Day 49. 13,737Km I was'nt far from Lone Butte before I spotted the mountains again. Big mountains. The Rockies again. The trip across Hwy 24 does'nt take too long. It's less than 100Km. Once you turn North on Hwy 5 the GPS says the next turn is in 349Km. I fueled up in Clearwater, a town I've looked at on the MLS site before but after having seen it there are lots of nicer places. I'm cruising along Hwy 5 and there is a turnout for a info board and washrooms. As I'm passing buy I look over and notice a car parked watching two bears so I turned around a couple K further down the road and went back not knowing if they would still be there or not. Sure enough they are laying on ... read more

Yes, Warden Wendy...that's the "official" name of a woman park ranger here in Canada! And with a name like Wendy, how can you go wrong? Granted I have just a wee bit of a bias!! But in my humble opinion Warden Wayne and Wendy sound a lot better to me than Ranger Rick and Rhoda! But enough about Warden Wendy, the excitement of the day was seeing a BLACK BEAR!!! Along our travels from Banff en route to Jasper, in the Jasper National Park, we were ever-so-fortunate to see a BLACK BEAR! Granted, the furry creature only looks like a dot in my photos, but I have proof of the fuzzy guy! Sooooooo cool to see wildlife in their native environment!!! And in addition to the bear, today I also saw mountain goats with their babies, ... read more

We took a bus tour from Banff back to Jasper today. On the way back we stopped to pick people up at Lake Louise and had the chance to take a clearer picture of the glacier and lake. From here we stopped to see the Peyto glacier, many mountains and waterfalls. We were lucky enough to see three more black bear during the journey just walking along eating dandelions and turning rocks looking for food at different spots along the road. The second one looked up at us in the bus and then crossed the road. About half way to Jasper we stopped at the Columbia Icefield and took a special bus up the glacier. There are 23 of these buses - 22 here and 1 at the Arctic used by the US to transport staff ... read more

We were out of luck during our stay in Jasper, as there was either heavy cloud or rain for the most part of our time there. We had some good fortune on our full day when we hired a car though, as the morning remained relatively clear. We drove up the Maligne Valley to its canyon and lake, enjoying the spectacle of its river gushing though a very narrow gorge. Also spotted about four black bears along the way, along with about 10 -20 cars on each occasion, pulling over to look from a (usally) safe distance. Alas there were no caribou or other deer sightings, despite the ample signage. In the afternoon we drove to Mount Edith Cavell, where Darren managed a walk to photograph the spectacular Angel Glacier, perched high on Edith's belly. Unfortunately ... read more

June 20th The ferry docked at Prince Rupert just shortly after 5 AM. Once we were let down to the vehicle deck, we needed to repack our bikes and unfastened them, all this while cars, RV's and truck drove by while the ship began to unload. The motorcycles basically left the ferry last. As soon as I drove up the ramp I could see the customs plaza and the lineup of vehicles waiting ahead of us. Just to make it interesting, it was also raining. The whole customs process took roughly a half hour, 29 mins of which were spent waiting in line. Once clear, we headed for downtown Prince Rupert to find a service station, Pat's rear tire needed air. Once that was taken care of, we hit the Yellowhead highway headed east. It rained ... read more

I was ignorant of Jasper National Park before this trip and really hadn't put it on my intinerary. But, thanks to Zoe, Simon & Rob for telling me I had to go. More mindblowing places. Driving through I just kept telling myself, "It never ends." Meaning the absolutely spectacular scenery. Quite a few people have told me that the Canadian Rockies were probably even more spectacular than the Rockies in the US and I always thought that they had to be wrong. Well, I haven't seen all of the US Rockies but they may be right. You drive for over 200 miles and every mile is astounding. There are beaucoup glaciers everywhere in the huge mountains. I could have taken a thousand pictures. (And almost did). By the way, great weather again. Fair and 60's. I ... read more

The road from Banff to Jasper - My god. It was breathtaking - even more than Banff! Nicest drive I have ever done by a mile - and I dont think I will be topping it any time soon! Along the way we stopped at Lake Louise - another scenic lake beautiful - which was frozen over and walked across a bitof it - kinda scary! Stopped at the Columbian Icefields as well, where there is a lake which is Frozen all year round. With a glacier in front of it. We had to make our own trail up to it as it was covered in snow and making our own trail cold of gone pretty wrong as there was a river there which was also covered in snow....luckily enough we spotted the bridge before makingthe ... read more

We left the cozy atmosphere of Rick and Sharons and headed for the rockies. It was Monday morning and the traffic was a little busy getting out of the city but within 30 minutes we were enjoying some pretty stunning scenery. We had a lot of miles to cover and we made good time to the town of Kamloops which we hit around midday. Stopping for a burger and drink we were back on the road again within 30 minutes. Taking a bit of a slower pace now we had some miles under our belt we enjoyed the views of the surrounding mountains lined with trees. We saw a sign for a waterfall off the road so we pulled over to see if was worth a visit. Deciding it was we paid our entrance fee and ... read more
