Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Our last night at Coachella was for me, to be one of getting lots of sleep within an aura of serenity. Unfortunately the rest of the campsite disagreed with my schedule and at about 3am, a rather sizely cluster of people began stomping around the site with drums accenting the two words: "WAKE UP!" To me the idea of screaming those particular words seemed a little redundant seeing as they could have shouted "BIG SLUT!" or any words with two syllables really to accompany their simple drum bashing. I'd have woken up, regardless. After my initial thought: bastards; I remember drifting [View Full Entry]

Holy Moly, when it rains it pours!!!! Lots of people warned me about the boringness of the Prairies and they were right, although the ever changing clouds did provide some (!) entertainment...when we stopped for gas at one point we were told there had been a tornado warning but thankfully no spiral clouds came our way. We made it to Brandon, Manitoba after a long day's drive. Samuel did very well despite developing a cold:-( He was up a few times last night and went through probably half a box of tissues today but he's good and almost off to bed...having [View Full Entry]

Well it looks like we have decided to travel again this year. This time it's going to be for only 3 weeks! Candace and I discussed the idea and both feel that we want to see some more of S.E. Asia. At this point, we figure that we will shoot for February and will make Laos and Cambodia the focus of our travels. Lots of details need to be worked out and I'm also flirting with the idea of going over a week before and doing a dive trip. Candace seems to be warming up to the idea although she does [View Full Entry]

So we are no longer waiting. I (Erin) go to Toronto on Thursday, and was informed that I would be getting my visa that day. That being said we are now packing like crazy. We have booked flights for Sunday, and will leave at 8AM. We are supposed to arrive in Seoul at 3:40 Pm on Monday. In the meantime we have planned a going away party of sorts, and will be going bowling (surprise, surprise) at Academy Lanes on Friday around 8. If you are interested in coming please email and let us know, so we can book the appropriate [View Full Entry]

I guess this can be considered our first entry, although it is not very interesting. We are currently in the thick of waiting and waiting for the consulate in Toronto to process my visa. They are beyond ridiculous to deal with and, to be honest if we were not so invested in the process (ie: sold everything and have no jobs!), I would be tempted to give up. That being said, we are full of mixed emotions these days, as we are in the last couple weeks stretch before we leave, and it is a very bittersweet experience. On one hand, [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Ontario
Welcome to Ontario
We'd better be welcome, because we're there for a long haul!
In July 1996, Eddy and I set out to drive across Canada to Vancouver. Our first hurdle, and I mean that literally, was getting across Ontario! What a huge province! We left on Friday, after work and made it as far as a town called Deep River, on the first night. The following night, we stopped in Thunder Bay, and the night after that, we slept in Sault Ste Marie. FINALLY on the third day, we made it to Winnipeg, Manitoba!!! Now, the scenery in Northern Ontario is mildly interesting. Some sights, such as the giant nickle in Sudbury, or the [View Full Entry]

Aaah, the memories. I lived in the Peg for about 15 years. It is my second home. We are staying with our good friend Moe, the best hostess ever! Thanks Moe! The "essential experientials" I needed to do so far (a nostalgic quest) are: 1) Go into Prairie Sky Book Store on Westminster Ave and smell the air while browsing the new age books and looking at all the pretty imports and semi precious stones. 2) Walk down the block and buy 1/2 dozen cinnamon buns from the Tall Grass Bakery (no preservatives, and whole wheat!--this means they ARE good for [View Full Entry]

Mural at the Forks

Roads today were really nasty and made for slow driving. We encountered a lot of unyielding traffic coming the opposite direction, too, so our travel time was really stretched out. We decided to overnight in Thompson instead of running into overtime pressing on to Gillam. We enjoyed a nice dinner at Grapes, and an evening of arcades at the Ruckers adjoining the hotel. Dance Dance Revolution! [View Full Entry]

Dun dun dun!
Dun dun dun!
The highway from Leaf Rapids to Lynn Lake is an uninterrupted dirt / paved road of twists and turns. And nowhere to stop for bathrooms!
Lynn Lake today! It took us a little longer than we anticipated to get there, so it was tight to start the show on time. Our hosts at the school served us a lovely breakfast treat of bananas, yogurt, and juice. Yum! We’re staying in town tonight, then traveling to Gillam tomorrow. [View Full Entry]
