Well I am in vancouver fitting in as much as possible to my surroundings. I think I have done ok, ill Let you judge for yourselves. Vancouver is an amazing city. I think it must be the only place in the world where you can sail, play golf and ski all in the same day. Its a shame im rubbish at all of them but i will try and learn. The city is massive with the mountains surrounding it and the sea hosting some pretty expensive harbours. People definately try and live the high life with nearly all cars being porshe or ferarri. The 1st week here has really been taken up with being reunited with old friends from Australia and the people with the funny accents (us) being shown off to parents which was quite ... read more

The train ride from Jasper to Vancouver was fairly uneventful - snoring paranoia and a noisey stop at Kamloops meant that neither of us got much sleep! Our chosen hostel in Vancouver was the Cambie International, which we were lucky to get as it was labour day weekend (bank holiday). Thanks to Kris, our local Vancouver tour guide, for this tip. Slight panic on our arrival though as our double bunk already appeared to have a resident! Had we only booked a single bed?!! Luckily no, we'd been given the wrong keys and our actual room was a nice private room. Sleep at last! After checking in we spent the rest of the day walking the 10km Sea Wall of Vancouver, taking in Stanley Park and Granville Island Market en route. We decided to treat ourselves ... read more

... read more

After finishing up our trip in Alaska, it was time to get settled in Vancouver. The attached photos show the house and neighbourhood that we will call home for the next 12 months or so. The August weather has been awesome and we have seen virtually no rain for which this city is famous. We shared a couple of weeks here with Stu and Fee. When they arrived from the Rocky Mountains, they gave us the fantastic news that they were engaged! We celebrated with a trip to Vancouver Island... not to mention a few beers. The relaxing life will be ending shortly, as GT and I have both found work in the taxation team of a funeral services company. Death and taxes... the only two certainties in life. Stay tuned for more photos and stories, ... read more

The first 2 weeks were spent in Vancouver, staying at Becky, Pete and Escher's house. My time here involved either hiking one of the nearby snow capped mountains, jogging, kayaking at the "beach" or nearby cove (not like an Australian beach), swimming in the outdoor 130m pool (right on the beach), riding Holly's fab orange old moutain bike around Vancouver (complete with snow boarding helmet). ... read more

We were pleasantly surprised the accomodation in downtown Vancouver - Pender Lodge - basic, cheap yet clean, safe and a few minutes walk out of chinatown despite being situated on the wrong side of Pender street. As we were told, the East is the poorer side of town. Evident with the open drug dealing and taking - surprisingly a real problem here in vancouver. Denise who runs the place and bubbly and funny! We wasted no time and went walking along the North shore of downtown in an attempt to stay awake during what was still the Malaysian night for us. So tired la! It was so stark the transition from open hard drug taking on the streets around Chinatown versus the upmarket condos and classy yachts on the North shore. Christchurch to Auckland A lovely short flight that went very fast. Beautiful views over the Marlborough Sounds. Was served a scrumptious cookie that curbed my appetite... Auckland to L.A I didn't have to collect my luggage here as it was tagged to go all the way to L.A. This gave me some time to have a little browse at the shops. I decided to by some moisturisers in a beauty salon that was there as I'd already gone through security and thought it would be okay to take on board. I then found out that this was not the case at the second security point. I put all my belongings through the x-ray machine, padded down and scanned with a hand-held metal detector, then was called over by a big scary security guard. He told me ... read more

Day 38..... We spent our first full day in Vancouver stolling Robson street(the main shopping area) and the Waterfront, which is home to a stunning harbour. The sprawl of the city is surrounded by mountains and whichever way you look there is a view to behold - well almost! On our first night we managed to end up wandering into the 'dodgy' part of Vancouver: East Hastings Street! It was exactly what you'd expect to see in a Hollywood crime movie! Still, it was only a swift sprint to re-trace our steps and we were back on track for the evening! Having been in the countryside for a month, adapting to city life was a little difficult at first. To ease ourselves back in, we spent our next day in the Vancouver Aquarium in beautiful Stanley ... read more

Yes, we finally made it. Chubs and Greyhead have moved from the sofa and left the shores of England and arrived in Chubs' beautiful country of birth, sunny Canada. It was a bit of a nightmare going through Heathrow, by the time we got checked in we had about 10 minutes to shop but Greyhead decided a poo was more important! The 9 hour flight was not too bad, obviously I kept elbowing Steve when he dropped off because I couldn't sleep :) Arrived about 3 o'clock Vancouver time and spent our first night in the Ramada Inn, not exactly a backpacking experience but don't worry we're booked into a proper hostel tonight until Fri so hopefully my snoring won't be as bad as last night or 'll be sleeping on the pavement. We went straight ... read more

We arrived in Vancouver at around 4-30 pm on the 10th August. We were supposed to be staying with Heather, a girl we met back in Mendoza in Argentina. I tried to ring her cell phone but got no answer, so guessed she must still be at work. So instead we went to a bar for a beer. Later we got through and met her at the flat. The place we were staying was owned by Heather's nextdoor neighbours from 'back home' in Victoria on Vancouver Island and their son, Angus, was staying there. It was only a one bed flat and now there were four sleeping in there! Angus was going away for the weekend though so that worked out quite well for us! The first day we walked around the city to familairise ourselves ... read more
