On Saturday morning, I slept in a little and then we spent a quiet day, mostly in our room. We went down to the Al Hubara restaurant for lunch and had a two for one meal, as Fletcher had been given a voucher for the place when he joined the Marriot Rewards club. The lunch was fine, albeit only accompanied by water, as there are many great salads, seafood and various meats and eastern style dishes to choose from. We went out to the track on the 3-30pm bus. This time, the driver knew where to drop us so it was not far to walk into the VIP area. The night's program was interesting and varied. The qualifying rounds of the Men's Discus saw Matt Denny from Australia qualify in 3rd place with a great throw ... read more

Wednesday and Thursday were Congress days. This is the four yearly meeting where new elections take place and issues are debated by delegates from all the member countries. Athletics has more member countries than any other sport in the world. Fletcher is an Area Delegate but this year was also asked to be a Scrutineer during the voting process. He was fully occupied on both days and started his mornings at 8am. While he was busy there was not much for me to do, especially here. In former years the local organising committee would offer day trips for "Accompanying Persons" as we are designated. We visited the Great Wall in Beijing and the Kremlin in Moscow, but here there was nothing planned. So I spent the two days resting in the hotel as it was far ... read more

On Monday morning we were up very early as our plane to Doha left at 8am.This meant a 6am arrival at Heathrow so a 4-30am alarm. We had decided to accept an offer from the Concierge at our hotel for a car to take us to Heathrow. It would only cost about 5 pounds more than a taxi to Paddington and then the Heathrow Express and it would save a lot of hassle. The driver was early and we were ready. We sped off in the darkness and were very glad to be taken in comfort rather than struggle on and off trains. Once at Terminal 4 it did not take long to check in and find the lounge. Then it was a pleasant wait for boarding and a 6 hour flight to Doha.We arrived here ... read more

46° Hazy Fabulous that we were upgraded to a late checkout! And we slept most of it. Brian went for a stroll one block over to the Cheverolet shop for a dose of Corvette. He reckoned he had never been in such heat before... & i'm talking about the weather. Reorganized our bags & waited for the airport shuttle in the luxury of the airconditioning. Hamad International Airport is fantastic...all brand new. We asked what they use to power everything...i'll leave you to guess & no google cheating...let you know tomorrow.. ... read more

Well we did the longhaul with Qatar Airlines and they were great all the way. We managed to obtain 2 seats on our own. I decided there isn't alot of difference between the 12 & 17 hour longhaul.....only slept a pinch! I say we've broken the back of it & now we're enjoying some airconditioning space and an enormous comfy bed in Doha. We are just a 20 minute shuttle drive from the Airport. Can't hear the traffic outside due to double glazing. Doha is preparing for the 2022 world cup (football) & so we see the new Metro being established. The Airport itself is big & i'm fairly sure it is not long new either. We probably won't get time to head out & venture & i'm sure the day will be in the late ... read more

... read more

... read more

We would never get use to this terrible heat. As soon as you leave the hotel it hits you. A curtain of hot air greats you and there is now way you get away from it. Even in the shade the hot air follows you. There is no colour in the buildings. They all have this grey shade over them. Of course the dust that hangs over the city is no help. The buildings all have flat roofs, no bricks or tiles, all flat roofs that they use for TV discs and other electric equipment so as air-conditions etc. You certainly have them here. Except in the souq. There they use these enormous fans to sort of keep a cool air going. We decided to visit the museum of Islam Art. Not that far away from ... read more

We had a good flight and arrived in Doha at 6 a.m.We had again a problem leaving Adelaide with security. They took Liz little suitcase completely apart looking for something that was detected going through the X-ray. We found out later it was a small plate of a church in Haarlem Liz wanted to give to somebody in for it had no value to us. It was a hold up but apart from that there were no other problems. No problems at all in Doha where we arrived in a very hot morning and had to look for a cab to take us to the hotel that was close to the old city.We were ushered to a nice room with walk in shower. Liz went for a snooze while I tried to set up the internet ... read more
