Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Day 27: We landed in a hunters’ camp just to the east of Thunder Bay, Ontario, with a room in a dorm-like cabin. Since it was pouring rain and getting dark, we decided to stop at 7:30 p.m. and call it good. We both woke up today to the fact that this is an immensely wide continent and that we have to keep driving to ever get across it. That said, we almost decided to take a day off in Thunder Bay to reward ourselves for such dedicated driving. Lake Superior is aptly named. It seems as big as an ocean [View Full Entry]

I only had a few hours to discover Winnipeg. We arrived late one night and the next day I got up to a sunny morning. I stepped out of the hotel and soon discovered why Winnipeg is known for it's wind. I stood on the kerb to cross the road and literally got blown from one side to the other. Glad at that point I hadn't styled my hair in any particular way as it ended up in a huge beehive in front of my face!!! Indeed, the intersection of Portage and Main, in Winnipeg's downtown core, is known as one [View Full Entry]

Winnipegging Part 2 - 21 August to 31 August 2007 Chela's family keeps a cottage on the shores of Betula Lake in the Whiteshell Provincial Park. So, after sending a resentful Alice the Cat to Grandma's, we packed up the Jeep and headed off to spend a few days lazing by the lake. The day was overcast so after arriving, we went off to see the Nutimik museum. This is basically a small room filled with native animals unfortunate enough to die from a rare condition that turns their insides to stuffing and leaves their corpses frozen in dramatic poses. There [View Full Entry]

Winnipeg - 10 August to 21 August 2007 We've spent the last week and a bit in Winnipeg, adjusting to the time-zone and enjoying the sunny, but mild weather. Chela is very happy to be back in her home away from home with her Grandma and her aunt MJ (yes, that's Mary Jane) and Matthew has now met everyone and is approved of! In our short time here, we've noticed a few things about Winnipeg.Winnipeg is a small, flat city situated in the middle of Canada. It is surrounded by the prairies that stretch through central Canada and the USA and [View Full Entry]

Sydney to Winnipeg - 6 August to 10 August 2007 Oh Canada! After months of planning for it and weeks of getting ready for it; we are finally in Canada, our home and native land (of sorts). Our day of departure began with little sleep and phone calls at three in the morning to discuss what essential items to eliminate from our bulging packs. Before too long, thankfully, we were boarding our plane and preparing for a mammoth flight to Vancouver via Honolulu. The novelty of drinks carts and personal TV screens was enough to keep Matthew occupied for most of [View Full Entry]

Leaving Vancouver at 5:45am.

Start of the Yellowhead Route Another "state" that I had to zoom through was Manitoba on my way to Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies. Yah, I know, they are provinces, there are 11 of them in Canada of varying sizes and populations, just like the USA. But, driving through, it just feels like another state. The highway markers were accompanied by the "Yellowhead Route" sign, and the Manitoba province highways have a bison marker. I have to find out what they mean. I passed through Winnipeg (not very impressive), which reminded me of a small mid-western city. Then, I [View Full Entry]

To Summarize Manitoba, For Us As I did for Saskatchewan, I just want to briefly sum up our feelings about Manitoba & our time spent there. Again, it’s got many beautiful areas, the parks, the hills of the Pembina Valley (south & east of Brandon & south & west of Winnipeg), and I feel badly we weren’t able to check out the lakes & beach areas north of Winnipeg. Perhaps if I’d budgeted my time better it would have been possible - heck it probably would have been easily possible to spend the whole 60 days in Manitoba. But as you [View Full Entry]

Bye Bye, Manitoba Wednesday, 1 August 2007 This morning we departed our little “home” on the lake and headed towards Kenora, Ontario. Our time in Manitoba had come to an end. The road from Inverness Falls to highway 44 at Rennie is quite narrow and twisty, and oh yes, it’s got no shoulders either. So we all drove down to Rennie and I departed on Silver from there. It’s the first time I’d used that bicycle since we switched wheels for the front. The “new” wheel’s the same diameter, 26", and it’s only a smidgen larger, but the trea [View Full Entry]

A walk in the woods Tuesday, 31 July 2007 Yesterday we took a day off, slept in & just pretended we were “on vacation” as are most of the other people we see here. I took Panna for a walk down the road, looking at the cottages that line the shore, some of which are very nice. Later I went with her into the water, trying to get her to swim. She was a bit hesitant at first, but then saw a family of ducks (a mom & older babies), and then it was all I could do to hold her [View Full Entry]
