28th September Well those high winds the Captain mentioned yesterday didn’t disturb us during the night and this morning we saw the sun rise as we docked in Kirkwall, Orkney. An initial technical hitch which prevented the gangway from being lowered was a bit worrying but we need not to worry for long as it was soon sorted and we could then set off on another panoramic tour. We travelled inland to the spiritual hub of the island so-called Neolithic Orkney which comprises of four ancient monuments designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We passed the ancient Ring of Brodgar - Scotland’s largest stone circle with a diameter of 100 mtrs and much older then Stonehenge. We stopped to view the Standing Stones of Stenness dating back more than 5,000 years and one of the earliest ... read more

Puffins in Orkney http://www.heygo.com Lorna our heygo virtual guide was on one spot on the clifftop on the Island of Westray, it was quite windy but we did manage to spot just a few puffins resting on the cliff edge. Interesting facts we learnt Atlantic Puffins from the auk family, they are black with a white belly and face, have a wingspan of 47cm to 63cm, a short tail, large strong orange feet (for landing and digging) and stand with an upright posture at 20cm tall. Puffins are distinctive because of their big colourful beaks. These are very large to enable puffins to catch many small fish (up to 10) at a time. With birds, usually the male is more eye-catching than the female, however both male and female puffins are almost identical in appearance (though ... read more

We took the ferry from Scrabster to Stromness in the Orkney Islands, an island archipelago consisting of about 70 islands about an hour and a half ferry ride north off the coast. Mom was really into genealogy and she had been able to trace our ancestors from Orkney during the 1700-1800’s. She also had DNA testing done which shows Danish and Norwegian reference populations, making perfect sense when you look at a map or are familiar with Viking/Scottish history. The Orkney Islands have been continuously inhabited for about 8500 years making it an archaeological treasure trove earning it the name “Egypt of the North,” however most of it’s sites are twice as old as the pyramids. Orkney has over 160 archaeological sites ranging from standing stones to burial cairns to settlements. The islands are covered in ... read more

Orkney. Italian Chapel, St Margaret’s. 47miles. 650m ascent. Breakfast at Pomona again at 8am. Great food and good service. Off into the mist until 11.30 following the coast, although unfortunately we could hardly tell. We had lunch at the Fossil Heritage Centre, Museum and cafe at Burray which I can recommend. As the skies brightened the Italian Chapel came into view across the causeway where luckily there were not many people viewing it. The chapel was built in a Nissan hut from 1941 until 1945 by 500 Italian POW’s captured in N Africa. They lined the inside and covered it with tiles and decorated it to a very high standard with several classic murals. Some of these were then sent to Skipton in Yorkshire before eventual repatriation in Italy. Further south Past the Fossil Heritage Centre ... read more

Orkney. Rousey and Kirkwall. 52 miles (including 8 on ferry). 850m ascent. At the Broch of Gurness I was speaking to the warden and commenting on what a good day it was turning out to be. He said, ’Yes it is, we had one like this 2 years ago.’ Very dry humour, but it was the best weather so far and the first time I have exposed my bare legs - now that’s a pretty sight. Gurness is only 2,500 years old as opposed to Scara Brae at double that. It was built in the Iron Age and has a central tower and very small houses surrounding it and encircled by a moat or cutting. It appears to have been quite a civilised place. Earlier a quick visit was made to the Click Mill on the ... read more

Die Italiener bekamen zwei Wellblechbaracken (Nissen... read more

... read more
