Background: A land of vast distances and rich natural resources, Canada became a self-governing dominion in 1867 while retaining ties to the British crown. Economically and technologically the nation has developed in parallel with the US, its neighbor to the south across an unfortified border. Canada's paramount political problem is meeting public demands for quality improvements in health care and education services after a decade of budget cuts. The issue of reconciling Quebec's francophone heritage with the majority anglophone Canadian population has moved to the back burner in recent years; support for separatism abated after the Quebec government's referendum on independence failed to pass in October of 1995.

Brilliant day We had such a brilliant day today at UBC. The day was organised well and we had the chance to visit the Irving k Barber Learning Centre, the Walter Koerner Library and the Special Collections and Archives. On top of that we had discussions about learning spaces, institutional repositories and research support. Highlight of the day: watching the Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) do its thing. Irving k Barber Learning Centre The Irving k Barber Learning Centre was really inspiring. Sharon: This blog entry doesn't really fit in with the rest.... as we haven't been cycling for over THREE days. Our bums are getting lonesome without their trusty bike seats to rest on. We got to my Grandma and Grandpa's house on Vancouver Island on Wednesday in the POURING rain. It rained - and it rained - and it rained - all day long. Turns out our amazing waterproof gear is only water proof in Alberta! To be fair, it did hold up pretty well - but after four or five hours of saturation we were bound to get a bit [View Full Entry]

Library Visit #1 We had a number of interesting talks from VPL staff. In particular a presentation on a Community Led Library initiative to improve social inclusion. There was a lot of interest in this amongst the UK group as it attempts to identify policies and regulations that have been developed to suit the library but result in potential users feeling unwelcome and in some cases too afraid to enter the library. VPL quoted 10million items circulating a year but less than 30% of local community actually using the library service. The other main interest point was the library bui [View Full Entry]

Day 1 of 84 We had a fairly uneventful flight and public bus transfer to our hostel in Downtown Vancouver! I'm referring to our hostel as "Jungle Book" as it seems to have the "bear necessities", but for £40 for a double ensuite it's perfect! The biggest surprise of the day was that Charlies bag weighed less than mine! We managed to go for a pleasant walk along Beach Avenue and found a really good place to eat. "The Fish House" is the best of both worlds Posh & Cheap! £50 total for 3 courses, though think we were somewhat under [View Full Entry]

San Fran times

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver
Last weekend I went to San Francisco for a four day holiday and, of course, a music festival. Of all the US cities, SF and NY are the only ones that have ever had any great appeal for my, NY I totally loved on my trip four years ago (almost to the day!) and so can’t wait to return for Xmas this year and although SF wasn’t the alternative/hippie loveland I thought it would be (the city is too big a city for that) I still had a great time. I arrived early Saturday morning (after leaving Vancouver the night before [View Full Entry]

After leaving San Fran we arrivied in Vancouver and one of the best summer days we've had on the trip. The weather was great and all the locals were out and about...especially roller bladers (aparently no one told them it wasn't the 90's anymore...i guess it's linked to the ice hockey). Vancouver was another really cool city, it's surrounded by mountains and sits on the shore of an inlet and river. We only had a night here before hitting the road for Jasper so went on about a 7hr walk through the city, up the observation tower and down to Stanley [View Full Entry]

Well, we leave tomorrow at 12:45. We will have physically departed Canadian soil. The past two weeks have been pretty crazy, what with trying to get everything ready and organized. I've been having the constant case of the butterflies for the past two days. I swear they won't go away. I'm really excited to go but i'm also apprehensive to leave because i have never been away from home for such a long period of time. However, i'm definitely ready for that "flighty temptress adventure", and i can't wait to show everyone all the cool stuff i'll see in Japan. [View Full Entry]
