Trick of the light - Matt Corby It will happen. It happens to the best of us. Side-stepping. Doubting. Looking back. Did I head the wrong way? Why is my mind filled with regrets? Because I remember and my hurts come from the comparison. But there are many sides to a memory; in a weird way I am better than ever. At least three times in a sedentary year will I retrospect and try to recenter. Because I loose my grip too easily, I’m emotionally clustered, I go blurry. Good thing I write, better thing I have fully lived. I have seen the maritimes and the North-West of the states. Bike through two countries and camped in all kinds of weather. Crossed the Continental Divide five times and witnessed the midnight sun. I have connected, loved ... read more

Hello my friends, I am happy to announce my arrival in Canada. This morning I landed at the Calgary International Airport. Upon my arrival I was taken to my friend's house, who willingly lodged me for a week. On the road I could see magnificent landscapes, mountains, forests, wild animals such as bear and caribou. Canada has a real ecosystem that the people want to protect. Indeed, I could see animal bridges to avoid accidents with animals and I find this design very important to protect animals. When I arrived at my friend John's, I was happy to see him again, we talked a lot and told him that he was fighting ecological damage, for his garden, he uses no chemical fertilizers but only nature fertilizers. He also told me that he hunted a maximum of ... read more

Woke early at 6 AM to another beautiful day although temperature is 28°, expected to warm up later today. Both Al and Tom move their RVs to new space at Tunnel Mountain to join Dorrie and I at a primo side overlooking the Canadian Rockies. Great to have breakfast overlooking such a beautiful scene. Plan "A" for the day had Al chauffeuring us all into Banff in his RV and we left at 8:30 to park in Banff at the train station. Arrived just in time to catch one of the first shuttle buses to Lake Louise. Our ride from Banff to Lake Louise through scenic Valley in between mountain ranges. Tom and I both have Gypsy apps for this part of the route. Great to have someone describe in detail as you pass the ... read more

Up at 5:30 a.m. and temperature was 42° and sunny. Dick's RV park was right next to the highway we did not hear any noise because we were in a dead sleep, so tired from today's travel. Still getting up around 5:30 as body clock is still off. Had breakfast and got on the road to Banff by 8 AM. Blue skies and no clouds on the way to Canadian border at Sweetgrass., which is 120 miles north of Great Falls. Mostly flat farmland along interstate 15, a great highway to travel on with speed limit at 80 mph although I was set at 70 because I'm not that comfortable going above 70 in the RV. And still had some wind to contend with. About 75 miles north of Great Falls we started to get ... read more

Geo: 51.1752, -115.573This morning was a relatively late start, at 9am, and so I had time for a run in the morning mist around the campsite, the mountains peeking out of the cloud every now and again as I ran. I had been warned to stay on the trails at all times when out running, as bears have a natural chase instinct, but one section meant I needed to run along a track which went through the woods. I don't think I have ever run as fast as I did and I was chatting away to the bears as I went, making sure they knew I was there.Fortunately unmaimed, I got back to the campsite and then we were ready for our big thrilling excursion of the day. The minibus dropped five of us off in ... read more

Geo: 51.1752, -115.573This morning, we had to be up incredibly early so that we could beat the crowds at one of the most famous and popular spots in the Rocky Mountains - Lake Louise. During high season, there are so many visitors to the beauty spot that they close the road to it at around 11am. We were fortunate to have a guide who knew this and who would enable us to view the lake in as deserted and natural a state as possible. As we drove in the semi-gloom, the mist was hanging so low that we couldn't see the mountains around us. Every now and again, it lifted, but not enough for us to make our first stop at Lake Moraine; we would be unable to see any of the beautiful scenery that surrounded ... read more

He had lived in Texas and Canada for a while and is married to a Canadian girl. We drove the scenic journey from Lake Louise to Banff, watching for deer and elk crossing specially constructed wildlife bridges over the highway. We also drove along the Bow Valley Parkway for views of Castle Mountain and Johnston Canyon. We wandered around Banff, a town of 8,000 people plus tourists. It was quite busy. As it was close to dinner time we spotted the Mt Royal Hotel and the Tony Romas Restaurant wh... read more

Geo: 51.1752, -115.573This morning we begin our last day on the train. Throughout this region we see unique rock formations called Hoodoos that were formed after the last ice age. We passed the small town of Chase situated on Little Shuswap Lake. It was named after Whitfield Chase who came to the area in 1865. Although lured by gold, he turned to farming. Today Chase has a population of about 2400 and is a popular trout fishing and boating area. Salmon Arm, situated on the southwest arm of Shuswap Lake got its name from the days when spawning salmon were so abundant that you could pitchfork them out of the water. The Salmon Bay Nature Enhancement Reserve is home to over 150 species of birds and waterfowl. Sicamous is situated between Shuswap and Mara Lakes. Often ... read more

20 Jul 2016: Today we wanted to visit Banff, specifically to stop by the visitor's centre, soak in the mineral rich hot spring and take a boat tour of Lake Minnewanka. This trip was by car so we were hopeful we could get around better. The town was crowded as before. We found the visitor's center and we're driving around looking for a parking spot when I noticed the temperature gauge was half way between normal and hot. Hmmmmm. Jeanne mentioned she had smelt some burning oder several days before. We concluded that the worst thing we could be doing was to drive around in gridlocked traffic so we reluctantly but wisely turned around and headed for Lake Louise, watching the Gauge all the way. 21 Jul 2016: I am continuing this story on the same ... read more
