Today would have been Irene's birthday. In Richmond Park in south west London, at midday, Nellie and Monk joined together with 30 or so others to celebrate their love for Irene by planting a tree in her memory. Irene was the freest of free spirits and Monk felt that the final resting place for her ashes should reflect this and he chose the hawthorn as the tree that best symbolised Irene's beauty and character. Like Irene, the hawthorn is beautiful, but strong, and generous and giving. It's one of the first trees to blossom in the spring with a mass of delicate white flowers that herald the end of winter. In the autumn, it produces lovely red berries that sustain birdlife during the cold months. Its botanical name, crataegus monogyna, derives from the Greek word meaning ... read more

THIS TIME A YEAR AGO… THE FACTS, FIGURES & VERDICT A Post Trip Review It was a year ago today, 16th July that we departed on our mega-trip. I meant to write this finale much earlier than this…! But figured a year later was a good as any deadline to work to! …So how was it all, how was your mega holiday? Was it amazing…was it everything you wanted…?! Just how can you answer the questions well enough to meet people’s excited expecations? In simple boring form, Yes! Of course, we had an amazing trip. We went to fabulous places, but nowhere risky or edgy and many of which we had been to before. We saw many good friends we hadn’t seen for many years, experiencing a brief glimpse into their lives, taking home recipes and ... read more

So, here I am, researching backpacks (how many litres, does it come in pink?) exactly one week after finding out my lovely employers have inadvertantly created another credit crunch traveller. I am very much at the start of my planning and trying to establish how far my money will take me; and how far my bravery will take me, for that matter. My initial thinking is this following itinary which, with each Google search, I am learning is pretty standard: Thailand, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, Hawaii, Los Angeles and New York. I plan to keep this blog to track every stage as my memory is atrocious, so, I apologise if it is frightfully dull; I just want to remember every stage of what is undoubtedly the biggest adventure of my life...so far, that is.... read more

I've started this blog so that all of my friends and family back home can keep track of me while I'm in the UK. I don't have much to report so far since I've been here less than a week although you might be interested to here that all of London has been brought to a halt today because we received about 5-6 inches of snow last night which apparently almost never happens here. So today, the first day of school, classes are canceled. The buses, trains, and tube are shut and pretty much everyone has stayed home to play in the snow. It feels just like home to me! I've put up a couple of pictures from my trip into London a few days ago, unfortunately my camera ran out of battery after just two ... read more

Wow, two countries in two weeks... should probably get used to that huh? Well after using my spare time during the previous week to scheme and plan a reasonably priced, excitement filled trip within a trip, I found it was going to be harder than I thought to squeeze every ounce of quality out of my dollar...pound...euro.....thing...Everytime I found a good price on hotels or hostels they turned out to be quite a distance from the downtown and interesting areas of Barcelona. So my bravery set in and having already booked me plane ticket(whoa did a newcastle accent just come out of me? "booked ME plane ticket?" uh oh) anyways! So early morning, we set off towards London Gatwick airport. The details I forgot to mention is that me and Matt were extremely hungover from the ... read more

So with my flight out of the way and nothing but good times ahead, I was taken to Andover for a short time of about 4 or 5 days I can't be sure exactly which. Everyone who resided in Andover seemed to have the same advice for me regarding the city...and that was to apologize for how crap it was. To be honest I found interest in every corner, course most of those who offered the advice had spent a large majority of their existence in the town (population approximately 1 million people...same population as the CITY of Calgary!) but I found tons of cool stuff. For Example, the church (pictures will soon follow, or see facebook albums) seemed to older than Canada! nice lush green fields surrounding the area, old fashioned streets and shops. As that famous purple dinosaur Barney once sang "we're going on an adventure, fun for you and me, we're going on an adventure, just you wait and see", it certainly really feels like we are embarking on an adventure now we have finally made it out of the house. The last 2 weeks have had many unbelievable obstacles put in our way, so much so we really thought we would be delayed. First, Gav's nose job, then the day before we were due to fly Joe looked like he had chicken pox - spots all over his face and rash on the body, and it wasnt until the day of departure that it was confirmed it wasn't and he was clear to go - phew! They do say don't work with children, and the same view ... read more

Hi - thanks for dropping by to read this. This will probably be more of a journal on how life is living with manic depression AKA bipolar, with a journey inside my head with a few photos of things I see along the way, rather than a deep insight into a country that has a very troubled history. I'm only going away for 3.5 weeks, but I'm hoping it will be an adventure of a lifetime! Having bipolar makes the planning a tad tricky - anticipating what medication might be needed should I go high (this has happened on previous trips to Mexico, Jamaica, Ghana, San Francisco, Ibiza...but as Rush pointed out - maybe I was going high when I booked these flights!); the cost of insurance to cover bipolar is almost much as a flight ... read more
