Background: Following World War II, the British withdrew from their mandate of Palestine, and the UN partitioned the area into Arab and Jewish states, an arrangement rejected by the Arabs. Subsequently, the Israelis defeated the Arabs in a series of wars without ending the deep tensions between the two sides. The territories occupied by Israel since the 1967 war are not included in the Israel country profile, unless otherwise noted. On 25 April 1982, Israel withdrew from the Sinai pursuant to the 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty. Israel and Palestinian officials signed on 13 September 1993 a Declaration of Principles (also known as the "Oslo accords") guiding an interim period of Palestinian self-rule. Outstanding territorial and other disputes with Jordan were resolved in the 26 October 1994 Israel-Jordan Treaty of Peace. In addition, on 25 May 2000, Israel withdrew unilaterally from southern Lebanon, which it had occupied since 1982. In keeping with the framework established at the Madrid Conference in October 1991, bilateral negotiations were conducted between Israel and Palestinian representatives and Syria to achieve a permanent settlement. On 24 June 2002, US President BUSH laid out a "road map" for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which envisions a two-state solution. However, progress toward a permanent status agreement has been undermined by Palestinian-Israeli violence ongoing since September 2000. The conflict may have reached a turning point with the election in January 2005 of Mahmud ABBAS as the new Palestinian leader following the November 2004 death of Yasir ARAFAT.

The title of this blog is inspired by a divingcenters slogan. In our last day of the first star course a photographer joined us in two dives. The picture he took are amazing! The first dive that day was to the Satile: - The Satil is a sunken navyshipwreck. - The deck is on 18 metres depth and the bottom of the ship is at 24 metres. - 18 metres was the furthest we went during our first star course. In the second star course we went to the Satil again only this time we swam at the bottom of the [View Full Entry]

Happy New Year everybody! Today is ראש השנה‎, Rosh Hashana, New Years Eve:) We are now in year 5770 actually. So what did I do on New Years Eve? I ate an apple and dipped it in honey. This symbolises a sweet start on the year to come. The sad part is: I didn't find it tasty at all! [View Full Entry]

I spontaneously decided to go to Eilat with three of Roees friends two weeks ago. We bought bustickets and left at midnight. The busride is five and a half hours from Haifa to Eilat. We arrived there very early in other words. Our first diving lesson started at 9 in that same morning. I first completed a one star diving class, which allows me to dive down to 18 metres. The course lasted for five days starting with lectures and movies in the morning and ending with dives in the afternoon. In the first three days we did a lot of [View Full Entry]

Continuing my tour around Israel, to say good bye to friends and to see some last sights has been fun, good to see people, good to find more treasures in this small but historically packed country. The journey has taken me back to the South, firstly to Shakharut (a village on my desert trek) where I went to stay with Iran and his girlfriend overnight in their desert house. It was lovely to be in the desert again, without the light and noise pollution from the town. The stars were so bright and the air so clear and although it is [View Full Entry]

So, after fourteen hours of traveling from NY to London to Tel Aviv, I am finally on Kibbutz Ketura, and it is AMAZING. From my room I can see the mountains in Jordan (the border is only three miles away). The kibbutz has around 140 members, a pool surrounded by mountains, tennis courts, soccer field, an algae farm which produces algae that changes color based on its stress level, date palm tree fields, experimental orchards, horses, camels, cows, and sooo much other stuff. On the five hour drive yesterday from Tel Aviv to the kibbutz, we stopped at מכתש ר&# [View Full Entry]

So today was gorgeous as always! In the morning we got a tour of the kibbutz and learned a lot about its history and also had an introduction to the course. During our afternoon siesta, we went out to the pool for a couple hours and swam/ layed out ( I am already starting to get tan!). In the evening, we went to Hai Bar Nature Reserve which is an amazing place. Hai Bar's goal is to bring animals that used to be native to the area but for reasons such as human interference have become nearly extinct and have them [View Full Entry]

June 8th Up at seven to catch the public bus to Eilat. We finally get to ride on one of the innumerable green buses that are all over the place here. Said goodbye to Smore and started the 5 hour bus ride. We got here at two thirtyish and went where? To the beach of course, though the sand here is not as nice. From here I can see Jordan and Saudi Arabia, and I know that Egypt is right around the point. Pretty cool. There are some huge black sea urchins here that I spotted by a rock. We’re going [View Full Entry]

I got up late today, did some laundry, and basically just chilled out until about one. I guess you could say that I am trying to conserve energy for tonight. At about one thirty I went to the reef beach with Ruth, Rafi, and David, and we rented some snorkel gear and took turns snorkeling over the reefs that are right at the shore line. They are incredible! I saw yellow coral masses that probably weighed twice my weight. They looked like big brains. I also saw teeny purple coral mounds, black urchins with spikes at least a foot long. You [View Full Entry]

We are now exactly one week away from flight from Cairo to Athens. Today we are sort of flying blind. As I explained to Joshua, we have no idea where we will be sleeping the night or even what country we will be in. Depending on what happens with border crossings, we might end the day in Jordan, Israel, or Egypt. After breakfast at the hotel, we set off in a crew cab style pickup truck. Our driver, it turns out, has a brother in Edmonton and has visited there (in the winter no less). We have some great views as [View Full Entry]

Wadi Rum
Leaving Jordan
Don't enter Isreal with this booklet

I hinted at this the other day with my post about going to Jordan. The issues at the boarder. I've taken some time and formulated my thoughts into an entry. In light of recent visits to the middle east by assorted US politicians and comments about the region by candidates for president, I thought I would chime in with my 4 cents. You can form your own opinions... We got into Israel at about 7:30 am after 8 hours of traveling. The boarder station itself is situated right on the coast, with a big cliff on the other side, only one [View Full Entry]
