When I woke this morning I could still feel our ship moving. Debarkation for Patmos was supposed to start at 9:30. In my windowless room it was a bit difficult to guess just what time of day it might be and not having a decent watch with me I had no idea what was going on. After laying awake in bed for maybe 15 minutes while Mike blissfully dreamt of diving with frolicking dolphins and discovering sunken treasure, I fumbled my way over our pile of suitcases toward the bathroom where I could turn on a light and see whether we had slept through Patmos. I was a little bummed to see that it was 5:15 am - about the same time I usually wake up for work back home. It was going to be 4 ... read more

Promises of free time for self-exploration never eventuated. Everyone, including the Top Deck representative is pissed off at the Tour Guide from ‘Fez Travel’- starting to get a sour taste about this tour - just crap organisation. No-one knows entry fees until we get to the specific place making it hard for us to have money on hand - getting to an ATM is near impossible due to lack of free time. Today we also did Tour Guide ‘directed’ visits to a leather, jewellery & sweets ‘stores’ - 3 hours wasted. Also visited the home of the Virgin Mary - am apparently now a ‘Blessed / Haji’ person!! We’re all sick of buffets and some of us are thinking of trying to find our own dinner in Kusadusi tonight. With a long road trip to Istanbul ... read more

After a long and very deep sleep we left Kucukkuyu for Kusadusi via the Acropolis at Pergamum. We stayed in a very nice “holiday resort” on the edge of the Adriatic Sea - a quick dip in the morning was very refreshing. Pergamum is an amazing Roman ruin set high on a mountain - how anyone was ever able to invade this city is beside my comprehension - let alone imagining how they managed to build such a huge place in the first place. During the day we visited a Turkish Carpet store - for a ‘flying carpet show’ (basically the sales pitch involved giving out drinks of Raki and throwing carpets in the air!!!). I purchased a carpet for Elise and Paul. Our trip to Kusadusi was long - we arrived after 11pm. With promises ... read more

We made it to Bodrum and then hired a car and drove to Kushadasi.......Shan did the driving on account of the fact I'd forgotten my licence in London. Have to give credit because the Lonely Planet Guide rates Turkey as one of the more dangerous countries to drive in......add to the fact they drive on the other side and Shan had never drived a Stick Shift before getting us the first 150kms was a pretty fine effort. Personally from the passenger seat it was a pleasure to watch the landscape go by. We made Kushadasi our base for a couple of days and here is where we met Murat the waiter at the Ali Ustanin Yeri Kebab shop.....every meal we had in Kushadasi thereafter was at this cafe. Funny guy and if enyone ends up in ... read more
