Background: Ruled by the Al Thani family since the mid-1800s, Qatar transformed itself from a poor British protectorate noted mainly for pearling into an independent state with significant oil and natural gas revenues. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Qatari economy was crippled by a continuous siphoning off of petroleum revenues by the amir, who had ruled the country since 1972. His son, the current Amir HAMAD bin Khalifa Al Thani, overthrew him in a bloodless coup in 1995. In 2001, Qatar resolved its longstanding border disputes with both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Oil and natural gas revenues enable Qatar to have one of the highest per capita incomes in the world.

Four Sandy Days in Doha Middle East » Qatar » Doha
We left Manila 5 pm of October 9, 2008 for a nearly 10 hr flight to arrive in Doha, Qatar well before midnight of the same day. I met up with my traveling group where all I had was a list of names and a single cellphone number. But I'm pretty good at this game. I looked around, found all 3 'strangers' in my group. Never missed. A 100% batting average. The fourth guy I spotted when we landed in Doha. I knew it was him the moment we stopped to get our bearings to prepare to leave the airport. Not [View Full Entry]

Race to Qatar Middle East » Qatar » Doha
Well we arrived here in the month of Ramadan (religious Muslim holy month). This means that no alcohol will be for sale anywhere in Qatar, the shops will be closed from about 2 until sometimes 8 at night but will trade again until midnight. After Ramadan alcohol can be purchased and enjoyed at hotels and bars/clubs. Then, getting a taxi to take you there is a hopeless case, except if you had booked it at 6 in the morning. Some Indian Sub-continent locals are taking advantage of this and will give you his number to phone if you want to go [View Full Entry]

Work in Qatar Middle East » Qatar » Doha
for my job at Van Oord i am in Qatar 30th October I flew from Amsterdam via Dubai to Doha in Qatar. After the landing and waiting for my luggage, the Driver picked me up from the airport. After approximately 1 hour we arrived in Ras Lafan. This is an industrial city in the middle of the dessert (impressive to se during the night). Near the project site we have our living camp. Here stay approximately 1300 people that all work on the construction of the breakwater. The first day was a day to get used to the Arabic ways [View Full Entry]

Harold in Doha,
My dirty car in the city
Me in my car in the dessert

I learned a very important rule while flying, make sure the name on your airline tickets match what is on your visa! Fortunately the people at Qatar airways were able to fix the problem very quickly. I didn't even have to get my birth certificate out :P As I was waiting to board the plane the person who originally helped me with my ticketing just smiled and said "Glad you made it." The flight was a nice one, and I slept most of the way to Doha. Oh Mom you will like this, they handed out socks to everyone so your [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Doha Middle East » Qatar » Doha
I know I know I have been here for 5 weeks now and have not yet updated my blog but I'm not gonna lie - my social like is nuts here and I hardly ever have the time to check email because we are always off doing something! I don't really have the time now either but I definitely plan to write a long blog with pics (though they mostly consist of us drinking or eating!) this week. But I just got my address so I wanted to send that out to people - would love love love to receive some [View Full Entry]

Ramadan Kareem Middle East » Qatar » Doha
14,500 km and 25 hours after I left NZ I landed in Doha Qatar at 6am. The airoplane doors opened and I thought "Yeah this heat isnt so bad" ! Liliana was there to pick me up (I really cant recall too much as I hadnt slept in 3 days). On the way to the compound she stopped off and picked up some groceries for our villa as the other girls weren't flying in until much later that night. In the car i was knocking back some water only to be told it's Ramadan (I knew this) but when you're dehydrated [View Full Entry]

Marathon Travel from Africa to Asia - Our 32-hour travel day… From the start of our journey, we knew that leaving Africa was going to be both emotionally and physically challenging. We wrote in our last blog of the emotional attachments we made in Tanzania to the Kili Kids orphanage and to the warm, generous people we met throughout our safari adventures. Our physical challenge was one of endurance, to traverse the distance from Arusha, Tanzania, to Chiang Mai, Thailand, over a 32-hour time period and through 4 time zones. Thankfully, Sam and Lauren are fabulous travellers. Wi [View Full Entry]

So I arrived well after 11 pm on Wednesday night here (7 hours behind the east coast). Didn't get to sleep til after 1 and then woke up around 5. We had to be ready to get picked up at 7:30 am where we had to go to medical checks to get our residence visas and identity cards! So I met everyone around 7:30 - 8 Irish, 2 Scots, 3 South Africans, 2 Lebanese, 2 Australians, 1 Canadian and 1 American (yep, that'd be me!). I don't understand how I'm the only American though I don't really mind - I just [View Full Entry]

8 hours down, 7 hours to go... Sunday, July 22, 2007 at 7:38pm So, had better make this quick as am on a 10 minute time limit in an internet cafe in Doha airport... First leg of journey over, and now have 3 hours to go until I board the next plane to the middle of nowhere! Right now, am feeling very alone... its kinda nice, but wierd. Also feeling ridiculously overwhelmed.. as the plane landed caught a glimpse of the amazingly unfamiliar landscape- its like something off the news. Anyway, am off to plant myself firmly in the smoking room [View Full Entry]

Ho Ho Ho, Merry Christmas Travelers, I look out on the white dunes a poorer, poorer man from this point in Qatar. I must admonish in advance that my sleep schedule since leaving Japan (and even before, to be perfectly honest) has been less circadian rhythmic and more circadian 'atonal, uncoordinated deaf child doing the macarena' (I bet there's a youtube video of that, but I swear I just made that up for illustrative purposes). I'm actually in fairly good spirits having slept a couple of hours and having decided to splurge on the $15 travel adapter (Why didn't I buy [View Full Entry]
