Would you be surprised to know I sat patiently by the side of the road? My bus driver doesn’t speak English or doesn’t speak in general, so therefore I have no idea what the problem is exactly. As usual I will sit and wait and daydream. Yesterday was a very tough day. I was extremely burnt out by the end of the day. I can’t really fully describe my feelings – but upset, scared and pissed will probably do best. I wake up in the morning to find Antonio sleeping on the couch in the lounge area in Fethiye. I tried being super quiet and he woke up and seems bothered by the fact he had to sleep there. He said you are the ‘no’ girl… no to my invite on the boat for tea (which ... read more

So after a nice ending to Kas, I make my way to Fethiye. The public bus system is interesting in Turkey. The buses are like shuttle buses (not coach/not minivan). Even though they have destinations listed on the front of the bus, they make stops on the side of the road for locals. They also drop off locals wherever they want. Today I was on a bus that stopped to deliver 2 separate packages. Interesting I thought. After a scenic 2 hour drive I arrive at Fethiye. Antonio Banderis picked me up from the bus station (well a 20 something Turkish man with green eyes who is simply gorgeous). This is the 1st Turkish man that I am actually attracted to as many of them aren’t my cup of tea. He worked at my guest house. ... read more

Hello good people! It's been a pretty crazy week since I left Istanbul. I'll try to summarize the highlights as best I can. Our tour left Istanbul for the Gallipoli peninsula. We visited ANZAC cove, the site of the infamous WWI battle. The allied troops landed by mistake at night and encountered stiff resistance from the Turks, led by officer Mustafa Kemal, who, after defeating the allies, would be promoted to general, and then become the famous Ataturk, founder of the Turkey Republic. I was surprised by how small the cove actually was. I pictured thousands of troops crowding each other with their heavy, wet bags. We visited the Australian and New Zealand memorials, as well as the Turkish memorial. It's easy to forget that the Turkish people visit this site too, and revere it just ... read more

Take me to the beach! Time for a holiday from my holiday. I chose Fethiye as a base for exploring the area because it has about the best transport connections. It is right by the sea but there unfortunately there’s no beach, just a marina! It seemed quite touristy when I arrived but compared to some of the towns in the region it’s an unspoilt paradise You pass through some ridiculous towns on the minibus from Feithye to Olundeniz, basically the Costa del Turkey: complete with English pubs, English Breakfasts, Fish & Chips and even prices in sterling (reminded me of holidays as a kid!). Oludeniz is pretty touristy as well but the fantastic beach and blue lagoon more than make up for it. There were dozens of boat turns running from Fethiye, most visiting 12 ... read more

I needed to head back to Fethiye in order to make my way from Turkey to the island of Rhodes (Greece) via a hydrofoil. In a flash of poor planning, I failed to look at the ferry schedule and arrived on a Thursday, with the next ferry departing the next Tuesday. Sooo, with very little reluctance, I checked back into the V-Go hostel, complete with bar, pool and a very fun and friendly staff contingent to spend the next 5 days. My first order of business was to set up another chance at doing my paragliding, but the weather wasn't going to be good for a day or two, so I decided instead that I hadn't had enough boat time and hopped on a boat to cruise around the Fethiye bay to do a little swimming ... read more

I took a 6 hour bus ride through some of the most rugged, yet lush, terrain I've ever seen and arrived in Fethiye in the early afternoon. Fethiye is a lovely small seaside city set in a sheltered bay. After arriving at my hostel (V-Go Guesthouse), I promptly befriended the hostel's manager (Orhan) and their chef (Ramazan) and spent the day relaxing barside with them and a few other travellers over some beers and tasty eats... I spent some time in Fethiye wandering through the town. After seeing a ancient 600 person and some rock tombs, I decided I needed to beat the heat and sit down on the side of the street to have a beer with a local. He turned out to be the dirtiest old man I have met (naturally I liked him ... read more

Türkiye Farewell Greece, hello Turkey! Again, we find ourselves on a boat, this time from Rhodes to Fethiye, Turkey... However this time the ride was not so smooth, as a result the trip was much longer than it should have been and quite rough, there were quite a few people not looking too good! Fethiye is a pretty seaside town which is very seasoned to tourists, it even has it's own Gran Bazaar. Unfortunately we saw a little more of Fethiye than was planned due to our first holiday hiccup, the boat we were booked on the next day was not going until the following day so we found ourselves doing the journey on road in a tiny little hire car, nicknamed 'the beast', following 'Silverman' on his vespa! (see photos...) We now find ourselves in ... read more

Fethiye is another beautiful Turkish coastal town. Many of it’s ancient structures, notably the Lycian tomb lie atop the hill overlooking the city. The tomb’s construction is dated back to 4 BC, when Fethiye was known as the ancient city of Telmessos. The history of the name of Telmessos goes something along the lines of: The god Apollo falls in love with the youngest daughter of the King of Phoenicia, Agenor. He disguises himself as a small dog and thus gains the love of the shy, withdrawn daughter. After he reappears as a handsome man, they have a son, whom they name 'Telmessos' (the land of lights). As we walk towards the start of a 6km uphill hike, and plot various ways to trick dad into walking the trail a dude pulls up next to us ... read more

There is so much to see in Turkey we are still here. We are currently spending the night camping on the coast of the Dead Sea/Blue Lagoon. We have rounded the most Southern tip of Turkey and are headed along the Western Coast towards Greece. We spent last night and most of today in Kekova/Simena. We found this Jewel of a spot and did not want to leave. You can only get to this spot by boat or park and hike in. We hiked over a big hill, through a Castle, and down hundreds of step to find this little village. Due to an earthquake, 100s of years ago , the entire peninsula was covered with water and the city was washed into the sea. We took a boat ride from a little local man and ... read more

DAY 62 - 66 We arrive here from Pamukkale at around 9:30 PM and have to wait 30min. for the shuttle bus to take us to the V-Go Hostel. We did not make reservaations and the only thing available is a dorm room with 3 other women. A young Canadian man offered us his room which was a double bed. We took it since is was so late and figured that Angie was too tired to toss and turn like she usually does. We were assured that they would have a twin single the next day. But after a long day of hiking and swimming we come back to find we are in the same room. The hostel is nice with a swimming pool that we never use and a patio with bar that we ... read more
