the most part it's all water. It has been a very late break-up this year! The polar bears are big and fat after spending more than a month longer than usual hunting on the ice floes, which is great news for the bears. But not so good for us people here. We are wondering if we will get a summer this year? The temperature has still been struggling to reach double digits and it [View Full Entry]
