Today was the first opportunity to actually sleep in. We didn't have to get up and get on the road to the next destination, we were already there. It was pretty nice. When Mike returned from taking Charlie on his morning walk he told me the sun was actually normal looking. It wasn't a fuzzy orange orb in the sky. The smoke had cleared somewhat and you could almost see a few patches of blue if you squinted hard enough and used a little imagination. By the time I dragged myself out of bed, everything was as it was the last time I'd looked up. Mike and Dave went to the park's restaurant for breakfast. Teri and I were invited, but turned it down and opted for a more gradual start to the day. According to ... read more

The Water Doesn't Look Too Bad From Up Here

It was a drizzly morning. Not enough to make packing up miserable, just enough to let you know it was there. As I said in yesterday's post, Mike and I went to the on-site restaurant for dinner. The dining area had a high curved ceiling. At about the height a regular ceiling would have been built, there was a wide wooden shelf that ran on three sides of the room. Now on this shelf there was some greenery; some bushy greenery, some viney greenery. The greenery on the shelf, and the shelf on the wall and the walls there in the dining area-o. Oops, sorry. So among the plastic pine boughs and fake trees were several taxidermied animals posed to attack, alert or flee. It was a little too dark in there last night to take ... read more

Sleep was much more comfortable last night. I remembered to turn the electric mattress pad on and it didn't get as cold overnight as it did the night before. We were up and on the road by 8:30. On our way through downtown Chetwynd we passed the many chainsaw carvings Dave had added to the list of possible things to see and do nearly a year ago when we began our planning meetings. As we drove by them I wished we had made an attempt to drive in to look at them properly. They're very impressive. But when you're up early and traveling 350 - 400 miles a day you don't really have the energy to do much more than set up camp, eat dinner and relax before going to bed and doing it all over ... read more

The Building of the Alaska Highway

North America » Canada » British Columbia July 8th 2023

After a chilly night we woke early to get started on the longest leg of our trip. After a quick breakfast, we broke camp and continued east. I know, you're thinking, "But Alaska is northwest." We're heading over the Canadian Rocky Mountains to the official starting point of the Alcan Highway located in Dawson Creek, BC. We took the lead again to start the leg and an hour down the road I realized I'd left my phone in the trailer. We were now relying solely on Mike's phone for communication as well as navigation. This is not good because his phone has been having issues connecting to the internet and we kinda need that to help us get from here to there. All was going smoothly for about half an hour when I screwed up while ... read more

We met up with our friends, Teri and Dave, at the rest area just north of us ON TIME!! It's nice to know it can actually happen now and then. Mike and I led the way to the border crossing at Sumas, WA. Crossing was quick and easy. We handed the agent our identifications and he asked us if our dog, Charlie, is current on his Rabies vaccination. He didn't even ask to see the certificate, he just took our word for it. He then asked us a series of questions about what we may or may not have in our possession: alcohol, cannabis products, firearms, knives, more than $10,000 CAD or $7,500 USD, all of which we answered "No," UNTIL he asked if we had any fruits and vegetables. "Yes, we have fruits and vegetables, ... read more

After returning from La Paz, Mexico, Leslie and I made a brief stop in Golden followed by a brief stop in Vernon to repack suitcases with foul weather sailing gear before heading to Sidney for 2 weeks of sailing on the west coast; a week sailing around Salt Spring in the Canadian Gulf Islands followed by one week in the San Juans Islands, USA. Ladysmith and Butchart gardens were highlights in the Gulf Islands. The Ladysmith Maritime Society marina is home to the largest Purple Martin colony in BC. After spending the winter in Brazil, the Blue Martins had returned to Ladysmith for the season. Purple Martins were first observed nesting there in 1989. Several nest boxes were installed in 1990. By 2002, there were 75 nest boxes and 35 pairs nested that summer and produced ... read more

Sunday 7thMay 2023 SEATTLE We arrived in Seattle about 7.00am – very easy transfer, by taxi ($20.00 flat fee!!) to our hotel and we started exploring about 8.00am!! Of course, everything was shut, but we did manage to find our way to the Space Needle, which was about 10minute walk, and the Space Needle opened at 9.00am!! We weren’t quite their first customer but after a ‘different’ ride on a lift, on the OUTSIDE of the tower were treated to some wonderful views of Seattle and the Bay in glorious sunshine! Had a very short zoom meeting with Chris family from the top as well!! Looked at then revolving glass floor on the way down- Chris walked on it, I didn’t!! Wandered through the huge Park and then walked down to the waterfront and watch two ... read more

Spring Break I am 41 years old and Spring Break has NEVER been a thing for me... until now. Growing up, I don't remember any big trips over spring break. This was always a week to clean the house or pick up extra shifts at work. Likewise, in college, I was always working on that 1-2 week break in late March or early April. I don't actually remember any spring break vacations in my life. (Maybe one to Vegas when I was really young? I'm not sure, you'd have to ask my mother.) But, now that I have two boys in grade school and a wife who's returned to college, Spring Break has become a thing in my home. Too bad their respective spring breaks don't overlap though. Chelly's spring break was the last two weeks ... read more

“There ain’t no journey that don’t change you some.” - David Mitchell And what a journey we had! We’ve been home for several days now, and I’m rested enough to do my wrap-up blog. We covered a lot of ground over our month long trip, had lots of great experiences, drank lots (beer, wine, spritzes), ate lots (grilled fish, pasta, pizza, gelato), and walked about a million steps, up hills and down hills, up stairs and down stairs 😂. If you‘re thinking of visiting Croatia (which I highly recommend), be prepared for lots and lots of stairs! We travelled in a wide variety of transport on this trip (plane, train, subway, bus, mini van, and a variety of boats), which was lots of fun. We took numerous ferries in Croatia and they were a great way ... read more

“It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression, 'As pretty as an airport.’” - Douglas Adams And we’ve spend quite a bit of time in airports the last two days! If you read my last blog, you know we were concerned about making our standby flight from Rome to Vancouver. Spoiler alert, we missed it 😢. But, first things first, back to our last morning in Rome. The morning started with an email from WestJet saying our flight to Rome was delayed (an hour or so). We weren’t concerned about that, since there were several flights from Calgary to Vancouver we could take (we had to connect in Calgary). As long as we made the flight from Rome to Calgary, we’d be fine. We were up, showered, breakfasted, ... read more
