Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

A guy who was staying at the hostel gave me a lift to Edmonton, which is the capital of Alberta. I spent the weekend here, went to the cinema a couple of times, and attended a concert by virtuoso classical guitarist Remi Boucher, which was pretty amazing. But was aware that I could go to the cinema at home, and wasn't really justifying the trip. This sense of becoming slightly directionless and 'losing my way' became more pronounced as I ventured further east into the prairies. I spent a day in Saskatoon, mostly in an art gallery/museum, since it was free. [View Full Entry]

Saskatoon
Never-ending prairie from bus window

Not content with a 17 hour marathon journey yesterday, and clearly missing Winnipeg airport already, Chris, Ro and I headed back there shortly before 9am on Tuesday in search of a Greyhound. A very friendly and helpful man behind the counter relieved Ro and myself of $52 apiece, in exchange for a 5 hour road trip to Grandview, Manitoba. Five hours sounds like a long time, but when you have years of catching up to do, the time passes very quickly! Undoubtedly we entertained/irritated the entire bus for most of the journey with our various stories. But we were happy and [View Full Entry]

Having arrived from Stockholm on Friday evening I thought I had plenty of time to organise myself for my long-awaited holiday. Not so. I turned up at the Heythorp Street Hotel late on Friday evening, where Sarah had very kindly agreed to put me up at short notice. We spent several hours gossiping before I headed to my own spare room for a kip - a strange feeling but a very comfy bed Saturday was spent rather pleasantly with brunch on the South Bank with Emma, Rosie, Steve, Nat and several thousand children, followed by a desperately needed pampering at the [View Full Entry]

Toronto again

Hi folks! The north wind has been howling for a couple of days now. It is starting to feel like fall, but somehow the temperatures are struggling to get below freezing? Not that I mind, as I have a lot of work to do out on the tundra, I could do with a couple more weeks of warm (Relative for the time of year) weather. Our mobile lodge has been hauled out to the wild and barren, windswept and bleak Polar Bear Point, and we've already had a group of 'campers'. Polar Bears International (PBI) had a group of students staying [View Full Entry]

Oh my! The trip from Winnipeg to Thompson, Manitoba seemed the longest. We left Winnipeg after 1 PM lol Nat had one visit left to do. The trip just seemed endless lol and as usual we got to Thompson late, around 10 PM. We ended having to go to The Mystery Lake Hotel. There were no rooms at the motel next to Nat's mom's and no disability units. There's stairs!! lol Nat had a great visit with her family. We went to a mall for brekky. Nat got two newspapers, one was the Thompson Citizen and she got me a First [View Full Entry]

Hi there blog-meisters! Theresa and I have had a fun week up in Churchill... We dined in Churchill's finest restaurants (all two of them), and took a couple of very colourful and scenic drives along the coast. One highlight was having a polar bear run across the main street in town when we were out walking! Just a nice reminder that you could be killed and eaten at any time by Nanuq!!! I had to fly to Winnipeg for a day to do a work related course, which was fun, except the timing was a little bad. It was right in [View Full Entry]

We got to Winnipeg late LOL As usual. We drove around looking for a motel, as usual lol. We ended up finding The Capri. We had to pay $ 50 deposit because it's a weekly, monthly place and we were only staying 2 days. Nat had a wonderful time visiting family. I found a resturant that served a buffet for lunch, Aalto, it had excellent salads and fruit. So I had soup and salad, with lots of fruit. Nat left early and came back to drive me to a much needed laundry mat!! lol I had to dig out my cleanest [View Full Entry]

Time for an update North America » Canada » Manitoba » Morden
Cause there’s no road that aint a hard road to travel on... The first leg of the trip is complete! I spent two days on the TransCanada and I am now in sunny southern Manitoba. I am sitting at a picnic table in the baking hot sun beside my campervan (home), watching Moxie sleep in the shade and realized I should post an update. The road-trip out here was, to use my most favorite word, fantastic. We had blue skies across three provinces and my van travelled so smoothly both Mox and I thoroughly enjoyed the drive. She fits so perfectly [View Full Entry]

Bears and Caribou. North America » Canada » Manitoba » Churchill
Hi there. The bears have been putting on quite the show in the last few days as we have seen two different bears eating two different caribou carcasses! I am guessing that the wolves killed the caribous as we saw their tracks nearby. As the bears have been picking away at carcasses, I have been picking blueberries and other wild berries. It takes a while to pick any quantity, so its usually just pick 'em and eat 'em as I find them! The last of the flowers have bloomed and most are now gone, the shrubs are turning red and brown [View Full Entry]

Greetings to you all. The Beluga whales have been frolicking in the river mouth for the last couple of months and are now migrating out of the river and out of the Hudson Bay. I think it is time to share with you, some of these magic moments I have spent with these magnificent mammals. From the Zodiac they are wonderful, but from a kayak they are even more amazing. I love when they swim under the kayak and blow bubbles, it can be quite a sensation! Their vocal sounds can be heard easily when the water is calm, and the [View Full Entry]
