Desert walks, even short ones, are not for the fainthearted. For someone who has walked in the New Zealand wilderness - for three times as long in a day, and with three times as much weight on their back - the sun, sand, stones, sights and sounds of a desert environment can unproportionally be more burdensome and can play with ones mind. In the Negev lies the depression known as the Makhtesh Ramon, a massive naturally-formed crater from millions of years of flooding, folding and rising upon the landscape. The Great Crater (Makhtesh Ramon). The other day, we went to the great crater, Makhetsh Ramon. It was amazing how many types of plants and rocks there were! Walking through a dried wadi, I saw purple rocks, sand, and bright red rocks, too. There were huge piles of black rocks and little white flowers that grew on a bush that smelled like vanilla! There was a lot of wildlife. We saw a quail like creatures. We also saw three friendly Ibex! There was a big one with huge horns, and two little ones. The great crater is the largest crater in the world on land! Some ... read more

It was amazing to see that anything could live or grow in land so rocky and dry. We saw more ibex...only these ibex were very social, and were eating plastic from a garbage can. Its odd how some parts of Israel are green and tropical, and other parts look like mars. Then on Saturday we climbed at Ein Avdat National Park. It was rocky and steep - the kind of thing an ... read more
