Had a lovely meal last night – a sea bass big enough for 2 to share. Really well cooked over charcoal. Awoke to a beautiful blue sky & no wind unlike yesterday. Off to the showers – no hot water. We reckon the kitchen had used it all last night & it was too early to be refreshed. I washed Cathy's hair in the outside washing up area which was separate. We passed so many old relics of WW2, bunkers, firing positions etc. We wanted to stop at a memorial but saw it late & a coach was too close behind to brake too hard; we've made a note to go on our return. The town of Gallipoli is huge & not what we were expecting so didn't drive in Off now to catch a ferry ... read more

Our beautiful Hotel Bella is a true gem! It's facade is a sea of brilliant green vines while the interior is decorated with true Turkish flair - Ottoman furniture, carpets on the floor and walls, glittering mosaic lamps and gorgeous ceramics. We have a small balcony where we overlook the ruins of St. John's Basilica. We have the best sign in our bathroom though. It reads, "Welcome to the ancient city of Selçuk. Please do not 'flash' anything down the toilet"! Try as we might, I think the toilet water has been flashed once or twice:) After unpacking, we went upstairs to the gorgeous terrace area to meet with Erdal, one of the owners. He explained things we could see, excursions we could take, as well as giving us some history about Selçuk. Just off this ... read more

After ANZAC day the tour continue with us following the standard tour route thought Turkey. Over the next two days we visited a number of ancient roman sites, all UNESCO World Heritage listed sites. Sites we visited included the hill top town of Pergamum with it’s amphitheatre. We also visit the neighbouring Asclepion where Galen the great roman physician hospital was located. The next day we travelled to the legendary Roman city of Ephesus. Originally founded as a Greek city it became the Roman capital of Asia Minor It includes the ruins of the Temple of Artemis - one of the Seven Ancient Wonders. Major sites seen included the Great Theatre once capable of seating 25,000 spectators, Curetes Way, the Temple of Serapis, the façades of the Temple of Hadrian and the awesome Library of Celsus. ... read more

I'm making good on my promise to write more blogs after I returned home on April 23. Actual date in Ephesus was April 7th, a beautiful warm day so welcomed after some chilly days in Istanbul. It was my second visit, the last being in November, 2000. Doesn't matter. I was still gobsmacked by the history, the casual ruins of ruins rolled over to one side of the main agora now, a walkway, but in ancient times marketplace. Some history, I know boring, but it helps to put things into perspective. Ancient Ephesus was founded by the Athenians about 1000 B.C., it lay at the confluence of empire, trade, and religion. It was a major banking and merchant metropolis with a population of around 300,000. At that time the city had a good harbor with land ... read more

Today was too much travel. We were up at 6 and on the road by 7 ish. We traveled 620 km thrift to Pumakkale. The country side is simply beautiful...but I'm getting a bit sick of being in a bus to be honest. We could have flown here. None the less stopped for a couple meals. Got some gifts for my sister too. Got to the hotel, very relieved it was a nice big bed and a very clean room. The first thing Kaine did in the room was call for the day spa for massages for us both. What a treat. Off to the thermal pools at the Collasse spa hotel (where we stayed) until my 7pm massage. What an interesting massage, she had sharp nails and it was bare all up top. Dinner time ... read more

Arriving to Ataturk airport, we handed over our passports and our flight confirmation email to the man behind the counter. “There is a problem.” Words you really don’t want to hear at an airport. “You are at the wrong airport.” Hearts sink. Here nice and early but not nearly enough time to get to another airport. “Go to the main ticket agent down the hall.” Our tickets were not refundable but flights are still leaving in 30 mins, 2 hours, 3 hours, etc. from now to Izmir. Feeling embarrassed about our error, we re-booked our flight to leave from Ataturk and we were on our way a couple hours later. We took the metro from Izmir Airport to a station that had part of our hotel name in it. We couldn’t narrow down the walking directions ... read more

In Turkey there are more ancient ruins than we can count A long time ago at a history lesson in school I (Ake) heard a lecture about the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. These sites were the most impressive human constructions in Ancient Greece and people travelled from places far away to marvel at the monuments that were erected there. The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (personally I think a better name is The Seven Wonders of the Ancient Greece since the list does not include any construction outside of Ancient Greece) are/were the following: • The Great Pyramid of Giza • Hanging Gardens of Babylon • Temple of Artemis • Statue of Zeus • Mausoleum at Halicarnassus • Colossus of Rhodes • Lighthouse of Alexandria I was fascinated by these wonderful statues and ... read more

To walk in the water from the Pamukkale hot spring is a sweet luxury The first half of this trip I, Ake, spent visiting various ancient sites in the southeast of Turkey. But there was one more thing I wanted to see while being in this part of Turkey and that was Pamukkale. Pamukkale is a place I bypassed when I travelled in Turkey many years ago. Since then I have been thinking about going there many times but haven't found time to until now. It took me twenty years of planning to make it to Pamukkale but finally I have. You might argue that Pamukkale is two sites, not one. The famous one of these two being Pamukkale with its white terraces. The other site, being the less famous one, is Hierapolis which is the ... read more

Where to start, at the beginning is always a good place, don't you think? We didn't really know what to expect in Turkey, our only reason for going there really was that we had seen different photos that various friends had taken over the years, and everyone had told us that it was a place that we really should visit, so off we went. Our flight to Istanbul left from Stansted, and during check in we were asked " do you have your Turkish Visa"? OMG, I thought, my biggest fear was about to come true. We were not going to be allowed to fly. I always hold my breath until we have the boarding passes in our hands at check in, as I have a fear that one day we will we boldly turn up ... read more

Leaving Iran on 15th was easy, a 20km jolly to border, somehow managed to mislay my guide again! and they ushered me into border region quickly. But so many 'fixers' and money changers, all a bit of a shame compared to the easy pace in Iran. Mr Yazd came to Iran side of border with me, to help clear the carnet document, requires 3 different signatures, then quick Xray of bike on Turkish side, all done by 10:30. While Mount Ararat was looking down from just 20km, hazy from Iran side, quite clear while was doing border paperwork, but then clouded over when ready to take photo. So run across Turkey was abit rushed, with ISIS & refruggees crossing up from south, violence in some of the western cities (UK foreign office advice none too possitive), ... read more
