Sunday July 14 Relax day breakfast at the Wooden Shoe and shopping We woke up around 11 o clock and got dressed ready for a last day shopping, but first we would eat brunch at Kyle´s favorite spot in Vancouver. A small and cozy family Deutsch restaurant. We drove there because we needed to buy some heavy things and needed a big trunk to put them in. We got to the restaurant and to my surprised it was very small and cozy. It is called The Wooden Shoe and is all decorated with Deutsch pictures, flags, and lots of Deutsch wooden shoes along with photos of happy customers. Kyle told me he has been going to that place since he was a fetus in his mom´s belly and longer than any of the young waitresses and ... read more

Friday July 12 Bike ride back to ferry from Victoria to Vancouver We woke up at 5 o ´clock in the morning packed our bags and left for the ferry. The first part of the bike ride was downhill so it was easy. The rest was the same as the ride to Victoria, however I was tired and sleepy and well lets face it bike seats are not truly comfortable- I had set a goal to keep up my pace and improved so I was going a bit faster and with more strength. We reached the ferry at 7 15 (2 hours ride, 1 hour less than the way to Victoria. We parked our bikes and went in the ferry to have breakfast. The ferry ride was quiet and we slept most of the way. When ... read more

July 2 Flight DLC to Incheon to Vancouver Finally the day has arrived, I am going to Canada with Kyle! After a busy day souveniers shopping for Kyle´s family at the Korean market in Dalian, a massage, a mani & pedi and a last Chinese dinner and getting soaked in the rain we were ready to go o Canada. We woke up around 6 am, had a shower and the last cereal breakfast (nothing more on the fridge) and were ready to go. I took the Qing Guai (light rail) to Kaifaqu to get my suitcase and pack some extra stuff we had bought while Kyle finished packing his suitcase. He would take the school bus to the airport while I would take the light rail. It was a rainy morning and it took me awhile ... read more

So it's been a year to the day (yesterday) since we left home. We have fallen into that awful awful vicious cycle of full-time work and routine, which we so desperately sought to leave behind in Australia. Wake up, shower, deal with public transport, work, eat packed lunch, deal with public transport, cook dinner, go for a run/swim, pack lunch for tomorrow, lights out. Five days a week (well 4 for me at the moment, because our company has cut our hours for the months of February and March in order to 'save money'). It was nice having a routine after having a complete lack thereof during the time we were traveling, but the novelty of it wore off after about...a week. Whilst I've worked full-time hours since around the age of 19, I've always had ... read more

So it's been six months since we've officially become temporary residents of Canada! And it has been a pretty rough but exciting ride so far. Since our last post, we have gotten new (real) jobs in offices that pay reasonably well (at least, better than the $9/hr we were getting in our shit-kicking jobs!), moved apartments and are now living in Vancouver West about 10 minutes from downtown, said hello and goodbye to some very good friends from Australia (Rohan, Jodie, Christie, Joel, Simon, Emma and soon goodbye to Kyle) and been through the craziness that is Christmas and New Year celebrations. We haven't left the province yet (although Aaron did just fly down to LA with Kyle for the weekend) and we have much unchartered territory to explore, but it has taken us quite a ... read more

Saturday night we all headed to a restaurant overlooking the water on Granville Island called Sandbar. There was quite a group of us—A. and L., L’s brother-in-law and his partner, a few of A’s friends. But I didn’t feel at all like the odd person out—they were all incredibly friendly and fun to be around. I only ordered a few tapas, but the food was delicious. We ended up inching our way onto a table in the upstairs bar occupied by three guys because the wait for a table on the patio was a good two hours. One of the guys had a coffee shop and was French Canadian. The second was Dutch and worked on a cruise ship. The third one was from Ft. Lauderdale and did IT work for the same cruise company. They ... read more

My time in Vancouver so far has felt very much like a relaxed episode of Sex and the City. L. and I spent yesterday morning getting massages that A. treated us to while she ran errands. Then we shopped at little boutiques and vintage stores. My massage was given by a Chinese woman. She worked her butt off trying to get my shoulders, neck and back to relax and kept asking if she was hurting me because she was putting so much pressure on them. Today I’m so sore I feel as if I spent yesterday doing a major upper body workout. But it’s one of those “hurts so good” feelings. I clearly carry my stress in my neck and shoulders. And after the last couple of weeks I had at work, those muscles were pretty ... read more

Our Safetypants advisor, who remains unnamed, has encouraged us to come up with a few simple travel rules that are designed to set others at ease as to our whereabouts at any given time and facilitate efficient searching in the event of an emergency: 1) Thou shalt not stray from THE LIST 2) Thou shalt not backtrack 3) Thou shalt update thine blog weekly In Translation: 1) We will not be traveling in any other country except that which is on our list. The list being (In rough order): Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina) 2) We will not backtrack to any place we have already been. This goes for both cities and Countries. Once we have left a city or country, we will not be returning to that city/country. The exception to this, of course, ... read more
