So I am skipping a few days out of our trip because I didn't bring the right memory cards for pictures, but I will make another entry on them out of sequence because it really was a fantastic place! After departing Lisbon and our traveling mates, we headed up the coast and spent two nights in Peniche and one night in Obidos (to follow) then off to the university town of Coimbra. The university is the main 'industry' there and the whole city seems to revolve around it. It has been around since the 11th century and has a very prestigious reputation and long list of famous scholars. We booked in at the Hotel Oslo and got a bit of a deal with some fancy negotiating---We were parked out front and someone pulled up behind me ... read more

Congratulations to a very good friend of the Latcar's, and this blog, Dan Huang Taylor, who completed his first marathon! 26 miles of good times we are sure. Anyway, if you recognize Dan on the street from this photo, please give him a hearty handshake. Just don't squeeze too hard--His bones are quite brittle still. Way to go homie! So we arrived back safely in Seville after Fes and jumped in the car to head for Salema, our next stop, in Portugal. Salema was... a disappointment to say the least. The accommodation we booked turned out to be a huge letdown. Not only was the woman we had to deal, Fatima, a nightmare- -we called her an hour before we were to arrive only to be told to call her in a half hour, at which time she told us she was now in another town completely in the opposite direction and got mad and huffy with us that we had made good time on the road, then told us to find someone else to let us into our place in Salema, then disappeared for hours, then got annoyed when we couldn't find her, etc. ... read more

After a pleasant flight from Seville to Fes, we found ourselves in the oldest and largest pedestrian-only city in the world, referred to as “the Medina” in old Fes. Our place was a renovated home, named a “dar,” which we rented for our stay and had completely to ourselves. It was several levels built around an open living area/ small courtyard, and had a lovely rooftop patio. A true gem of a place, and looked after by a very kind woman who basically did everything- cooked, cleaned, painted henna, took us to the hammam, etc. and all with a smile. After settling in at our place (which I must say I was really surprised was so nice considering the conditions in the Medina that we saw on our walk there), we spent the next three days ... read more

Hi All, First a question…Do the posted speeds on the highways in Europe actually mean the maximum speed or is it just a recommendation? The drivers of Portugal and Spain do not really use them for either it seems. We picked up Trevor and Claudia from the airport in Lisbon and headed out on the toll highway, over the Vasco de Gamo floating bridge. It was kind of like Kelowna’s floating bridge, except it was about 4km long and architecturally wonderful. The toll road was set up great for gas stations, because you can’t get off of them without paying your toll—you pay at the end based on the distance traveled. You just scoot off the highway, grab some disgusting pear juice (bad choice!), have a pee, and are back on your way. We filled up ... read more

Hello. Heather here. Colin mostly wrote our posts last trip so I am going to try and contribute more this time. The rest of our time in New York was wonderful. I was so happy to show Colin around after being in the city by myself three times. On our second day we walked through Greenwich Village and the West Village and wandered the old narrow streets and alleys. We came across a bakery that is apparently famous for its cupcakes and for being on Sex and the City. We realized it was a tourist attraction after we came out and crossed the street into a park and looked around to see at least a hundred people eating cupcakes. We walked the new High Line to Chelsea afterward- very cool concept. For those of you who ... read more

I can't believe it took me this long to come here! What a fan-freakin'tastic place! We got in from our piece of crap Continental Airlines red-eye from Seattle to Newark at 630 EST and proceeded to miss our first train into the city. A word on New Jersey--it is one of the ugliest, dirtiest, depressing, decrepit, festering places I have ever been. It literally is a swamp filled with garbage. If I had more wits about me I could have tried for a picture. Sorry friends, I may try and revolt you on our way out of town. We hit Penn Station after the train and got on the subway to head to the upper west side. The thing I really liked was the sound--just like the movies. We got off the subway and one of ... read more

Traveling is fun. Packing sucks. At least it's raining out and we don't feel too bad. Booked our quickshuttle bus to Seattle today. Apparently they have free wi-fi on the bus. I asked and they said it didn't cost a thing. I am wary of false free wi-fi promises. This is mostly a test to see if the new trip settings are working. Later, CC and HL!... read more
