Dag 4 alweer! Nog steeds prachtig weer, blauwe lucht, geen wind en geen regen, max temp iets onder de 20 graden. Zelfs de lokale bevolking is verbaasd. Vandaag stond de eerste fietstocht op het programma. Na het ontbijt werden we door een medewerker van het hotel naar een boerderij even verderop gebracht, waar we de fietsen konden huren. De eigenaar vroeg aan ons of we ook helmen wilden hebben, waarop we "nee" zeiden, en toen zei ze: "ahh, you're Dutch!" (locals zien we hier trouwens ook niet met helmen). De fietstocht ging over de rondweg (en tevens enige weg) rond het hele eiland, dus er kon weinig fout gaan. De kop is eraf, de eerste wandeling zit erop! Zo'n 15 kilometer, niet superzwaar, fijn voor een eerste wandeling. We werden na het ontbijt (we hebben de black pudding maar even overgeslagen en zijn voor de poached eggs gegaan) opgehaald en naar het bezoekerscentrum van de Tomb of the Eagles gebracht. Dit is een museumpje waar 2 archeologische vindplaatsen in de buurt liggen (de Broze Age site en de Tomb of the Eagles) en tevens het startpunt van onze wandeling, welke voor een groot deel langs de kust terug naar St. Margarets Hope gaat. In het museumpje hebben we uitleg gekregen over de vindplaatsen en hebben ze ook een aantal voorwerpen laten zien die ze daar hebben gevonden. We took the morning ferry to Stromness in the Orkney Islands, an island archipelago consisting of about 70 islands about an hour and a half ride north off the coast. My mother is really into genealogy and she has been able to trace our ancestors dating from Orkney during the 1700-1800’s. She had DNA testing done which shows Danish and Norwegian reference populations, making perfect sense when you look at a map or are familiar with Viking/Scottish history. The Orkney Islands have been inhabited for about 8500 years making it an archaeological treasure trove earning it the name “Egypt of the North,” however most of it’s sites are twice as old as the pyramids (without any of the irritating souvenir merchants and camel touts ruining your enjoyment). We had a fairly early start as we would be cramming a lot in today. Our first stop was, of course, Tesco so we could pick up some lunch and snacks for during the day. The lovely weather that we'd had yesterday seemed to be continuing, so our guide suggested that we buy some disposable BBQs and some food to cook on them. What a genius idea! It would make a nice change from having a bog standard sandwich or wrap. We bought some of those burger and bun sets that most supermarkets do. It totally reminded me of my childhood as I used to have them for my tea every so often. Then we were off to explore the Orkneys, yesterday's sneak preview had left me wanting more. Kirkwall, Orkney Islands…. North of Scotland! 59 Degrees North Can you imagine, today we are at the far northern end of Scotland in the Orkney Islands. We are at the same latitude as Oslo, Norway, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Juneau, Alaska. As we come into the port at Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands, our first thought is how much the countryside looks like the Falkland Islands, except there is more elevation here….lots of green rolling hills, windswept and treeless. The port is along Scapa Flow an inlet from the North Sea which was home to the Royal Navy’s fleet during both World War I and II.
