FORT LAUDERDALE TO BERMUDA ON THE PRINSEDAM I left Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Bermuda on the Prinsedam on May 17, 2013. The Prinsedam is a relatively small ship, 793 passengers and 439 crew, with follow stops in France and Belgium before ending in Tillbury, England. There are advantages and disadvantages to sailing on a small vessel. So far, I’ve only seen the advantages. I’ve met several really nice people from many locales, especially a couple from San Fransisco and another from San Jose. There are fewer bars on a small ship, so I get to know the bar tenders quicker and the entertainers as well. The entertainment on this ship is superior to many of the larger ships I’ve been on recently. Today I landed in Hamilton, Bermuda. I got up early to view the fantastic ... read more

We should be ashamed to say I guess - we honestly thought BERMUDA was much closer to the other Caribbean islands. Surprised were we when we booked our flight a week before departure and saw the flight was only 2 hours (no fear of the Bermuda triangle here). Almost directly east from New York. Our timing could not have been better. We just got hit by hurricane Sandy and have been without electricity for quite some time so it was time to get out of dodge. Flying out over the New York area was a shock. The area was devastated as far as we could see. We landed in HAMILTON very late. The taxi cab ride to the other side of the island to CAMBRIDGE BEACHES HOTEL RESORT took just under an hour. We winded our ... read more

Arrived in Bermuda with overcast skies and showers. Got off the ship and purchased bus/ferry day passes and glass bottom boat tickets. Took the ferry from West End to Hamilton where it was raining more. Thought we’d take a horse & buggy ride, but guess they don’t like the rain as none could be found. Then we did a little shopping with Judy being the quantity winner. Proceeded to walk to the bus station where we took a bus back along the scenic route of Horseshoe Bay. We got off at the Old Naval Station and checked out a shop there and then crossed over to where we waited for the glass bottom boat. Went to the lower deck and the guides came and told us the sun was out and they had dried off the ... read more

Hi Everybody! If you are looking for a safe spot for a vacation, you might want to consider Bermuda. It is only 2 1/2 hours from Atlanta. It has a sunny, temperate climate (70's & 80's), beautiful pink sand beaches, is very clean, and has friendly people. The only negative is that it is expensive! Everything is imported from the U.S. They grow a few crops but are unable to meet the needs of the population. Luckily, the citizens do not have to pay income tax or sales tax. The island has zero unemployment. I assumed Bermuda was one large island but quickly discovered that it is made up of six main islands joined by bridges. There are actually 138 islands, but some are just large volcanic rocks. Bermuda is 21 square miles. Locals call ... read more

Having arrived in Bermuda on the 6th May, we've been here now for just shy of 3 weeks. We've seen several boats come in and depart on the same journey we're expecting to undertake - the Snark, Bavarian Spirit, Triple D, Otra Vida, and while they have been filling up with jerry cans of extra fuel, we have been waiting patiently for a better weather window. It's possibly a futile exercise as who knows when it's going to come. Daily emails from all those guys is telling us that there hasn't been a lot of wind around and when there is, it's often on the now. However, after receiving a slightly better window, we are planning on leaving tomorrow. Hence, my brief input into the blog to try to get everything up to date before doing ... read more

We planned to spend our third day in Bermuda around the Dockyard in Sandys Parish (Ireland Island) and take the bus as far as the Fort Scaur site. All started well. We were off the ship before 9:00 a.m. and headed for the Bermuda Craft Market. But, before we could get there, a huge rainstorm came up! This wasn't a light squall like we'd experienced in Hamilton, it was a downpour! We were drenched! There was nothing to do but to head back to the ship to change clothes. As we headed for our cabin, our steward spotted us and handed us extra towels to dry off. Very nice! By the time we dried off, changed clothes, and put our wet clothes up to dry, we'd lost an hour. That was the end of the plan ... read more

For our second day in Bermuda, Susan and I planned to see the Verdmont house museum and then explore the city of Hamilton. Verdmont is out in the country, about halfway between Hamilton and St. George. Getting there requires taking a bus. (Or renting a scooter. Visitors may not rent cars in Bermuda.) Another SeaExpress ferry took us form the Dockyard across Great Sound to Hamilton. There were rain squalls along the way, but the rain had let up by the time we docked in Hamilton. Next, we needed to find the bus terminal. The Hamilton bus terminal is next to City Hall on Church Street. It's very busy, showing the popularity of bus transport. We caught a Line 1 bus from Hamilton to St. George, along the South Highway.Following proper Bermuda bus protocol, we addressed ... read more

Bermuda is said to be one of the most isolated places on earth. The nearest land is Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, 596 miles (nearly 1,000 km) away. Colleagues at work seemed to know very little about Bermuda when I told them I was traveling there. It is not part of the Caribbean, though it is often grouped with the Caribbean islands. Bermuda is a group of volcanic Atlantic Ocean islands (three main islands and dozens of smaller ones) warmed by the Gulf Stream. With a population of 66,000 it is the largest remaining British colony. As we were to discover, the history of Bermuda and Virginia are intertwined. Bermuda in fact was colonized when a group of ships bringing supplies to the Jamestown colony were blown there by a hurricane in 1609. I was up on ... read more

It seems a little strange writing a travel blog about Bermuda when I lived there for 6 and a half years, but its been included in our trip so here goes. Bermuda was always going to be visited at some point on our trip, but we were going to go in September time, nearer the end of our trip and after we´d travelled through the US. Quite a few months ago though, a friend from Bermuda, Gary, announced his wedding date in South Africa for mid November as well as his departure from Bermuda in August. So we extended our round the world trip until December (was there really any point going home to try to find work for 2 months?!) and engineered a trip on airmiles to Bermuda to coincide with his departure date. So ... read more
