After getting up I had to clean & dry everything we'd left out or under Billy – the rain had bounced covering everything in earth. The couples on the bikes got up really early to get their kit dry before packing up & heading off, one to Istanbul & the other to Thessaloniki & both long rides in a day of heat The ground took a while to dry out despite the rising temperature...so we just relaxed & kept busy doing nothing...In the evening we sat on the beach watching the sunset which was truly magnificent, much clearer than in Cyprus for example as the air was clean & by this time very still. Our last full day in Turkey...... read more

4th Shopping – back to the jewelry / carpet shop – turns out they were second hand shops, or as I would say, junk shops! Ha! But I have the feeling that this may come back to bite me.... Then down the road to the clothes shop – 1 T'shirt & a tunic top, 32TL or £8, bargain (for Cathy, not me) Back home & I washed Billy without a hose pipe (first time in over 4 months) & whilst Cathy slept.... then a swim as it was very hot, c.35* but also very windy still. Donned my pinny, made dinner & an early night 5th Checked out – the receptionist at the hotel said that Bergama was the windy 'city' of Turkey, so now we know. When we scaled Pergamon the other day, the Government ... read more

Geo: 39.9199, 32.8543So again….lots has happened. Before leaving Istanbul we did the tourist thing, we had moved up to the Black Sea and stayed in a camp ground called Mystik.. which got 3 Stars because it had lots of kittens and a shady place to rest.Getting to Istanbul was easy via the Metro bus and underground train…. once we understood the system. On Friday we went to the China embassy only to arrive at 1:15 and they closed at 12:00… bugger, well at least we knew where it was located. So back to camp where we bumped into a young couple from Germany who were doing their first overland trip. Only short, going no further than Turkey this time. Interestingly they had become inspired after ready in a book by another crazy German who we travelled with ... read more

Leisurely start to the day – we could see it was going to be a scorcher - & off on a dolmus to town. We were dead lucky as 2 came alomg & we jumped on the one that went quite close to the base of the mountain where the Pergamon cable car started. These dolmus cost 1.75 TL each which is about 45p – bargain. Even better if you know where they're going! So, we get off the dolmus & walk on up the hill to base camp, passing carpet shops & the like...oh dear. We buy our cable car ticket for 26TL; in this ticket office there are 3 people...but a chap comes out of a different office, tears the ticket, shows us through the 'automated turnstile', pushes the lift door & says bye ... read more

The journey to Bergama was fine - acres & acres of lush green fields - & the road through Izmir seemed a lot quicker than coming down – maybe we were just used to it by now? We arrived looking for a different camp site to the one we stayed at when we drove south but no. We remembered that we had tried to find it last time & saw the sign for here, the Berksoy Hotel. It's fine – a grassed area adjoining the pool & outside restaurant. It must be school holiday time as on both afternoons they have held swimming classes for about 40 children; a bit noisy but they didn't stay long. Next to us are a pleasant couple from Quebec in a French plated motorhome – they speak ok English, which ... read more

Geo: 41.0138, 28.9497June 30th Bulgaria – silgiri beach With the intent of passing into Turkey we headed downthe southern coast of Bulgaria to a beach called Silgiri, according to Googlethere is a campsite just before the last Bulgarian town. So ambled on down anddid manage to find it after becoming concerned we had actually crossed intoTurkey. On first sight the campsite looked great, simple and not many peoplethere and we were hoping for a quiet night. After heading down to the beachwhich was beautiful we went back to camp to cook dinner and settle in. We evenhad a camp fire using drift wood we had collected on the beach. So this is where the night took and interesting turn, we discoveredthere was some English speaking Bulgarians, one group presented us with a platefull of freshly BBQ'ed shrimp ... read more
