Skiing!! While it is not Switzerland it is beautiful here in Sunshine. Despite its name there has not been very much sun in the past few days. I signed up for a beginner ski lesson yesterday and had my first lesson this morning. Of course my class is full of really young children so I do feel a bit out of place. The instructor is quite dishy, though a little obsessed with skiing. Skiing is second to breathing, it becomes second nature and you can't live without it! He says stuff like that all the time!! It is quite fun and a little bit scary when you can't really stop. I do want to try cross country skiing (even though it is much more work). ... read more

It took us quite a long time to drive out of Calgary because it's a very spread out city - there's lots of countryside to spread into. (However, the residential plots are small so as to maximise the profit for the developer. It's just the infrastructure, shopping malls, parking areas etc that take up all the space.) Our last pieces of Calgary infrastructure were the ski jumps for the Olympic games (and maybe toboggan runs as well, but I couldn't make them out). Shortly after, a jagged hazy shadow appeared on the western horizon. This shadow gradually became more distinct, and seemed to impose a wall blocking our westbound route. Cunningly, though, the road followed the Bow River upstream into the rockies and brought us to Canmore, just outside the Banff National Park. Canmore is Alberta's ... read more

Viewed from 35,000 feet, the prairies didn't look very impressive in early June - lots of flat green patches, interspersed with black patches (which were either lakes or reflections of puffy clouds or a mixture of both). Calgary airport, though, was very cheerful. Clean and modern, with the most attractive baggage carousel area I've ever seen. The central hub of each carousel was adorned with sculptings of Indians in headdress, cowboys with cattle, big buffalo (sorry bison) and settlers in covered wagons, thus setting the tone for the fastest growing city in North America. In Calgary, Shiela, our chief guide and mentor, introduced us to Les (pronounced Less) our coach driver for the rest of the holiday. He brought a shiny new bus to the party, newly minted and retrieved from Florida just 4 days previously. ... read more

Wow - after a several true Wilson Miracles - we caught the crack of dawn flight to Jo Burg fromNairobi - had a 9 hour layer over in Jo Burg watching snow falling in drifts on Europe via Sky Channel on Plasma screen in waiting area. All seemed very surreal - flights before and after our South African airways flight to Heathrow where cancelled. Making it seem impossible that we d get through. After a tense last hour the flight boarded an hour late and we took off... unsure we d be allowed to land - it wasn t untill wheels touched down in Heathrow that we where sure we werent going to have an airport Christmas. The passengers all cheered and clapped as the Airbus touched down in Heathrow. We d made it. A day ... read more

We have had an amazing two days on the Rocky Mountaineer Train. We had a early start 5.15am on Thursday 15 May. We were met by our tour guide John House and taken to our train. Our luggage was sent ahead by truck and was sitting in our room when we arrived at Kamloops and Banff. The first day we travelled to Kamloops; the name Kamloops drives from the Shuswap Indian word "T"Kemlups" meaning meeting of the waters - it refers to the junction of the North and South Thompson Rivers. We travel through an amazing gorge for 260km the sky was blue, our fellow travellers were great fun and the food on the train was great. In our carriage there was to bus loads so we got to meet another 45 people too. On Friday ... read more

Hello everyone! Just a very quick update on our travel blog. We've said a sad 'goodbye' to Whistler, where we'd spent two weeks. It really was a great place to snowboard and have fun! Whilst we where there, it was the World Ski & Snowboard Festival, which meant there was heaps of fun things going on, from 'big air' competitions to lots of live music. One night we stood out in scarfs and hats watching De La Soul with boarders jumping doing 720's in the background to huge fireworks and 'Me, Myself and I'! We made our way down the Icefields Parkway, one of the most amazing drives to do in the world, apparently. We could see why, and appreciated meandering along in our van, taking in the most fantastic scenery. It really was breathtaking - ... read more

So while I was waiting to meet up with a couple of friends from my exchange over skype, I figured i'd do an entry for the first time in almost a year! Wow how time flies! Anyway, Erin and I have been working particularly hard lately, and with school starting to wind down, we decided to take a little trip to the Canadian Rockies for some skiing - snowboarding for Erin - at Sunshine in Banff. I had been skiing to a handful of places, but Sunshine is definitely the top dog now. The trip went well with great weather conditions and even some fairly heavy snowfall on the 2nd day of riding/skiing, and we also enjoyed some great Japanese food in Canmore - just outside of Banff for those of you who don't know. While ... read more
