Background: Ruled by the Al Thani family since the mid-1800s, Qatar transformed itself from a poor British protectorate noted mainly for pearling into an independent state with significant oil and natural gas revenues. During the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Qatari economy was crippled by a continuous siphoning off of petroleum revenues by the amir, who had ruled the country since 1972. His son, the current Amir HAMAD bin Khalifa Al Thani, overthrew him in a bloodless coup in 1995. In 2001, Qatar resolved its longstanding border disputes with both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Oil and natural gas revenues enable Qatar to have one of the highest per capita incomes in the world.

30 July 2009 Morning/afternoon/evening everyone! Having finished Cabin Services the previous day, we went straight into the Safety and Emergency Procedures (SEP). We learnt how to handle ourselves, the passengers and the aircraft in a variety of emergency situations including ditching on water, lavatory fires and ground evacuations. We also learned how to deal with situations such as an incapacitated pilot, unruly passengers and the legalities surrounding the carriage of special passengers. Did you know that a maximum of 6 Falcons are allowed on board?? No, I didn’t either... On [View Full Entry]

On July 15th, we said our good byes to our fellow volunteers and boarded a Qatar Airways flight to Doha. The luxury of the airplane in comparison to the way we had been living for the past two months was striking. Qatar Airways certainly aims to please. Upon arrival in Doha, we were given free visas, a free hotel stay at the Movenpick, and free dinner... all because we had a 13 hour layover. It was 37 degrees Celsius when we landed - did I mention that? We were crazy hot but spent about two hours exploring the city. Doha's buildings [View Full Entry]

The first few weeks... Middle East » Qatar » Doha
10 July 2009 After two months worth of medicals and waiting, I finally arrived in Doha on 20th June. I was met at the airport by a housing officer who took me to my apartment. It is in the Bin Mahmoud district which is a twenty minute drive from the airport. The apartment is very large and is brand new, so I am amongst the first batch of people to live in it. We all received a welcome hamper with so essential foods such as bread, milk and water as well as all the cutlery and crockery for the kitchen. Later [View Full Entry]

And so, week 5 on the road and I seem to have landed in Qatar. Actually not quite five weeks, I think I got a few days at home but it just didn’t work out. I kept leaving my laundry in a bag, ready for collection but honestly, the service was rubbish. Or perhaps I’m jinxed - the hotel here managed to lose my trousers for a day and I had to wear shorts to the office. A drop in standards I know but I think I can be excused - it did reach 42C yesterday. The flight out was uneventful [View Full Entry]

9am: It is 43 degrees Celsius outside. Welcome to Qatar. I have just left my home for the last year, Taiwan, land of short shorts, to the Arabian Peninsula, where women hide all but their eyes behind black veils and robes. The temperature is about 10 degrees hotter than what I am used to in tropical Taiwan, but curiously it is so dry that I have not even broken a sweat. This is one of the smallest and richest nations on earth, thanks to it’s reserves of high quality oil, so that BMWs ply it’s desert tracks and cloaked Bedouin men [View Full Entry]
