Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

With only hours to go before we leave "Friendly Manitoba", the weather has turned from the normal minus 20 to 30 degrees to plus 1 degrees and the usual snow fall has turned into a constant drizzle of rain. Well today it changed back to snow and our departure seems once again to be aptly timed. Of course we had the minus 40 degree weather to contend with in January but this foray into South East Asia during the slushy sleety changes in weather is still very welcome. The kids, teary eyed, left with their grandparents, our Chihuahuas in tow as [View Full Entry]

We are one month away from leaving and we have lots of decisions to make however we have agreed on 3 focal points. Our first stop after Bangkok will be the (in)famous Phuket . I always said I did not want to go to Phuket because of the "package" tourist market that is predominantly catered to there. Not that we are backpacking snobs, and feel our trips more "real" as we support locals by spending local or anything like that. Its about not needing all the excess to relax. A lot can be said for simplicity. I don't expect everyone [View Full Entry]

So in less than 48 hours I'll be on the very first plane ride of this trip. I just want to thank everyone who came out last night, it was amazing to see so many people there just for me. I had a great time - despite some goodbye crying - and I hope you all did as well. I'm just about to finish packing. Planning what to take when you're not going for a weekend or a week but rather 5 or 6 months takes a lot of time and effort. Everything has to be multipurpose and nothing can be [View Full Entry]

I'm so antsy I can't sit still. It feels like my stomache is crawling around inside my chest. 6 days away (well, 5 I suppose, it is after midnight!), and it is almost starting to feel like I'm really leaving. Talked to Florian today, and it turns out they will all be in Curitiba, Brazil, not in Sao Paulo as planned. They won't get to Sao Paulo until the 27th, so it looks like I'm taking the bus (10 hours) from Sao Paulo to Curitiba once I land. I'm actually sort of excited about that, kinda weird, I don't know. I [View Full Entry]

The closer my trip gets, the more jittery I am getting. It didn't even seem real until today when Bernhard (the world's awesomest travel agent) called to say my Brazilian visa was there. Considering we were uncertain whether I would be able to get it by next Tuesday when I leave, both surprising news and what should have been a big relief. I've felt 2 things simultaneously since; reassurance that I am supposed to be going on this trip, and utter terror that I actually am going on this trip. All I can think of is Adriano (who isn't scared of [View Full Entry]

What would possess two Australians to spend an Australian summer in a Winnipeg winter? And there starts the conversation with pretty much everyone we encounter in Winnipeg, a city’s whose weather seems to define it and probably for good reason. Winnipeg is the coldest city in the world (with a population greater than 600,000 people). That’s a record that doesn’t seem to appear on too many of the tourist brochures or ‘Highlights of Winnipeg’ lists. In a strange but somewhat logical paradox, Winnipeg is also one of the sunniest cities in Canada, with an aver [View Full Entry]

My wonderful brand new 9 inch laptop died! Specifically the touch pad, which is not surprisingly a very important part of a laptop. I sent it in to be fixed, but between all the holidays I'm not too hopeful about it coming back in time. I was really looking forward to having it with me. Being a pharmacist is pretty awesome. I needed to get some casual work for when I get back, so the conversation went like this: Alison: Hey. Need someone to work between (these specific dates)? Employer: Yup. How many days a week? Alison: 3 or 4 (I [View Full Entry]

It seems that a whole lot of time has slipped away and before we knew it, December had rolled around. A lot of things had happened since we last traveled but we vowed to take another trip this coming year as we both had so much fun traveling together last year. Of course the unimaginable seemed to come up with every week that dragged past. I injured myself while trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, Candace's migraines seemed to intensify and any extra money we seemed to save was paid out for repairs on our cars. Each week, we saw life [View Full Entry]
