Well, last night was quite an adventure. It sure was something to see once in your life but I would say that the after experience, it was worth it. It was a spectacular fireworks display and they sure do know how to impress!! December 31st started with a walk about the old part of town through the Gold Souk and the Spice Souk. I had been to them before but it's always a site to see and wander through. It's amazing how these areas of town still survive after what I saw later in the day. The Spice Souk has an amazing aray of spices from all over the world with a lot that you can't either get at home or they are waaaaaaay too expensive. One store had a very large fish bowl filled with ... read more

We have been for a walk along the creek and had some Arabian food which was very nice. Well, today was the first full day in the Middle East for this trip. It was nice and warm here...25C. Was in shorts and a tshirt all day. Started the day with a stroll through the neighbourhood around the hotel and had a shawarma for breakfast. Much cheaper and waaaaay better here then at home. Then took an abra (for one Dinar...30 cents) across Dubai Creek and went to the old part of town called the Bastika. I got to the same restaurant I went to a few time seven years ago. A great little place to sit and write and have coffee. In the Bastika there is a coffee museum (among other museums) which was kinda cool to see. Then with lunch I had a Turkish Coffee....I know I like my coffee strong but that ... read more

So I made it out onto leg one of this adventure! I left YVR at 1030 on the 28th and kind of assumed that the would be issues in SEA with the EK flight. I got there and waited for four hours to see if they could get me on. I was the only one on the wait list.....that was surprising. The agent cleared me to go to the gate and then had me wait there. Her words were 'It will be a miracle if you get on'. But I did! There was soon much craziness at the gate. For those of you airline employees...they had 84 gate check items!!! I guess we don't have it bad in YVR. The flight was 14 hours and I swear there was the Natinal Infant Choir of India was ... read more

After a lovely seven hour flight, on a plane which felt like a mansion taking off, we have arrived in Dubai. By 'we', I mean my family and I. We have not yet punched each other. It's 2:30am in the morning and I've just eaten a huge omlette croissant - no, I didn't think that food combination was possible either. Our connecting flight to Male, The Maldives leaves in a couple of hours - another four hours and another time difference away. We are back in Dubai for a proper snoop in about nine days' time. In the meantime, Dubai airport is pretty - it has a huge fountain and lots of mini founains around it all lit up by different colours. My sister has jut looked over my shoulder and laughed at me for these ... read more

Where there is camel milk, there are great sweets to be had by all! One of our missions on this trip was to sample the sweetness provided by our dromedary friends at the Camelicious Dairy. At the dairy, we tried Al Nassma Chocolates. They are high-end chocolates with flavors such as date, macademia nut-orange, pistashio, arabic coffee ceam and such. The chocolate company proudly states they are the first company to make chocolate with camel milk. We were told camel milk is so low in fat, the company must first turn the milk into powder before they can produce the chocolate. Either way, it is delicious! They make chocolate bars and camel shaped chocolates. They even sell large chocolate camels covered in gold foil. They remind me of those big hollow bunnies we use to get ... read more

I remember the morning and evening chores at Shamrock Farms. Grampy opened the gate for the milk cow who was always waiting at the gate. She voluntarily marched into the front stall of the barn like a dutiful employee and wait for Grampy to milk her. Grampy balanced on the tiny T-shaped wooden stool and press his head into her side as he methodically gathered her contribution for the breakfast table. We then carefully took the big silver bucket full of warm milk to the ranch house where Granny would strain most of the cream off the top. That is how we got our milk, and cream for ice cream. I never enjoyed milking and many times would "accidentally" shoot the milk to the patient audience of cats watching me fumble through through the task. And, ... read more

Geo: 25.27, 55.33TIME CHECK: 0515hrs - Awake and packed. I glance out of hotel window. A dim half light is gathering slowly as a lone pool attendant goes about his chores in readiness for the new days intake of tourists. We are ready and down in the reception by 0630........the ever faithful Lala is waiting for us. Within 20 minutes we are bidding our farewells at the Airport and quickly pass through airside......Flight EK061 (777 ER 300) to Dubai: Flight Time 4 hours. Time to sit back a sum up the events of the last 10 days listening to Led Zep and sipping on a Tanqueray.
